11.19.11 | it's insulting that one of the oldest forms of popular music is relegated to the 'other' section.
AN OUTRAGE I SAY |
bloc
11.19.11 | I play in a jazz/blues band so I stay away from it whenever I can haha |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | yo sonic, mingus jazzes so fuckin' hard I've stopped using him as foreplay music 'cause he makes me
blow my load before my girlfriend even gets out the bathroom |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | as in David? |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | yeah, John Mclaughlin is a goddamned god. Jeff Beck's fusion stuff rocks also |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | holy dissonance, Batman! |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | i've always been into the weirder end of traditional jazz than fusion generally, but when it's good, it's SO SO GOOD |
DominionMM1
11.19.11 | Is there an "essential jazz" list on here for noobs? |
Oathbreaker
11.19.11 | Needs more far east suite. |

11.19.11 | sputnik has no time for appreciating jazz, too busy with deathcore |
iFghtffyrdmns
11.19.11 | jazz is the next music I'm gonna try to get into in my forever continuous efforts to remain hip and culturally appreciated by my peers and friends. |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | obviously it's far from being any good or definitive, but my other jazz list has about 25 albums i'd consider essential |
Masochist
11.19.11 | jeffle - Agreed. What's your particular flavor of Jazz? |
Voivod
11.19.11 | Firstly, there's a serious lack of Jazzpreciation on this site
If that's the case, add and review as many Jazz bands as you can in here.
Bitching about is no solution.-
For example, check the Jan Garbarek and his page here. |
DominionMM1
11.19.11 | just checked rym. highest rated are Davis' Kind of Blue, Coltrane's A Love Supreme and 1. Good starters? |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | I started out with the more accessible fusion stuff like Beck, and Kind of Blue style cool jazz, but
at the moment I'm mainly jamming to 50s be-bop and pretty much everything Mingus has ever done, plus
some of the more adventurous 60s stuff from Coltrane
|
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | Dominion, Kind of Blue is a fantastic place to start, but I'd personally recommend Coltrane's Blue Train or Giant Steps, they're a bit more accessible than A Love Supreme |
TheFonz123

11.19.11 | Listening to 3 for the first time right now and its pretty good, but I just don't think I could constantly listen to it. |
Restrikted
11.19.11 | youre right. sputnik needs a jazz tab badly |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | I used to think 3 was the best jazz album ever, then I heard 2 and 1 |
TheFonz123
11.19.11 | Stan Getz is good but not great for me;some of his releases are amazing but others are iffy |
TheFonz123
11.19.11 | and by the way, the black saint and the sinner lady is imo the best album of all time. Period. check out "the Clown" by mingus, its amazing and im thinking of reviewing it as my first one for the sight |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | holy shit, I think I love you even more now for saying that....
But yeah, the Clown jams hard, the monologue on the title track is cool as well. of the 10 or so Mingus albums I've got on CD, i tend to prefer the later stuff like Mingus x5 and Black Saint, but Pithecanthropus Erectus is probably my favorite early work. Also, 'Let the Children Hear Music' is massively underrated and not all that far behind Black Saint IMO

jefflebowski
11.19.11 | don't worry man, I'm already well up with McLaughlin and co., but Axelrod is next on my listening schedule |
Recspecs
11.19.11 | Thanks for those jazz recs a few days ago jefflebowski, I'm loving that Mingus now. |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | glad you like it man, there's so much greatness in his discography |

11.19.11 | "Firstly, there's a serious lack of Jazzpreciation on this site. Secondly, rhow in god's name does it not have it's own section"
I'd much rather prefer jazz being 'preached' about and shoved down our throats than indie that's for sure, so I agree with this. |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | I mean, 'Alt/Indie' is such a vague term that it's pointless listing it as a genre |
Recspecs
11.19.11 | Agreed, this site definitely needs to reboot its entire genre system. |
Athom
11.19.11 | i make big jazz lists about once a year an from what i can tell, not too many people here know much of jazz beyond what they learned in high school band. |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | it's a sad thing, Jazz is probably the most rewarding genre I know of |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | especially to play |
Athom
11.19.11 | I only play guitar. Jazz guitar can be a fun challenge, but I think the most rewarding thing to play for me is blues stuff. Sure it's a lot simpler, but I can really get into it more than anything else. |
jefflebowski
11.19.11 | i agree man, there's nothing more fun than jamming round a 12-bar blues with a friend |

11.20.11 | Every time I listen to jazz, I feel like I'm being taken back to the vintage 1920s, the Jazz Age and I will start drinking and partying it off. Gooood times. |

11.20.11 | i like classical, because the composers are crazy scientists. they are as crazee as i am
jazz was originally a poor mans music. distinctly american, jazz is its own institution

11.20.11 | the cool thing about punk and metal and alt indie is that there's all these new albums with new songs
on them coming out all the time
in jazz everyones always redoing shit and the music generally avoids getting more than marginally
intense (except live)
