02.02.12 | I'm from the UK so don't have any first-hand experience, but I struggle to see why so many Americans have a problem with Obama. From the outside at least he seems to be doing a decent job. Anyone care to enlighten me? |
ILJ
02.02.12 | He didn't save the country and make us all millionaires, so he's automatically a bad president.
No but really, he just didn't accomplish all that much. He's not bad, but he wasn't good either. And he most certainly isn't terrible like conservatives like to claim he is. He inherited a terrible mess and tried to fix it while working against a republican controlled congress which is never easy for a democrat. But on the other hand, he should have done more when the house was democrat controlled, so it's a double edged sword. |

Partisan politics and this delusion that Americans MUST either be Democrat or Republican is slowly tearing the country apart. Plus the fact that nearly all American's fail to understand that Congress are the ones fucking everything up, so instead they blame it all on the President.
If Obama is re-elected, we will see all this happening again for another 4 years. Come the next President, the hate-mongering and asinine partisan vitriol will be hurled at him/her. |

02.02.12 | people are disappointed because obama was supposed to be a big change for the country. at the end of bush's second term people were just so unhappy they wanted a new president that was radically different. enter obama, who is liberal, ethnic, and most importantly, articulate. the problem is that the president is not in charge of the country, and obama has done no better than other presidents in the past at getting both parties to work together in congress and make changes. the system of making law in the usa is clunky as fuck, it takes forever, and then the public is frustrated because nothing has really changed since obama's election. i mean, he has pulled troops out of places in the middle east and publicized healthcare, but the economy is still in the shitter (not his fault) and unemployment is still high. if the economy picks up significantly in the next few months he has a shot at re-election, but otherwise the voters will swing back to the other extreme. americans (and people in general) are really reactionary, voting is no different.
tl;dr? basically people expected too much of him. he's just the president, the president is powerless if they can't mobilize congress to make changes. |

02.02.12 | Crysis and sniper just summed everything up perfectly. Damn it feels good to see some people make complete sense. |

ILJ
02.02.12 | @ Crysis
Exactly. And the only thing Congressmen care about these days is all the money that lobbyists put in their pocket and how to get reelected. |
sniper
02.02.12 | yeah i don't even wanna start on what's wrong with how easily you can buy a vote in congress these days. fuck 'em, don't re-elect your representatives if they don't do what you want! do some fucking research, find out if they're making the decisions YOUR PEOPLE elected them to make. if not, fucking boot them, the government for for us. |
Crysis

What we need is an independent president, or a president that isn't democrat or republican. Someone who might actually be able to WORK and COMPROMISE with both sides. But alas, that is merely a pipe dream... |
Crysis
02.02.12 | Good example: The last gubernatorial election here in Maine was decided by 10,000 votes, or less than
2%. The candidate who won is named Paul LePage, a tea party republican who has proven himself to be
nothing short of an asshat. The candidate who lost (in 2nd place), named Eliot Cutler, was running
as an independent who clearly had the people in mind (I voted for him). There was, however, a
Democratic candidate named Libby Mitchell who got 19% of the vote (108,000 votes). If people had
stopped sticking to partisan lines, it would have been easy for Cutler to get the 10,000 votes he
would have needed to win, and an actual independent who had no party affiliation would have come in
and pleased both conservatives and liberals alike. But that's not what happened. |
