The Joshua Tree

An obvious choice for a reason. From the shimmering opening three songs to the darker, foggier last two, it's a brilliant listen, full of both subtle texture and mood and catchy hooks, two things it's often difficult to strike a good balance between.

Achtung Baby

One of the best examples of a band successfully reinventing itself. Achtung Baby has a little bit of everything, it rocks (The Fly, Until The End of The World), is very danceable (Even Better Than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways), and is very moving (So Cruel, Love is Blindness). It's truly a musical journey, calm and intense in equal measure.

The Unforgettable Fire

I love this album because it's just so full of atmosphere, it's really easy to just get immersed in it. Also, The Unforgettable Fire and Bad might well be my two favourite U2 songs, there's something almost magical about them. The album trails off a bit for tracks 8 and 9 (a bit of a trend with U2 albums, except the above two) but then ends well with MLK, possibly the best closer of U2's career.

Pop

An incredibly underrated album, and the last time U2 really pushed the envelope. Bono has said that this album "Begins with a party and ends with a funeral," and this couldn't be more true, the first three songs are interesting and exciting (particularly Mofo) while the last three are truly beautiful. In between, there are plenty of great (if more standard) songs, altough once again tracks 8 and 9 let the side down.

War

The only album U2 made that could really be described as intense, this is far from the sort of uplifting anthems they are known for. Panicked and passionate, it really is unique in there discography, and has three of their best singles.

Zooropa

A very adventurous album that is too often ignored. It is by far the least accesible U2 album, and takes a few listens to "get," but is also their most rewarding. Sounds a bit like one big experiment, in a good, interesting way.

All That You Can't Leave Behind

A somewhat patchy album, with some of it made up of catchy, enjoyable pop songs with warm lyrics (Beautiful Day, In a Little While, Grace), some boring, half-cooked songs with cheesy lyrics (New York, When I Look At the World) and some that are just average. Still worthwhile.

Boy

The first five songs are unbeatable, largely because they're so energetic, but also because they just well-written songs. However, the song writing starts to falter on the second half, and you realise just how front-loaded this album is. Still good.

No Line On The Horizon

This album could have been really great, but the inclusion of three songs in the middle absolutely kills the atmosphere that the first four had built up. The album never really recovers, altough White as Snow is lovely and Cedar of Lebanon has great lyrics.

October

Average.

Rattle and Hum

Two incredible songs, and the rest of the studio material is just filler. It's telling that most of the best tracks are live versions of songs from other albums.

How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own is great. The rest of this album is either utterly forgettable or cheesy and just plain bad.
