12.16.11 | i think spotify by just a bit, but I guess it's close... in the short term maybe piracy but over a longer term spotify prob |
BigHans
12.16.11 | piracy, because Spotify pays the artists I think |
jefflebowski
12.16.11 | i don't see how Spotify can be worse considering that at least the artist gets some money, however small an amount |
theacademy
12.16.11 | its a fraction of the fraction of a cent that say, an itunes or amazon download would pay... |

omnipanzer
12.16.11 | long term, Spotify because they still really make nothing and it makes it seem legit. |
theacademy
12.16.11 | spotify could be worse because instantaneous access to the entire spotify library takes all the value/weight out of the choice to listen to any one song over another |
theacademy
12.16.11 | and yeah what i was getting at was what omni said |

12.16.11 | and the opposite of what trebor said |

12.16.11 | wtf is spotify
^ Pandora with a bigger library and you can actually choose the songs. Like opening up the itunes store and having full songs, not 30 second samples. Oh and it scrobbles to last.fm |

12.16.11 | It probably makes you listen to commercials fuck that I listen to music like an adult commercial free. |
BigHans
12.16.11 | commercials are a small price to pay for free access to almost every album ever. |

12.16.11 | spotify sucks fucking asshole
piracy is good for artists |
theacademy
12.16.11 | being able to choose the songs without going through any selection/purchase/downloading risk/gravity at all is what kills it. You'll never listen to anything that you didn't read a good review about beforehand, and you'll never listen to anything that needs to grow on you because you can always switch to something else after two seconds... |
theacademy
12.16.11 | rosenstock wrote about this a few weeks ago i think but i didnt bookmark it |

12.16.11 | at least in a world without spotify:
1) dumber people who rip piracy because its illegal will still pay more for music from like itunes/amazon/CDs... spotify being legal cuts into what little is left of the business that piracy all but destroyed.
2) even if you don't love an album right away, it's still in your itunes, it might pop up on shuffle, etc... you still made a conscious choice to grab it off a blog, share it, think about it, make a list about it, etc. ... have some kind of reaction... Even on sputnik, where the norm is piracy, only the really phony/fake/faggoty users delete stuff from itunes after downloading them. |

12.16.11 | HANS: i'm not saying spotify is bad, or that you shouldn't use it... i'm just positing the question about comparing spotify use (legal) to the piracy 'environment' that has come to prevail the last couple of years...
If i said 'stop using spotify because its bad for artists' id be the biggest hypocrite ever.
As for comparing it to Pandora, i'd say that Pandora (and last.fm before they changed their subscription regime), much more than spotify, fulfills what trebor put out there about "helps artists get new listeners"... i think a large part of this comes from protecting listeners from their own musical-ADD ("with a bigger library and you can actually choose the songs.").
ApplicationToHeaven i think you're confused. |
