10.07.11 | Try to hold off on metal. For now, I think 1 is a good start for that. Try to keep it to alt rock too. |
TheArkitecht
10.07.11 | Yeah metal would be a bad idea to start out with haha. Try A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step. It's a stunning album. |
Inveigh
10.07.11 | Minus the Bear - Planet of Ice |

10.07.11 | I don't think any of these are good choices at all. You need music that is immediately accessible as well as addictive for casual listeners. These are albums I've had high success with:
fun. - Aim and Ignite
Sigur Ros - ( )
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Frank Turner - Love Ire and Song
Jack's Mannequin - Everything in Transit |

10.07.11 | Yeah I got caught up wanting to give albums that I really like and connect with rather than albums that are easy to get into. |
Yazz_Flute
10.07.11 | Opeth |
foreverendeared
10.07.11 | I think all the albums listed so far are great choices except The Downward Spiral, which may be a bit too dark for a casual music listener. |
dammets
10.07.11 | I chose TDS for that reason. To show how dark and atmospheric music can be. |
ZilbelPing
10.07.11 | I guess 'softer' things like alt rock/indie/folk/post rock would do fine. 4 and 3 are excellent choices.
Try
Minus the Bear-Planet of Ice/Menos el Oso
Circa Survive-Juturna (everyone I've shown this always seem to like it)
Mew-Frengers
Explosions in the Sky-The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place
A Perfect Circle-Thirteenth Step
Sunny Day Real Estate-Diary
Modest Mouse-The Moon and Antarctica
The Dear Hunter-Act III: Life and Death
And when you want to get her into heavier stuff, start with some post hardcore then ease her into metal. |

10.07.11 | The Everglow by Mae is a really good album, it's accessible, and the vocals are stunning. It will definitely appeal to someone who listens to radio pop. Here's one of my favorite songs off the album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sCRIOQRGO4&feature=related |
foreverendeared
10.07.11 | Yeah The Everglow is a good one also Anberlin will be really easy to get into for radio listeners. |
taxidermist
10.07.11 | The Strokes-Angles. Women love it. |
InAbsentia
10.07.11 | Arcade Fire - Funeral
Bon Iver - Discography
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream |
Masochist
10.07.11 | Lots of good stuff rec'd; I second
Anberlin - 'Cities'
Mae - 'The Everglow'
Mew - 'Frengers'
Porcupine Tree - 'Stupid Dream'
But before all that...what specific kind of popular music does she enjoy now? Pop, hip-hop, rock...? |
DeathByDaydream
10.07.11 | anal cunt - everyone should be killed |
toxin.
10.07.11 | Needs moar Anberlin-Cities, Mae-The Everglow (geez Masochist ninja'd me), Jimmy Eat World-Futures, Third Eye Blind- Third Eye Blind, Weezer- Blue Album.
Catchy but good (and generally emotional at times) Alt-Rock.
Also for some accessible indie you could give Death Cab - Plans, The Shins - Oh, Inverted World, and Arcade Fire - Funeral |
toxin.
10.07.11 | By the way if she's like me who needed catchiness in music for it to stick, you might want to start with Deja or even YFW for Brand New. When I listened to TDAGARIM (when I was listening to radio rock) I thought it was weird, boring, and bad. The hooks are generally more subtle there and the instrumentation is hard to appreciate.
I liked Deja a lot more on first listen, and after I got used to their more reflective side (The Boy Who Blocked His Shot, Play Crack the Sky) I really started to appreciate TDAGARIM |

10.07.11 | "I liked Deja a lot more on first listen, and after I got used to their more reflective side (The Boy Who Blocked His Shot, Play Crack the Sky) I really started to appreciate TDAGARIM"
^^^ This. Also, all those albums I listed are albums that were already rec'd by other people :-P |
Trebor.
10.07.11 | Modest Mouse |
Tyrael
10.07.11 | I think 1 might be a little heavy for someone that only listens to radio stuff, same for 4. I remember the first time I listened to TDAG I had a minor emotional breakdown... |
dammets
10.07.11 | I thought I'd start wiith 1 metal album and I think White Pony is a good choice because of the sensual atmosphere.
She has an open mind anyway and is kind of an emotional person, so TDAG would be good for her. |
dammets
10.07.11 | And she's heard some System of a Down so 1 isn't too much of a stretch. |
Brumas
01.06.12 | Gorguts - Obscura |
