Obscure Japanese Bands Part 2
Some more cool bands from the more underground rock scene in Japan. |
| 1 | 101A
http://youtu.be/SCTYYHKgGfk - Great japanese shoegaze-influenced rock with female vocals. Also strays into dreampop and post-rock territories occasionally. Their album "4" which came out last year was one of my personal favs of theyear |
| 2 | Fugenn & The White Elephants
http://youtu.be/CVAa2d_0FyA - Sweet IDM from japan, slightly glitchy. Most of the discog can be DLed for free at the label's website. |
| 3 | Shinsei Kamattechan
http://youtu.be/NXT9rz8BErk - Quirky noise pop from japan. The vocalist often uses vocal effects to make himself sound like a girl or something. I think they've actually gotten pretty damn big in the japanese indie scene. They're known for their rather low-budget music videos. |
| 4 | 88kasyo junrei
http://youtu.be/c7apuNjIRe0 - AMAZING. That's the only way to describe this band. Combine a fuckton of old school rock influences all into one awe-inspiring combination with a personal charm added to it. Their 2011 album SYG88 is another album high on my AOTY list. |
| 5 | Usotsuki Barbie
http://youtu.be/32DS3o2T4VE - Crazy garage rock made by crazy dudes. They don't take themselves too seriously, but they don't approach 'joke band'-territory either. Also quite well known for their 'wat'-inducing music videos. |
| 6 | hitohi
http://youtu.be/cm1IRm5AhjI - Progressive rock with raw, folky vocals. Also released a great minialbum last year. |
| 7 | momigai
http://youtu.be/GDtIuPCO0ds - This one is for fans of stuff like Flying Lotus or Tokimonsta. Collab between DJ MOTIVE and the indie pop band ???. |
| 8 | WATCHMAN
http://youtu.be/yFw4e9Td7cs - Wonky, trippy japanese idm. Reminds me of PS1 game soundtracks at times. Guy is connected to COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS in some way iirc. |
| 9 | Lillies and remains
http://youtu.be/c3IwChRzAoY - The best engrish-singing japanese Interpol tribute band. Their debut EP Moralist S.S. is one of my fav. EPs ever, after that they kind of went downhill in terms of quality. |
| 10 | munimuni
http://youtu.be/7UjmI_oBaUo - Now that we're in the post-punk zone anyways, check out this band as well. They're more on the '80s gothic side of post-punk ( Think Bauhaus and Pornography-era The Cure ) Vocals take some time to get into, but the atmosphere this band creates is great. |
| 11 | OGRE YOU ASSHOLE
http://youtu.be/6gOCz8xe9PU - Japanese version of Modest Mouse. Nothing more to say about 'em. |
| 12 | urbangarde
http://youtu.be/3ap-mKCDvuc - Label themselves as 'Tokyo Virginity Pop' and 'Trauma Techno Pop'. Insane alternative pop music with chiptune-influence. |
| 13 | Sex-Android
http://youtu.be/UO9gZ55GK-o - Japanese psychobilly-esque music. I don't exactly know which genre they are, but they have a somewhat retro guitar sound. |
| 14 | Kinoco Hotel
http://youtu.be/8vY81HAvmOM - These chicks are basically an homage to the entire '60s and early '70s rock scene. Heavy use of organs and even the recording quality gives their output an old-school feeling. Fans of The Doors and such might enjoy it. |
| 15 | Shohei Muto with Koji Ueno
http://youtu.be/1_t4rHSCr6o - Mariachi-punk? I don't know. Anyways, 2 members from two separate jazz-influenced bands come together and produce awesome mariachi-style music. Great summer music. |
| 16 | the novembers
http://youtu.be/FzZz9f7Wve8 Another alt. rock band with shoegaze influences. They lean more towards the rock side of things than 101A do, though. |
| 17 | THE UNIQUE STAR
http://youtu.be/TBY_B4x4Vbs - Rin/Ling Toshite fans, eat your heart out. They have similar dynamics, although their sound is significantly poppier. High pitched male vocals + female vocals and an adequate amount of rocking. |
| 18 | HEAVENSTAMP
http://youtu.be/7s421z0nlIs - Female-fronted poppy, modern post-punk. They are sortof influenced by Bloc Party. Pretty much all of their releases also feature remixes by Bloc Party members, so I'd guess they're friends. |
| 19 | Confuse
http://youtu.be/mumJjWmwibc - Fast hardcore punk band from the 80s that don't take any shit. |
| 20 | Oto-Oni
http://youtu.be/LGP3Ba6td3I - Rock with a very tribal and traditional Japanese undertone to it. They're one of the few Visual Kei-influenced bands with an actual unique personality |
