| A Dramatic Turn Of Rank
Mike Mangina | 9 | Dream Theater Build Me Up Break Me Down
lol | 8 | Outcry
Probably the worst epic the band has ever done. It's got some cool keyboard
work in the solos but for the most part it just drags. | 7 | Far From Heaven
A piano ballad much in the vain of "vacant." I've grown to really enjoy this
track, but it doesn't really serve much of a purpose other than the short
breather sandwiched between three of the album's longest cuts. It's enjoyable
for sure though. | 6 | Bridges in the Sky
Has some of the more metal riffs on the album. At roughly 11 minutes, Bridges
in the Sky is fairly uninteresting, but the chorus and the final bridge are
fantastic and save the song from being any lower. | 5 | On the Backs of Angels
The keys bring to mind Derek Sherinian (sp?) but it's a bit long and Labrie just
sounds uninspired (even if the chorus is admittedly catchy). | 4 | This Is the Life
This is a very well-written song. It starts off modest enough before culminating
in grand fashion. I don't feel like writing real descriptions anymore I'm too
fucking hungry but I like this song a lot. | 3 | Beneath The Surface
I ended up really enjoying all of the ballad-type tracks on A Dramatic Turn of
Events, and they really nailed it with this one. While it's a bit of an odd choice as
a closer, Beneath the Surface is undoubtedly gorgeous. Labrie is the main point
of focus throughout the whole song and gives one of the most convincing
performances he's given in years. Portnoy's departure surely helped inspire
what might be the most effective ballad Dream Theater have ever written. At
least since "Lifting Shadows Off a Dream." | 2 | Lost Not Forgotten
There's a little more wank in this song than the others, but I found myself really
enjoying it. John and Jordan's dueling wizardry at the beginning is one of the
high points of the album. Once the bulk of the song gets started, the structure
becomes very simple. But it's remains effective and doesn't lose focus from
there. The bridge at 4:54 is straight out of Awake and I love it. | 1 | Breaking All Illusions
This seems to be the unanimous favorite around here, and it's well-deserved.
They really need to let Myung write more, it appears that every time he
contributes to the song-writing process/lyrics it ends up being among the band's
strongest cuts (Learning to Live, Trial of Tears, Fatal tragedy). There's not a lot
if any balls-out metal throughout the songs 12-minute duration which is a nice
touch. It listens like a modern take on Images and Words or Awake. Also the
chorus soars, possibly the most since Home. | |

09.20.11 | I agree with 1, 2, and 9. I'd also probably switch 5 and 6, but they're pretty interchangeable. | Yazz_Flute

Build Me Up, Break Me Down
The top 2 are the only ones I can really see myself listening to very much though. Bland album. | Yazz_Flute
09.20.11 | I actually had Beneath the Surface as my number 1 the first few listens I gave the album. As a whole I prefer the album to Systematic Chaos and Octavarium. | peartnoy
09.25.11 | Lost Not Forgotten could be my least favorite. Every other song is great in my opinion. The first time I heard Beneath The Surface I had chills the whole time. |
