Masochist 01.07.12	Saw the Muppets. Best movie of the year so far. And yeah, paid for that shit...thrice ;-). First showing was a matinee, second time was in the evening, but on Tuesday (all day matinee prices). Fuck $41 dollars, NO damn movie in the past few good years short of the last Harry Potter movie would be worth $41 dollars, unless it was at an IMAX. Also, about 'Up'...I enjoy movies that are out-of-the-ordinary, risky affairs. In animation, the lead is usually a kid, or an adult that looks/acts like a kid, and there's a romance in it, and the story builds rather naturally. In 'Up', there's an old-ass man who acts like an old-ass man, there's that heart-rending montage in the BEGINNING of the movie (a full two minutes without dialogue!), and there's a plot so fantastical that even I can't really fully suspend my disbelief. Still, the story is told masterfully, there's depth (that kid isn't just a hyperactive kid for the hell of being a hyperactive kid, he's eager to help Carl for a specific reason, and the motive behind that reason is one of the more poignant themes of the film). It's also the straight funniest Pixar movie there is. I don't know, man. I realize it's not everyone cup of tea. I realize that people might not like it. But when I watch that film, I feel that there was a countless amount of effort and "self" put into it, so when you describe it as cold and soulless, I simply can't/don't/refuse to see it.

Up might have been better for me if people didn't go on and on about it - and most people seemed to only really have anything to say about the first five minutes anyway and how sad it was. And those five minutes were not sad at all when I finally got around to watching it - if anything, they seemed to live a mostly very happy, long life together in some nice neighborhood. There was simply nothing in that segment that resonated with me in any touching manner.
