Trebor.
02.02.12 | cuz deathcore sucks
Listen to real death metal or some real prog |
devious
02.02.12 | solid riffs > shitty wankery.
Just because you can play your instrument extremely technically proficient doesn't make you an amazing musician. I know plenty of solid guitarists and drummers that can't write music. |
Trebor.
02.02.12 | You can listen to it, just please don't make lists about it |
BMFD4567
02.02.12 | Well Devious, the same can be said for any kind of technical death metal. Take The Faceless. Is the same applied there?
|
Spec
02.02.12 | 1 and 2 are pretty great i dunno. |
Zorak
02.02.12 | I like "djent". It's getting a lot of shit because everyone and their sister seem to be using it as a crutch lately. But the bands listed here do it well. |
cb123
02.02.12 | yeah i dig the djent from time to time, couldn't listen to loads of it though |
BMFD4567
02.02.12 | ^Basically my taste in it. Just love these albums in particular, though. |
wacknizzle
02.02.12 | 1, 2, 3, 4, are actually cool even though i hate djent too. everything gets shitty once you find a word for it. metalcore was cool before bands started calling themselves it, eventually the bands considered metalcore were a 1000 fucking miles away from what metalcore really was. especially melodic death metal(swedish) with breakdowns is not metalcore just like as i lay dying and killswitch engage are not metalcore. |
DieDead
02.02.12 | i like djent |
Yazz_Flute
02.02.12 | 'Djent' bands are sterile and boring for the most part. |

02.02.12 | Also the link didn't work for me. |

02.02.12 | There are so many out there now. |

02.02.12 | Here are some I actually like.
The Contortionist
After the Burial
Born of Osiris
Animals as Leaders
Cloudkicker
Last Chance to Reason
Substructure
Veil of Maya
I realize not all of these are "djent" bands, but they all use djent in some sections.

02.02.12 | ever forthright is kind of neat for 6 days |
Zorak
02.02.12 | My friend has shown me sections of it. I really like the vocals (aside from the rapping and R&B sections) and jazz parts. The lead work is interesting as well. |
Yazz_Flute
02.02.12 | I don't like Animals As Leaders. |
Zorak
02.02.12 | I didn't like Weightless at all. The s/t ruled |
Scoot
02.02.12 | there's like two that are actually decent
that's the biggest problem |
wacknizzle
02.02.12 | it's still a disease and too many people are trying to do it, leave it to the real songwriting musicians who don't make a big thing of it. i don't think last chance to reason is very djent at all, good thing. Good bands make their own thing of it and most of those bands are hardly djent in the real sense of the word. It's only a genre for generic unoriginal guitar players who figure out how to play it and think they mean shit and then shitty electrocore bands just steal breakdowns from it. |
Yazz_Flute
02.02.12 | The self-titled had lots of good individual moments, yeah. But it's not really an album I could sit down and listen to all the way through.
Weightless was just boring. I get the feeling that must 'djent' musicians don't really understand music. That doesn't make them less technically impressive, but it explains the poor song-writing. Watch any interview with Misha Mansoor, he seems completely clueless. |
BugZoid
02.02.12 | The tone is wonderful, it's just one of those things that everyone jumped on all at once and it became overdone in like a matter of a year or two. It's not to say all the bands that utilize the tone or style are bad, but it has just become cliche in such a short amount of time. |

02.02.12 | don't confuse "asshole" with "idiot" |

02.02.12 | "Well Devious, the same can be said for any kind of technical death metal"
you've obviously never listened to good tech death that isn't full of shit wankery |

02.02.12 | "It's getting a lot of shit because everyone and their sister seem to be using it as a crutch lately."
i think that about sums it up |
BMFD4567
02.02.12 | Lol at everyone hatin on weightless. Seriously loved that album probably twice as much as the S/T.
"Tech death that isn't full of shit wankery."
Point some bands out, please. (I've really only come across The Faceless) |
Zorak
02.02.12 | I just could not get into Weightless. I hated the 8bit parts. The s/t had so many "wow" moments as where I just didn't get that feeling with Weightless. Just my opinion though.
@wacknizzle I know LCTR isn't djent but they have some sections that use it. |
PurpleDino
02.02.12 | Just like all genres, there's more bad than there is good
I like a few djenty bands and if it makes me an arsehole (or indeed an idiot) then so be it |
MO
02.02.12 | "Point some bands out, please"
decapitated, gorguts, ion dissonance, ulcerate, kataplexis (to an extent), martyr, demilich, apocryphal death, iniquity, malignancy, there's a shitload of others |

02.02.12 | I think djent is considered shit because it is shit. |

02.02.12 | Very insightful Hawks |

That's how I roll. |
Zorak
02.02.12 | the word djent is pretty stupid. |
MalleusMaleficarum
02.02.12 | almost as mindless as the music |
CakeWithCream
02.02.12 | the genre should be called Progressive Groove Metal instead of djent
and since djent is the latest trend a bunch of fags are oversaturating the genre with generic shit |
macadoolahicky
02.02.12 | It's the same thing that happens to any genre that gets big for a little bit. Melodeath was really big for a while, and not necessarily everyone thinks it's shit but certainly it's not as big as it used to be. Deathcore isn't as big as it used to be, but people really hated that all the time pretty much. You just gotta find the right bands, no matter what genre you're in. |
CakeWithCream
02.02.12 | ^yeah, even thrash and death metal (as much as i hate to say it) has some really shitty bands, although obviously not as much as the trendy genres, hopefully thrash never becomes the new "thing" otherwise next thing you'll know 50 Slayer copycats will pop up overnight |
MalleusMaleficarum
02.02.12 | you already missed that boat, noob |
PurpleDino
02.02.12 | That's exactly what happened 25 years ago, but no one cared because there was no internet |
climactic
02.02.12 | "You just gotta find the right bands, no matter what genre you're in."
yeah, too bad people here loving bashing entire genres of music when they have only heard a couple bands |
BMFD4567
02.02.12 | ^ that's pretty much what I've seen to observe.
Another one of my fears is that people bandwagon pretty hard on hating djent. You know what, while we're on the subject, let's rename it officially and spread it everywhere. Because that's how it works. Suggest names.
Inb4 "we should call it shit."

Zorak
02.03.12 | Idk what to classify it as. lol |
BMFD4567
02.03.12 | Progressive groove........core? |
NeutralThunder12
02.03.12 | being technically proficient and being able to play sweeps and shit does make you a good musician. Good musician and good songwriter are different. I don't listen to technical metal for coherent and solid "songwriting" i listen for riffs and diversity and the way its all composed. some people enjoy it, some dont. Theres definitely some bad djent shit out there but theres some good stuff as well. |
Zorak
02.03.12 | good point neutral |
fsharptrit0ne
02.03.12 | yea makes you a good musician but you're still a soulless fool |
Relinquished
02.03.12 | djent is just poorly executed and hasn't reached potential, AAL is amazing but only because there are no destestable vocals and the music is well-written |
auberginedreams
02.03.12 | "Just because you can play your instrument extremely technically proficient doesn't make you an amazing musician. I know plenty of solid guitarists and drummers that can't write music."
this basically. i'll be the first to admit that a ton of djent band are very talented technically, but music isn't a sport, it's art. it's not about some physical feat or braggery. nothing wrong with technicality if it adds to the music, but these djent bands have no song writing skills, it's just a bunch of cold, calculated and emotionless riffs strung together in some inaudible tuning. |
UnnamedOcean
02.03.12 | It's hardly a genre, and what is there was overdone way too quickly. |
whywontyoudie
02.03.12 | clim nailed it. |
Zorak
02.03.12 | not all of the "djent" bands have poor song writing skills |
Yazz_Flute
02.03.12 | I wouldn't really call them djent (though they seem to get lumped into the same scene), but Corelia are fantastic. |
CakeWithCream
02.03.12 | its Progressive Groove Metal. All the good 'djent' bands play a sound that focuses on a balance between melody and groove. Bad djent bands play djent. Just like most people listen to brostep when they listen to dubstep and have never heard of shit like Burial, Submotion etc. |
MO
02.03.12 | "djent is just poorly executed and hasn't reached potential, AAL is amazing but only because there are no destestable vocals and the music is well-written"
pretty much, it's like bands have just been sticking to one formula with djent and haven't been able to utilize it properly. and yea much of the singing in djent sucks |
Zorak
02.03.12 | As a whole, djent kinda sucks. There are bands who don't but the majority of them do. |
Eulogize
02.03.12 | Djent is pretty cool. And for some reason at first glance I thought 3 was the album artwork for The Somatic Defilement. |
AtomicWaste
02.03.12 | There's a decent amount of good djent, but you sort of have to dig for it. And you've got to dig hard. You've also got to know what you like. I go for the stuff with the progressive edge because I find more innovation with those bands as opposed to the deathcore centered stuff, which is usually crap.
Anything that winds up with awful vocals and low string wailing is just poor, but there are some that do it right.
As for musicianship... I think a lot of them fancy themselves Steve Vais, and the issue is they're just not. |
Eulogize
02.03.12 | djent junz is like the best thing ever |
MO
02.03.12 | some of the better djent out there are the bands who are just starting, not established bands minus a couple |
AtomicWaste
02.03.12 | "some of the better djent out there are the bands who are just starting, not established bands minus a

This by a long shot. Bands with new ideas are born every day, it seems, and some of them use the djent
sound to good effect, unlike shitty bands like Periphery. |
ChuckyTruant
02.04.12 | yeah link isn't working for me either |
