Albums I Look Forward To Regularly.
Not just songs (that would be a differant list) but entire albums I
look forward to listening to on a regular basis. These are my
standby's and I alwayse look on them with some sort of emotion
whether it be love, happyness, mischeviousness or sorrow. These
would be the albums I occationally can't imagine people not
enjoying but then I remember that taste is subjective and I sigh.
They are some of the albums that keep me loving music and keep
me consuming new music at a rate not typical of the average
person. In many cases the selections stay on my favorits list
simply because they resorect old memories. These are not (in my
opinion) deserving of praise so much as I've simply had the good
fortune to have found them or they me. As alwayse with my lists if
there is one you have not heard or are completely unfamiliar with
feel free to consider it a rec. I have no doubt that much of my list
would simply be considered old hat but the selections are from all
across my life so some will be far newer than others. Unfortunatly
my memory is so shitty from a half a life of abuse I regularly can't
remember even a tenth of all the shit I love. I'm trying to stay
away from stuff I found here or finally gave a listen because of
you guys because that stuff just gets listed to death (as will some
of these anyway). Have a wonderfull Fall day Sputbros and
sputbroetts and Without further ado, in the order it poured out of
my brain: |
1 | | Van Morrison Astral Weeks
Van Morrison A.K.A. Van the man A.K.A George Ivan Morrison is hands down
my favorite musician. He is a one man show with a unique voice that cannot
be duplicated. For these reasons he is the only one who gets multiple slots
and I could have easily doubled the number of albums I posted. He is one
of the most covered artists and you probably aren't even aware of it. |
2 | | Van Morrison Moondance |
3 | | Van Morrison Hard Nose The Highway |
4 | | Van Morrison Saint Dominic's Preview |
5 | | MC Chris Eating's Not Cheating
As legend has it he made is first album with the help of "MTV Music
Generator" and I honestly wouldn't doubt it. He is endlessly amusing to me
and he comes up with some great lines no matter how steeped in nerd life
they may be. |
6 | | Grand Buffet Sparkle Classic
Similar to MC Chris they have great music with a high percentage of humor
but are far more abstract about it. |
7 | | Jethro Tull Original Masters
It's a best of and it misses a ton of great songs but it was my introduction
to them and It will always have a place in my heart for that reason. |
8 | | Counting Crows Across A Wire
These guys have a lot of great albums but this one is a stand out fr it's two different versions of their most popular songs from their first two albums. |
9 | | Bob Dylan Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits
Like so many of the greatest hits that will proliferate in this list it is the
most memorable album cover that I can remember form my fathers album
collection. Dylan was my fathers favorite musician and for that reason I
didn't like him and even refused to listen to him until after my father passed
away. |
10 | | Magnapop Hot Boxing
Just reminds me of hanging around with my friends back in the day. |
11 | | Cranes Forever
Similar to the last one. |
12 | | Jack Johnson Brushfire Fairytales
Reminds me of a lost friend I loved and meeting my wife. |
13 | | G. Love and Special sauce Philadelphonic
collage radio music from when I should have been in collage. ;^) |
14 | | Bloodhound gang Use Your Fingers
Whole everyone was shouting "The Roof, The Roof" we were saying "You're
Pretty When I'm Drunk". |
15 | | CKY Volume 2
These two pretty much have to go hand in hand. The prank calls on here
are some of the best. All I can say is Dog Fence. |
16 | | Blind Faith Blind Faith
One of the most memorable album covers from my fathers collection and a
pretty great fucking album too. |
17 | | Paul simon Graceland
In 1986 my parents went on a cruse and came back with this album. I loved
it the first time I heard it and have had every lyric memorized for going on
30 years now. |
18 | | Simon and Garfunkel Greatest Hits
This has to be one of the best selling best of albums of all time. Every track
is gold. I honestly don't think most people are even aware this duet put out
5 LP's prior to Paul going solo. |
19 | | Leo Sayer Just a Boy
Long Tall Glasses in one of my favorite upbeat songs of all time. I really
think this guy gets a raw deal but I've never heard any of his other albums
so... |
20 | | Traffic Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory
"John Barleycorn Must Die" is obviously the better album but Shoot Out just
has more memories for me and I always loved this cover. |
21 | | Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy
IV is a great album but it has seriously been all but killed for me. When I
was growing up it was till very popular and was played on the cafeteria
jukebox at school EVERY DAY. Houses of the Holy has become my alternate
favorite. |
22 | | The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Another favorite of my fathers. We would listen to this together many many
times over the years. I would always ask "not a live album huh" and he
would say "Nope" and I would just be confused by that until I was old
enough to figure out what ambiance was. |
23 | | Janis Joplin Pearl
Damn shame what this lady done did to herself. |
24 | | The Doors The Best of The Doors
By the time CDs came out I think my father purchased best of albums
because A.) There were just to many albums he wanted but had a limited
budget to work with and B.) he had probably already purchased a bunch of
them in at least one other format and refused to repurchase an album.
There were exceptions to the rule of course e.g. Morrison, The Beatles and
Dylan. |
25 | | The Grateful Dead Terrapin Station
A throw back to my more unsavory days but they really did have a lot of
great tunes. I guess if you put out enough shit some of it has to smell
sweet right? |
26 | | Eagles Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) |
27 | | Fleetwood Mac Rumours
This fucking album... |
28 | | David lee Roth Skyscraper
It was one of the first times I took a gamble and it payed off. I got it out of
a bargain bin and it ended up being better than I had expected. |
29 | | Crowbar Odd Fellows Rest
Passed on to me by a friend and I instantly loved it. |
30 | | Arrested Development 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days...
I liked their message and took a gamble on an album that payed off in
spades. |
31 | | Fear Factory Obsolete
Same as Crowbar, it was passed on to me by a friend and I instantly loved it. |
32 | | Nine Inch Nails Broken
Already listening to Ministry, SP and dead kennedys, NIN was the new kid
on the block and we liked the direction he was headed in. I've listened to
and at one time owned at least one copy of almost everything he's ever put
out. |
33 | | Tool Opiate
Short and sweet I like hearing where a band I like comes from. |
34 | | Nirvana Bleach
Same as with Opiate. |
35 | | Subhumans The Day the Country Died
Showed up in our group as a random cassette tape and we loved its Raw
visceral nature immediately. This reminds me more than almost any other
album save NIN and Ministry of my early and mid teen years. |
36 | | Ministry The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste
Can't even begin to properly explain how much I love the world these guys
opened up to me. |
37 | | 10000 Maniacs Our Time In Eden
Great fucking album, nuff said. |
38 | | R.E.M. New Adventures In Hi - Fi |
39 | | Tori Amos Boys for Pele
Any of her first three albums could go here. She was wonderfully unique
and was pushing the boundaries of Alt music at the time. |
40 | | Bjork Homogenic
Any of her first three albums could go here. She was wonderfully unique
and was pushing the boundaries of Alt music at the time. |
41 | | Aphex Twin Richard D. James Album
I can't begin to add up the number of hours I spent digging through used
record store's bins looking for albums that were tossed away by people
because he wasn't what they had expected. |
42 | | Rollins Band Weight
Bad ass album |
43 | | Bad Religion Generator
This may have been my first taste if Bad Religion. It may not have been but
this was the first album of theirs that I absolutely loved. To this day it is still
my favorite. It reminds me of shooting down back roads with my buddy Kev
on our way to or from somewhere hoping to find a way to kill some time. If
anyone remembers my "Army Recruiters Office" story this is that same guy. |
44 | | Pop Will Eat Itself Dos Dedos Mis Amigos
This goes hand in hand with Generator. My buddy Kev introduced me to this
one and it conjures the same memories for me. |
45 | | Alice in Chains Sap
I remember this coming out and it was a big deal if you had it. |
46 | | Annie Lennox Diva
IMO she has one of the greatest voices of the last century and she is
criminally looked over in general. |
47 | | Black Box Dreamland
Not sure how this popped into my head but I do have the CD and it really is
a great album... or was. |
48 | | Creeper Lagoon Take Back The Universe And Give Me Yesterday
I've put this in a lot of lists lately and I'll leave it at that. |
49 | | Spitvalves Fine Print At The Bottom
I had completely forgotten about this album until Ty put it in a list a few
days ago. I used to play the shit out of this album. If you like Third wave or
Punk this is a must have IMO. It really leans more toward punk with some
brass than it does Ska IMO. |
50 | | Steve Winwood Back in the High Life
It was standard radio fare when I was growing up but it had the distinction
of being good. |
51 | | Bob Seger Against the Wind
Same as the last description. |
52 | | Moody Blues On the Threshold of a Dream
This album was key to how I look at music these days. |
53 | | Red Hot Chili Peppers Mother's Milk
One of the first albums I ever purchased on CD. |
54 | | Jimmy Buffett Changes in Latitude, Changes is Attitude
This album is criminally neglected. If you can get over the fact that he
compares everything to a life of sailing then you will be rewarded with
some terrific music and some great stories. |
55 | | Tenacious D Tenacious D |
56 | | Jackson Browne The Next Voice You Hear: The Best of Jackson Browne
This is hands down one of the best "best of" albums there is. There is a
very good chance you have heard something of Jackson Browne's without
ever even finding out it was his. The guy does have some stuff you can do
without but this album has some absolute musts on it. |
57 | | The Chemical Brothers Dig Your Own Hole
Either this or "Better Living Through Chemistry" was my gateway Electronica album. I can't even remember half the Electronica albums I have
but there is a pretty good chance it started with this one. |
58 | | Steve Miller Band Greatest Hits 1974-1978
I don't think there were more than a handful of people in my High School
that didn't have this album in there car. It was just one of those albums
that if no one could agree on what to listen to then Steve Miller band was
going in and everyone was fine with it. |
59 | | Creedence Clearwater Revival Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits
If you're not familiar with their catalog this is a good place to start. |
60 | | Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young So Far
This is one of those rare instances where (like Simon and Garfunkel) the
greatest hits is more popular than most of their LPs. This is an iconic album
cover that is recognized by people who aren't even fans of the band. |
61 | | Neil Young Harvest
Classic album is Classic... 5/5 |
62 | | Helmet Meantime
one of my first forays into hard rock and it's been one of my favorites ever
since. |
63 | | Dambuilders Ruby Red
One of the most popular Indie alt-rock bands of the 90's they were quickly
forgotten as there "sound" was left behind in the late 90's. They were a
great live band if any of you were ever lucky enough to have seen them. |
64 | | Squarepusher Music Is Rotted One Note
Description would be similar to the one for Aphex Twin except that AT led
me here. |
65 | | Stereolab Sound-Dust
These guys were pretty popular for about a minute and I'm surprised they
don't get rec'd a little more often on here. |
|
