09.13.11 | well see the Tea Party is just this hilarious little faction of hypocrites who all believe the same way then refuse to admit they're a even a group
For instance Rick Perry believes in all of the staples of the Tea Party (abortion should be illegal, we should amend the Constitution to ban gay marriage, global warming is scientifically viable yet the laziness of blacks and mexicans is scientifically proven, etc.), yet won't admit to actually being a member of the Tea Party.
He has, however, admitted to tasting some mushroom tea in college. But he didn't swallow. |

09.13.11 | UhhKris, it isn't surprising to me as I hear the "take responsibility" argument from my republican
friends all the time. To a certain degree I agree with it but when it gets taken to excess as
thought there is no room for deviation from a two word catch phrase (like in the video) is where I
call bullshit. I believe in socialist medical care. 25 years ago I would not have but I can't afford
the medications I need... 50% taxes is better than being unhealthy and worrying about your future
being decimated by one necessary surgery imo. More than anything though I'd be willing to pay 50%
taxes as a fuck you to our medical and insurance industry. They are bilking us relentlessly and the
republicans think it's fine because it's a democracy. Being so blindly one sided and assuming no
theory ever needs revision is so stunningly Vatican like it stupefies me. But no, countries
centuries
older than us couldn't possibly have the right answer. There is nothing wrong with borrowing ideas
from another culture... just fucking improve on it. They already have decades of right and wrong
moves under their belt. |

09.14.11 | @eternium, lol I didn't address it because I completely agree with that part.
I just wanted to point out that people who don't like welfare/affirmative action aren't necessarily racist.
Affirmative Action in itself is racist, and I'm fucking ashamed to live in a country that would (hypothetically) take a less-qualified minority (such as African/Hispanic) over another minority (Asian Indian [me]) for any reason. |
eternium
09.14.11 | I watched the debate. If he was really against letting people die then he would have rebuked the audience and been clear about it, just like he did when saying that Al Qaeda isn't attacking us for our freedoms despite everyone else being stupid and believing that. |
kris.
09.14.11 | thats true
but i don't really think he believes that
if he does hes a fucking awful doctor and an awful person in general |
eternium
09.14.11 | @xtoxic - Affirmative action doesn't choose less qualified over more qualified, in fact some have tried such a thing and taken to court over it. Fact is that minorities on average have miniscule amounts of wealth compared to whites, still have high dropout rates, higher unemployment, etc. |
toxin.
09.14.11 | @eternium, yeah, but under affirmative action, that can happen. And any policy that lets that happen is bullshit.
And if you're going to say "minorities" be specific about it, because I'm also a minority and I don't get affirmative action benefits (and really, I support the "you reap what you sow" philosophy, so I wouldn't want any bonus for being a minority). Just because things can be isolated to race doesn't mean there's some external racism. Some of it is internal, i.e., the culture they grow up in. (Just look at the thug culture, as opposed to the cultural norms of Asian-Americans who value school a lot more) |
eternium
09.14.11 | It can't happen, it's against the law for it to happen. I'll be honest, Asians and whites tend to be more intelligent on average but that isn't enough to explain the huge disparities between those two and blacks/Hispanics. If one person didn't get a good education because he was black then his child will be affected by that. Poverty most often lasts for generations and America isn't what it used to be, it is far more difficult to escape nowadays. |
toxin.
09.14.11 | I'm not 100% sure of affirmative action in the business world, so I can't say anything. I'm definitely leaning towards college acceptance, which is something else.
And I definitely agree that there's some disparity, but I mean really, it's not like Affirmative Action is the solution to it. I mean part of it is simply improving education in cities (and in the US in general) so that they could be successful. Part of it is the culture they grow up in.
Affirmative Action solves neither.
(btw some of the strictest parents are the black ones in traditional parental families. It's really the broken families that perpetuate the cycle of poverty). Also I don't buy that blacks/hispanics are less intelligent. Not enough data to prove that. |
eternium
09.14.11 | There's plenty of data. Also this: http://pewresearch.org/pubs/2069/housing-bubble-subprime-mortgages-hispanics-blacks-household-wealth-disparity |
toxin.
09.14.11 | I meant data about blacks/hispanics being less intelligent. |
eternium
09.14.11 | That's the data that shows why we still need affirmative action. http://www.vdare.com/articles/debating-the-unmentionable-the-black-white-iq-gap
Then again it's largely affected by the fact that the smart ones were killed off during slavery. |
toxin.
09.14.11 | Tbh I don't understand how any of those articles/ data support your point. |
OysterizerInsomniac
09.14.11 | As much as I am disappointed in Obama for not standing up to the republicans enough, I think I'll be voting for him rather than the Socialist Party simply because all the conservatives will vote for the republicans so any vote for an independent or 3rd party is one less vote the democrats have against the republicans and I don't want to hold myself responsible for letting a republican back into office. |
Vesper
09.14.11 | eternium, basically, the bottom line is that if you're Asian, you'd be stupid to support affirmative action, as it doesn't benefit us at all and often works against us. East Asians typically perform better academically than even whites (often required to have higher scores, all else equal - I can't remember the article, but it was something like a 200 point difference on the SAT). Most elite Ivies and liberal arts colleges only want to give up so many spots to the *nerdy Asians*, so they control for our admission based on ethnic background.
All else considered, I understand why many people support it, but Asians - especially poor and/or ill-educated Asians who are at an even greater disadvantage because they are at the bottom of a highly competitive pool that gets no favors - often do not as far as their self-interest is concerned.
Not to mention, this often increases tensions between these preferred and non-preferred groups. Notice how your articles only compare the majority whites to the minority black and Hispanic groups? Asians are often left out of those studies and our position on the minority spectrum is pretty hazy. |
toxin.
