11.04.11 | And fuck bands like Structures, Volumes, Textures, etc. directly plagiarizing Meshuggah riffs and trying to recast them as their own. |
accompliceofmydeath
11.04.11 | Most djent bands annoy me as well, but I like a few. Fellsilent was a cool one, too. |
Trebor.
11.04.11 | All shit |
AfterTheBreakdown
11.04.11 | 9 is amazing. the rest of the list rules too. |
xandermander
11.04.11 | ALL SHIT? Meshuggah shits on you for being a twat. Also, fellsilent/monuments is pretty cool. |
Kubrick
11.04.11 | "And fuck bands like Structures, Volumes, Textures, etc. directly plagiarizing Meshuggah riffs"
Why did you include Textures? I haven't heard the others so maybe you're right about them but I don't think Textures plagiarizes Meshuggah at all. I really don't even think they sound alike honestly.. all of their similarities are pretty superficial. |
Zorak
11.04.11 | I dig djent style riffing. Cloudkicker is my favorite djent. I like The Contortionist as well, they have a few djenty riffs. |
xandermander
11.04.11 | I actually like Textures, but when they do have their downtuned/chuggy sections they are pretty much
directly ripping riffs off of Nothing. I was moreso saying I dislike the fact they use the EXACT same
riffs. I somewhat enjoy Volumes and Structures debut EP too. And the Contortionist is awesome but
not djent, they are their own little downtuned BTBAM-proggy-what-have-you. |
Eclecticist
11.04.11 | there are a couple of other good/great "djent" albums
Seven - Cymatics
Chimp Spanner - Discography
Animals As Leaders - Animals As Leaders (obviously)
Being - Arrival
Paul Wardingham - Assimilate Regenerate
but for the most part yes I agree, the djent genre is largely contrived |
Zorak
11.04.11 | yeah I know tc is djent. I just dig some of the djenty riffs they use. Such as the opening riff to flourish. But it seems every band is now jumping on this new djent bandwagon. |
xandermander
11.04.11 | AAL has some elements of the style, but they dabble in it moreso than immerse themselves. Same thing with Chimp Spanner. |
Kubrick
11.04.11 | You think so? Hm. I don't get that vibe at all honestly. Meshuggah's rhythmic style seems pretty different to me. Yeah they both like to play down-tuned, groovy, intricate rhythms but the actual sound of the grooves and the way they are incorporated into the songs are pretty different. Like I've never had flashes of Nothing while listening to anything by Textures. To each his own though :D |
Zorak
11.04.11 | I meant to say I know tc isn't djent. my bad |

11.04.11 | I agree bro, djent sucks. |

11.04.11 | I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW YOU CAN'T LIKE MESHUGGAH. And if you don't like US, then you just haven't
listened to it yet. It's a farking masterpiece. |
xenocide.
11.04.11 | I agree with 7, but 8 is also good, can't really get into 6, haven't listened to 9 & 10. |
anarchistfish
11.04.11 | I swear we get one of these lists every month or so |
xandermander
11.04.11 | Oh yeah Mr. Fish? Well mine is the best because half of it is the djentmi-gods themselves. |

ok pussy keep listening to indie |
Scoot
11.04.11 | cloudkicker isn't really djient anymore
7 is by far the closest thing to meshuggah that i can actually tolerate, the rest is just garbage. i can't believe i ever liked that periphery album.. |
pedro70512
11.04.11 | Is Gojira considered djent? |
KILL
11.04.11 | lol gojira djent |

11.04.11 | alrighty then. |
macadoolahicky
11.04.11 | OM MANI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good djent band right there! Listen to their track "Ajna" |
xandermander
11.04.11 | Periphery is only bad if you hate the vocals. Matt Halpern more than makes up for it with some out of this world drumming. |
TheSpirit
11.04.11 | cant we just call bad music, bad music |
Trebor.
11.04.11 | Meshuggah are boring as fuck that's why |
xandermander
11.04.11 | Trebor you seem so cool. And TheSpirit, your pie chart.... so much black metal, yet your most played artists include Times of Grace and Of Mice and Men. You seem to have good music all figured out. |
Trebor.
11.04.11 | Learn to sputnik |
Zorak
11.04.11 | kind of agree with treb. I like at least a little melody in my music. lol |
xandermander
11.04.11 | Trebor, you personify sputnik, I mean look at your Last.fm. Meshuggah doesn't need melody. 6 minutes of djents and a wacky guitar solo is all I need. |
Zorak
11.04.11 | I appreciate them for starting the whole djent thing though. so respect is given |
xandermander
11.04.11 | Outwardly, boring and not that impressive I'll admit. But the guitar and especially the drum rhythms are fucking weird as hell if you actually try to follow or count them out. |

11.05.11 | MESHUGGAH 4 LYFE

Wunderbar007
11.05.11 | Oh, wait, I meant Friend for a Foe |
bloc
11.05.11 | Friend For A Foe is okay, not really a band I would listen to more than a few times. |
Aids
11.05.11 | I have no real opinion on djent (other than it's the worst fucking name for a "genre" ever) but Meshuggah fucking rules. I can see why hoards of bands (apparently) want to rip them off. |
CakeWithCream
11.05.11 | this thread needs more Randy Blythe |

RobotJesus
11.05.11 | I got told Oceano was djent one day |
Relinquished
11.05.11 | Sikth doesn't have that "djent" sound in the guitars but I'd say Periphery are more closer in sound to them than Meshuggah. |
xandermander
11.05.11 | I would agree with that. Sikth are just awesome at everything. |
Relinquished
11.05.11 | Textures sounded the most like DEI era Meshuggah on Polars with a added elements. no one else from what I heard came close to Meshuggah, just 7-string guitar guys on meshuggah forums chuggging in math patterns with drum machines. Animals As Leaders are good because they added theory to the music. Other than them, no one is doing it right. |
AfterTheBreakdown
11.06.11 | @RobotJesus wow that's retarded. |
ChuckyTruant
01.19.12 | Djent isn't a genre. It's a technique used to play guitar. Geez. |
