11.28.11 | The most stressful part: I applied Early Decision to Colorado College (that one was due on 11/15), and according to them my decision will be emailed to me on December 22nd. It's not for another 3.5 weeks, but it feels so fucking close. If I'm accepted (ED is a binding contract) I won't have to worry about colleges again until I graduate while everyone else is stressed the fuck out in March, but if I'm denied I'll have to wait until March/April for all the other decisions AND I'll have the most depressing Christmas ever. I find myself obsessing over it mentally every night before I fall asleep, playing every possible outcome to death in my head... God DAMN, I need to get through the next 3.5 weeks intact. |

11.28.11 | See, one of the great things about Colorado College is that you only take one class at a time in 3.5 week periods. Apparently, there's hella work crammed into each block so it's not nearly as washed as it sounds like, but still... Chill as fuck. |

UC (applying to SD/LA/Berkeley) are due in four days and I started Friday. I didn't realize how late it was. I finished my essays (getting into them should be a breeze but idk you never know) and I also have to apply to USC by Dec 1 to qualify to get my National Merit Scholarship (auto-half ride if I'm accepted) so more essays there.
Gonna try to write and finish USC all today and submit them. Then I have like 6 private colleges to apply to by Jan1. Man these things suck. |

I turned those in last week. Careful there: I hear that if those come in too last-minute, there's a huge danger of them not actually getting in on time due to clogged UC servers. |

11.28.11 | @Ignim
Yeah I've heard that, too. That's why I'm going to send them in today. I likewise sent my Stanford app four days before the Common App Early Action date (Nov 1) to avoid running into clogged servers. |

Because unless you're trying to get into your safeties you don't really know if you're going to get into your #1 college. My friend has a 3.992 unweighted gpa 9-12 (one B all of high school) and he's worried he's not going to get into UCLA due to his 1960 SAT score. 11.28.11 | Canadian Universities require Essays, Porfolios, Reference Letters, Prerequisitory Classes, Entrance Supplementory Tests, and Letters of Interest depending on what school it is and if their program is competative. If a school is known for a specific program then they will try to weed out as many individuals as possible at the post-application stage. If my average wasn't over 80% I would have had to write a supplementary test for the programs I applied for. An example of a really competative program: Carleton University only accepts 200 students into their Journalism program. |

11.28.11 | DinoX, I don't know about Canada, but it really just varies in the US. Most of the top 50 colleges require an essay or two, but then some of the smaller/worse ones don't really.
I live in California so I know the Cal State system requires no essays (or rather, many of them require no essays) but the UC system does (even though several CSU's are better than UC Riverside or Merced)
All my colleges are top 35 though (10) so they all require essays (which are extremely important because they can help make me stand out from every other kid applying to Harvard or Stanford with perfect grades and scores) |

11.28.11 | It's really not the personal experience that matters as far as earning prospects go, it's the brand name that you want. You don't want the shitty community college brand, you want the ivy. Or as close to the ivy as possible. And I had godawful marks and got in on SATs and extracurriculars alone. And I'm not even a disadvantaged minority. 11.28.11 | Life is too long. The four or five years that is takes you to finish your degree will seem like no time at all afterwards. I have two jobs and take an average of 5 courses per year, 3 fall/winter term and 2 during the summer. Life is easy and I am earning my degree on time WHILE making a living and coming out of school debt free. Once you get accepted just maintain an above 70% average (or whatever the equivalent is in the American system) and take it slow, you get more out of what you learn and have time to gain job experience and have fun. |
BallsToTheWall
11.28.11 | I refuse to get "serious". Id rather just you know sit back and go with the flow. Or my l;ate 20's for that matter. |
Gilgamahesh
11.28.11 | All I'm saying is that I don't want to waste my time in community college. However I go to UQ in Brisbane, Australia and it costs 30% less than equivalent-tier institutions in America. So it's a bit easier on me than if I were still in the states. |
Gilgamahesh
11.28.11 | Balls, man, you sound just like I used to. And sure it's nice to just sit back and do whatever. But if you want to make shit happen you HAVE to get serious. And it's not like being serious means swearing off booze and tail. If it did then fuck degrees. |

There's no reason you can't enjoy yourself and get good grades, too. I've been doing that all of high school. Do I do crazy drugs or anything? Nah, but even then I bet I could still maintain my grades.
Besides, I want to be an engineer (probably aeronautical or electrical) so I don't buy the logic that I can half-ass my way into grad school and into a job. |
Gilgamahesh
11.28.11 | Travel is awesome, I've done quite a bit of it. I've lived around the states, and I've lived in various places in India and Singapore, and been around Malaysia and other places in Asia, and now obviously Australia. And I can tell you that the one thing travel takes (other than a strong stomach and some guts) is money, even if you opt to travel for real and not with the fucking tour guides and tourist traps. And I'm a gym rat myself. It's way easier to get fitter if you have the advantage of a good diet, which is difficult to get with a low paycheck. And doing the above doesn't necessitate working 24/7 either. A bit of discipline makes shit work for me, idk. |
BallsToTheWall
11.28.11 | Thats the shit I want to do, although moreso in Europe. Australia seems cool as well. Immersing myself in other cultures would be rad. That show Dhani Jones had on the travel guide going from country to country participating in their sports is an inspiration. |

11.28.11 | FourthReich,
The thing with CC is most people who go there waste their time. I've always said there's nothing
inherently wrong with community colleges; they only get a bad rep because they're supposed to help
people get to real four-year colleges, so all of the deadbeats end up going there (which is different
from saying all people who there are deadbeats which isn't true). But it sounds like you used it well
so good for you |
Gilgamahesh
11.28.11 | Whether or not there's anything inherently wrong with CC is not the point man, the point is, what decent job will take a CC grad? That said if CC and then a transfer is your best option then there's nothing wrong with it at all. I think Fourth's plan is solid. Just as long as you are able to get the backing of a well-respected university before you go out into the world. And these days it looks like even that's not a guarantee of a steady paycheck. |
toxin.
11.28.11 | Yeah, sorry, Gilgamahesh, that's what I meant. Go to CC and transfer after 2 years. That's really been the only viable thing to do with community college.
Anyways, just submitted USC app and as soon as my mom's back with her credit card I'll pay for and submit UC apps. Glad to have them off my chest |
