I honestly won't use my degree, and I know I won't. So, it's hard to be like this when my family has a history of PhD's and whatnot. |

12.05.11 | If you want to be a farmer then you go to college for agriculture or you go to university for engineering in whichever field of agricultural education you want to specialize in. For example, I used to work with the spanish guy who had a Ph.D in growing mango. |

12.05.11 | There are some great degrees if you want to be a farmer. Agricultural Business is an example. You have to do the research though: go out and talk to people in your field, see which schools have what degrees etc. |

12.05.11 | Education is a great idea if you want to become a farmer because you will learn techniques and strategies that will only aid you considerably in the future. Yea you may know how to farm one way and it may be an excellent way to farm but it couldn't hurt to learn and expand on what you know. Also, I am more than certain that there are grants and scholarships available for people who want to be farmers and are getting an education in agriculture considering there was that giant scare a few years ago when the media started saying that farming was at such a rapid decline that there may be no one left to grow food in North America, stupidness. |

Yeah dude, I was kinda thinking of getting an Ag Business degree. But, I don't wanna pay CSU 10K plus a year or whatever just for that. I wish my community college had that degree, it has almost everything else. :P haha. I might go for a business degree since I'm going to be starting my own endeavor anyway.
"I used to work with the spanish guy who had a Ph.D in growing mango."
That's just epic.

12.05.11 | Honestly, don't rush into it if you don't know what you want to do. That's my best advice. I went into college right after high school, dicked around for two years.. wasted about 8 grand, and only now, in my third year have i found out what i want to do. |

12.05.11 | What sam said, but if you want to go to school and get some gen eds out of the way do them at a community college and make sure the credits transfer to where you want to go when you're done. |

12.05.11 | As a recent grad I would suggest you just look at College as an end in itself rather than a means to a career or something. I went to UC and it changed the way that I see the world intellectually, and it changed a lot of my social perspectives. If you're willing to pay for CSU you might as well go to CC for two years and transfer to UC. |
toxin.
12.05.11 | "Oh no I didn't get into UCLA and I have to go to UC Riverside instead

I don't get the logic here. If you're trying to be a doctor or engineer, going to UCR is going to fuck up your chances of getting into graduate school. I agree that there's too large of an emphasis placed on what school you get into, but having that pedigree helps.
My friend is an awesome baker (seniors in high school) and she's stressed out about getting into UCLA when I keep telling her UCI is completely fine, because she just needs the business skills to learn to manage a business and also to get a few jobs to see how things are done & run.
But then, if you have aspirations to be a top executive of a major company, you need that pedigree for obvious reasons. I mean a Community College degree doesn't cut it. My dad got his bachelor's at some college in India, but he got his MBA at UGA (note that UGA isn't even a top tier school) and he said that MBA made a world of difference to get his jobs (which were pretty important [can't tell if he's exaggerating his importance or not]).
So yeah I don't really agree with that mindset in the least. |

Even then, doesn't school-name brand mean something? I coulda sworn my friend (who also wants to study film) said something about NYU being really important.
But yeah, for the record, if I had to go to UC Riverside I probably would kill myself because I'd never get my dream job of being an aerospace engineer/ astrophysicist |
Trebor.
12.05.11 | Dude, it's impossible to get into NYU Film

12.05.11 | Oh, yeah no point applying there. There'll always be some people who do crazy shit like slave over some internship in Paris in order to get in there.
Either way you'll be fine. It's like my friend trying to get into the UCSD combined med program that only accepts 12 people. I don't know what the point is when he can go somewhere else and eventually be a doctor anyways |
