01.16.12 | danny carey is unbelievable as a drummer, this coming from a guy who hates tool as much as he hates brokencyde and icp |
Attis
01.16.12 | nice joke list anyway george KOLLIAS |
tarkus
01.16.12 | gavin harrison is a good drummer but his music is just over mediocre for the most part
needs gene hoglan |

01.16.12 | haake > carey but carey does rule |

01.16.12 | haake > anyone on this list |

01.16.12 | Have not listened to anything with Gene Hoglan I'm afraid. I'll remedy that |

01.16.12 | are you new to music????? |

01.16.12 | nope |

01.16.12 | No Blake Richardson? Are you high? |
Firestarter
01.16.12 | @Attis
Well I'm pretty new to the heavier side of music. Opeth has helped me learn to love the Death Metal growl and so I have lots of awesome heavy bands I need to listen to now :D |
KjSwantko
01.16.12 | 1 and 4 for the win |
iambandersnatch
01.16.12 | i'm not the biggest mastodon fan ever but i think i like brann's drumming a lot more than the rest of these |
taylormemer
01.16.12 | "Haake is alright if you're a metalhead and have no girlfriend"
Sorry but that just doesn't apply to everyone. |
UnnamedOcean
01.16.12 | I think you would really like Mark Heron of the band Oceansize. Your taste seems pretty compatible. |

01.16.12 | Gavin Harrison truly shines in FoaBP. |
Firestarter
01.16.12 | I will have to check out Deathspell Omega. Are they fond of blast beats? Because I'm not lol.
Well he truly shines in Anesthetize but the rest of the album is pretty slow and uninteresting with the exception of the title track IMO |
ZilbelPing
01.16.12 | Circa Survive-Juturna (Steve Clifford is amazing.)
The Number Twelve Looks Like You-Mongrel (Jon Karel combines metal with jazz, funk, and Latin grooves. You'll love it since you like Jon Theodore.
The Dismemberment Plan-Change |

01.16.12 | Great list |
Alexcore
01.16.12 | indeed |

01.16.12 | Check out Mutemath's eponymous debut. The drumming is pretty fantastic. They have a good discog too. There's a lot of good drumming in most of the modern metal bands (Mutemath isn't metal by the way), but if you don't like blast beats, then rec'ing them to you would be a waste of time. |
Firestarter
01.16.12 | Thanks for the recs, I' ll check them out.
I do really like heavy music but yeah, blast beats don't do anything for me. It's just kind of like "Look how fast I can hit the drums! :D". I prefer something with a good flow or groove |
Firestarter
01.17.12 | So what good heavy music can people recommend that doesn't rely on blast beats?? |

01.17.12 | Elliot Sellers on Job For A Cowboy's Doom EP:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVzyT-gWQjc |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | Bro, Elliott is incredible, he went on to drum for The Faceless for a little after JFAC, he's pretty chill. |
liledman
01.17.12 | dude from DsO isnt THAT great, hes just great for bm standards (as is the band itself).
check out chris pennie, jamie saint merat, dude from gospel, hamid drake, susie ibarra, chris dave, steve jordan, paul lytton, steve macdonald, paul lovens, david witte, lille gruber, alex hernandez etc... |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | Chris Pennie ruined Coheed. Jamie Saint Merat - never heard of him. Dude from Gospel was too pretentious for CTTS, so he's a dick. All of those other dudes are no names, nobody cares. |
liledman
01.17.12 | obviously from that reaction drummers should be gauged on how well you know them. name dropping JFAC and the faceless only adds to your cause. |
StrizzMatik
01.17.12 | List needs more Durijah Lang from Glassjaw tbh |
Deviant.
01.17.12 | "taylor I used to love you so freaking much but you didn't care about me that explains why you like Haake so much you dude"
It's okay, I still love you |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | "obviously from that reaction drummers should be gauged on how well you know them. name dropping JFAC and the faceless only adds to your cause."
Translation: those bands are too mainstream to have good drummers, hurr durr I have superior taste to people who like music I don't like. |
liledman
01.17.12 | i named the drummers who played with adele and john mayer, what the fuck are you on about |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | Oh so because they get payed more, they're better drummers? |
Ire
01.17.12 | I find Gavin Harrison pretty boring. He's like a boring Bill Bruford who didn't do enough drugs. |
liledman
01.17.12 | yeah that doesnt really work when i mention drummers from immolation, ulcerate, gospel, and various free jazz drummers who operate on a pretty basic income from music, and it usually isnt their primary income.
any other pathetic retorts? |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | You're such a boner kill dude, Elliott Sellers kicks all their asses. |
liledman
01.17.12 | when you listen to each of them and elaborate on the reasons why, then i will value your opinion. |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | How about you explain why Elliott Sellers isn't the fucking man.
Look at this shit:

01.17.12 | Thought #1 said Dana Carvey, was like ... Waynes World? |
Firestarter
01.17.12 | Yeah alot of prog, but then thats what I'm into. Progressive music usually has very interesting drumming. I am starting to get bored with prog now though and pushing into extreme metal, however I don't think I'll ever be able to stand metal-core |
liledman
01.17.12 | a very apt headbanger with nothing particularly interesting about his drumming. straight-ahead deathcore/metal drumming with very little to differentiate him from the hordes of others, except maybe that he was payed more than the guys doing youtube videos of similar stuff. |
cb123
01.17.12 | Have a go at Atomship - the crash of '47
And props in COG lucius is the man |
PaperTigers
01.17.12 | Check out Burst - Lazarus Bird. Seems like something you might like, and Patrik Hultin is great. More of a groove oriented metal drummer with plenty of complexity for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4whoZSUzEQ |
Timmons
01.17.12 | fairly average song as the band goes, but the drumming in Mein by deftones is just unbelievable |
Timmons
01.17.12 | ben koller is brilliant as well. he has technicality AND creativity which is fairly rare |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | Yeah, Ben Koller is amazing. |
Firestarter
01.17.12 | I will check out those recs, thanks.
I'm a big fan of the Deftones. Abe Cunningham nearly made this list. I love his style, even if it is simplistic at times. |

01.17.12 | "a very apt headbanger with nothing particularly interesting about his drumming. straight-ahead deathcore/metal drumming with very little to differentiate him from the hordes of others, except maybe that he was payed more than the guys doing youtube videos of similar stuff."

01.17.12 | Ben Koller [3]
Blake Richardson [2] |
FrankRedHot
01.17.12 | Lol triggers |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | Okay serious suggestions:
Ben Koller
Blake Richardson
Martin Lopez
Matt Kuykendall
Aaron Gilespie
and even though he's not actually that good, Dayton Cantley (Through The Eyes Of The Dead's original
drummer), just because I love the snare shit he does. |
defjaw83
01.17.12 | Gene Hoglan NEEDS to be on here dude. Listen to some Strapping Young Lad and tell me he doesn't rule all |
pedro70512
01.17.12 | Dailor, Reinert, and Haake are among my favorites. Hoglan ought to be here obviously, as well as Martin Lopez of Opeth. |
pedro70512
01.17.12 | Oh and Danny Walker of Intronaut. I would make a case for for Jamie Saint Merat of Ulcerate, too. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.17.12 | Martin lopez is a total beast, as is Van Williams of Nevermore |
deathofasalesman
01.17.12 | Btw Dave Grohl on SFTD is a good choice. |
Firestarter
01.17.12 | Yeah Martin Lopez is a fantastic drummer and Opeth is one of my favorite bands, but his drumming don't stand out as much as some of these when I listen to them as im too busy listening to the other amazing guitar and vocals. If the list was a bit bigger he'd definitely be on it. I'll check out Gene Hoglan for sure but Im afraid I am not into Death-core and Post-Hardcore so Ben Koller, Blake Richardson are probably not my cup of tea. |
FromDaHood
01.17.12 | Matt Mingus, yo.
And Joey Jordison of course. |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | Matt Mingus is fucking awesome. I swear that dude was tripping when I saw him wandering around at Warped Tour this summer. |
keyboardxmosh
01.17.12 | @Firestarter: Lopez' style isn't about standing out, it's about the groove. |
Firestarter
01.17.12 | Very true, I apologize for his exclusion from this list :) |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.17.12 | NEEDS MOAR JOEY JORDISON |
acorncheese
01.17.12 | Any Oceansize album would fit into this list nicely. |
Firestarter
01.17.12 | If I made it top 15:
Effloresce - Oceansize: Mark Heron/
/Ghost Reveries - Opeth: Martin Lopez/
/Deftones - Diamond Eyes: Abe Cunningham/
/Karnivool - Sound Awake: Steve Judd/
/Therapy? - Crooked Timber: Neil Cooper/
and im sure Gene Hoglan is fantastic but I own nothing with him in, so cannot really put him in this list. I will make it my
mission to discover his awesomeness for myself though :P |
UnnamedOcean
01.18.12 | Good that you put Mark Heron up ;) You need to listen to Frames. His drumming on that album is
immense.
I'm also a drummer as well. |
AngelofDeath
01.18.12 | "Opeth: Matt Lopez"
lol |
Firestarter
01.18.12 | Too many Matt's Mark's Martins Mikes getting me confused :s |
ZombicidalMan
01.18.12 | Steve Shalaty from Immolation... his rhythms seriously carry the band, his technique is awesome. In fact, any Immolation drummer, but Steve is the most recent, and IMO, sounds better than their other drummers. Check out Majesty And Decay.
Then again, what can you say, most death metal drummers are impressive, albeit boring. |
eonbluekarma
01.18.12 | To quote "High Fidelity","when is it bullshit to state a preference?" |
