i love that movie so much |
AsoTamaki
12.04.11 | Top quality stuff except for 3 and 15. Good list. |
lucazade22
12.04.11 | I can see how some people would not like 3. I love it but it is kinda wacky/different! |
AsoTamaki
12.04.11 | No way. Battle Royale is horrid. Brainless writing, piss-poor characterization and some dreadful performances. It should have been adapted into an animated movie instead. At least it definitely would have had better acting and probably would have seemed more realistic. |
AsoTamaki
12.04.11 | I actually liked 3. I just don't think it's as great as the other stuff on the list. It's like 7/10 level. |
TheNotrap
12.04.11 | Some of my post 90 fav:
The Matrix - 1st
District 9
Fight Club
As Good as It Gets
Lord of the Rings - trilogy
Casino Royale
Schindler's List
Pulp Fiction
Dances With Wolves
Braveheart
Seven
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Jurassic Park
Four Weddings and a Funeral
One of post 90 greatest script moments:
As Good as It Gets:
Zoe: How do you write women so well?
Melvin: I think of a man. And I take away reason and accountability.
Zoe: Carol the waitress, meet Simon the fag.

12.04.11 | From the Rivers of Babylon. Eh eh eh! |
lucazade22
12.04.11 | @TheNotrap Dances with Wolves, Schindler's List and Seven weren't too far from making the list.
Also, on reflection, I should've included American Beauty! |
lucazade22
12.04.11 | La Haine and Cicade de Deus, too. Dammit I should've made a top 20! |
Pentagon
12.04.11 | Eh, no love for Donnie Darko guys? The Lives of Others and In Bruge are amazing though. |

12.04.11 | I like Memories of Murder a whole lot but I actually prefer that director's three films: Mother, The Host, and Barking Dogs Never Bite.
off the top of my head my list would look like this:
Zodiac,
A Tale of Two Sisters,
Trust (1990),
Heavenly Creatures,
Audition,
Office Space,
some other movies i like |
lucazade22
12.04.11 | I really enjoy Audition and Zodiac, but prefer Ichi the Killer and Memories of Murder. Tale of Two Sisters is a really good film too, although pretty tough to follow the first time.
I really need to check out Mother...just bought the dvd off amazon :) |

12.04.11 | "donnie darko gets worse every time i watch it :/"
That's usually what happens, unless you're a naive college student who's looking for any reason to claim he's "deep." |
theacademy
12.04.11 | american beauty sucked
donnie darko isn't really a 'every time i watch it' flick, man... ive probably seen it only 3 times over the last decade
i should have commended the listmaker for including kiss kiss bang bang that movie was great |
Electric City
12.04.11 | you mean with that movie specifically? there are quite a few movies i like that get better with each viewing |
FrankRedHot
12.04.11 | Yeah, I mean with that movie specifically. Everyone I've known that loved it at age 18 can't understand why they loved it so much 10 years later. |
AsoTamaki
12.04.11 | "american beauty sucked"

Vesper
12.04.11 | "synecdoche, ny"
Only movie I've ever seen during which I've fallen asleep without having already been sleepy at the beginning.
Pretty polarizing movie, but I'm in the camp that it was a self-indulgent piece of crap. |
robertsona
12.04.11 | i remember liking synecdoche back when it first came out but then 8 1/2 |
Electric City
12.04.11 | no country for old men was good, but a little disappointing. i was also so so about synecdoche |
Vesper
12.04.11 | Even if Fellini's 8 1/2 didn't already do something similar, the whole thing from the title to all the depressing self-reflection just seemed terribly heavy-handed to me.
Of course, there is that chunk that I slept through, but I doubt it would have redeemed my opinion of it.
I don't think any adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's work has ever lived up to my expectations because, uh, the books. |
ohfoxxxycole
12.04.11 | i like american beauty a lot |
ohfoxxxycole
12.04.11 | idk guys i watched synecdoche, ny with no knowledge of 8 1/2 or mccarthy so maybe thats why i like it and you didnt |
robertsona
12.04.11 | i didnt either but i thought 8 1/2 had a pretty similar core but was much better
i think "the diving bell and the butterfly" is certainly one of the best movies of the past decade |
Vesper
12.04.11 | i didnt either but i thought 8 1/2 had a pretty similar core but was much better[2]
WHAT NOW.
But, like I said, polarizing. 8 1/2 was too, although it's widely accepted as a classic.
I'd also have to add Mulholland Drive and Fargo as two of my post-1990 favorites. |
lucazade22
12.04.11 | Mulholland Drive is confusing as hell but on multiple viewings is pretty cool. Also, it has one of the best lesbian scenes ever.
I found Fargo to be a bit boring. Just didn't like the lead female detective :O |

12.04.11 | Has anyone mentioned Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind yet? Seriously, that is pretty much the perfect film. |
ohfoxxxycole
12.04.11 | yeah a perfect 8 |
Crysis
12.04.11 | 5 is easily in my top 3 favorite films of all time. |
Vesper
12.04.11 | Yeah, was just going to bring up Eternal Sunshine as Charlie Kaufman in top form (better writer than director, I guess).
@lucazade -I didn't think Mulholland Drive was confusing at all, but I'm probably in the minority, haha.
What didn't you like about the detective? I thought Frances McDormand did an amazing performance. |
Trebor.
12.04.11 | It would be in my top 30 probably |

12.04.11 | No Country for Old Men is good... but it's not THAT good. But, you know, opinions and tastes, etc. :P |
Trebor.
12.04.11 | Objectively No Country For Old Men is nearly perfect |
lucazade22
12.04.11 | I find it interesting how when it comes to listing best films of all time there are very rarely any comedies mentioned. Why do you think this is? Is finding a stupid film funny a more guilty pleasure than enjoying a sad film?
Re Fargo. I just couldn't get into her character and so felt disconnected from the film. Also, at the end it seemed a bit unrealistic. Anyways, might have to give it another chance. |
AsoTamaki
12.04.11 | People just don't usually consider their favorite comedies to have superb cinematography, directing, acting or things of that nature. |
Trebor.
12.04.11 | Except for movies like The Big Lewbowski, Annie Hall, The Holy Grail, etc |
Crysis
12.04.11 | "No Country for Old Men is good... but it's not THAT good. But, you know, opinions and tastes, etc. :P"
I think everything about it is perfect. The setting, the acting and especially the script is amazing. I dunno, just exactly what I look for in a film. |
ShadowRemains
12.05.11 | speaking of tom hanks movies
FUCKIN' FORREST GUMP |
Vesper
12.05.11 | "Also, at the end it seemed a bit unrealistic."
Lol, it's the Coen Brothers, man. Most of their movies have a improbable aspect to their plots, to say the least.
"I think everything about it is perfect. The setting, the acting and especially the script is amazing."
Yeah, it's technically a great movie, and Bardem is awesome. It just fails to resonate with me, somehow. |
lucazade22
12.05.11 | yeah, I don't mind that in abstract or quirky films, but Fargo was quite a straight shooter.
Imo the best aspect of No Country is the setting. It's a character in itself. |
Crysis
12.05.11 | "and Bardem is awesome"
Indeed he is, but I think Tommy Lee Jones does the best work in the film. He's from the region where it takes place, so his fluidity and comfort in his role is unparalleled. |
Labeasy
12.07.11 | Memento and City of God have to be mentioned more. Also The Departed and The Prestige are honorable mentions for me. |
lucazade22
07.17.12 | Recently watched Mother, Chungking Express and Survive Style 5+. All really good films that would be pretty close to making the list! |
