JoeEspionage
09.03.11 | I'm not really into horror except for a few stephen king novels, but he's kinda overrated. What other kind of stuff do you like? I really like David Foster Wallace and John Irving right now. |
SpottedTrout
09.03.11 | I read Salem's Lot by Stephen King earlier this summer, would recommend and you could try Into the Wild by Tana French. Not really horror, but its got its freaky moments |
Restrikted
09.03.11 | Stephen King rules. It was awesome. Took me 4 days to read. |
Detriment2
09.03.11 | Feed (from the Newsflesh Trilogy) is a good one, if you like zombies. its a fresh take on a well-trodden path. |
PostModernJellyfish
09.03.11 | The Cell by Stephen King is pretty good. The whole plot is about a guy who witnesses an apocalypse of the world brought on by signals emitted by people's cell phones that turn their owners into homicidal maniacs. It's awesome. |
Acanthus
09.03.11 | I second Feed, though I feel like there needn't be a sequel.
Can't go wrong with Lovecraft either. |
JoeEspionage
09.03.11 | Yeah I never read for a really long time but about a year ago I really picked up on it. Stephen King is overrated. I haven't read all his stuff but from what I've read he's very hit and miss. |
Blind
09.03.11 | fuck everything but the lord of the rings |

09.03.11 | Yeah, Stephen King is overrated. I read the behemoth Under The Dome awhile back and hated it. My favorite of his is probably Misery or The Stand. But the best horror novel I've ever read is Carrion Comfort or Summer of Night, both by Dan Simmons. I couldn't recommend him enough. |
PostModernJellyfish
09.03.11 | Anything by Edgar Allen Poe. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty. |
JoeEspionage
09.03.11 | Oh yeah the silence of the lambs is really good. |
FearThyEvil
09.03.11 | Stephen King The Shining |
Acanthus
09.03.11 | For me Poe and Lovecraft go hand in hand. |
toxin.
09.03.11 | I've heard The Picture of Dorian Gray was good but I'm not sure if it's quite horror |
JoeEspionage
09.03.11 | @xtoxin
That was the most homoerotic book I've ever read. But it wasn't bad. |
Blind
09.03.11 | nick stop saying newfag 4chan shit is retarded even when it's done on 4chan let alone a different site |
toxin.
09.03.11 | @joe, does that make it not-horror? lol. I just read an overview on Wiki though, and yeah it sounds all homo. |
Cuggymunt
09.03.11 | if you can get past the initial shock of the language then try reading A Clockwork Orange, not really a horror novel but its really violent and engaging. I dont think the film really does it justice
'We need to talk about kevin' by lionel shriver is really good
and if you want more classic gothic style I really recommend 'Rebecca' by daphne du maurier, Dracula, Frankenstein and Jekyll and Hyde.
Dracula drags in places but its well worth it |
Acanthus
09.03.11 | Dracula is amazingly great, and A Clockwork Orange film I quite enjoyed. |
JoeEspionage
09.03.11 | Nah it's horror. Just wanted to point that out. |
Cuggymunt
09.03.11 | im shit with genres, both in literature and music
forgot to mention dr faustus, i love that so much |
Boyaawitcheese
09.03.11 | The long walk by Stephen King/ R.B. is my favorite of his books. |
Winesburgohio
09.03.11 | American Psycho is fucking horrific.
AND AND AND Crime and Punishment is unsettling enough for it to classify as 'horror' imo. Or anything by Dostoyevsky really. |
thecheatisnotdead
09.03.11 | As others have said, Poe and Lovecraft are always quality. House of Leaves sort of takes a while to get going, and can be deliberately alienating at times, but it's an extremely good, unsettling, and cerebral piece of horror writing. (Sort of similar, but not quite as deep and much easier to get through, is The Raw Shark Texts. Not really straight-up horror, but interesting nonetheless.) |
Eclecticist
09.03.11 | DRACULA by BRAM STOKER |
North0House2
09.03.11 | You need some Dr. Seuss. |
RangerTaffles
09.03.11 | Read some H.P Lovecraft. |
Adash
09.03.11 | "Anything by Edgar Allen Poe." I completely support this statement.
But really, all you need is Harry Potter and the Crock of Shit or something by Dan Brown. That genuinely terrifies me |
jefflebowski
09.03.11 | HP LOVECRAFT HP LOVECRAFT HP LOVECRAFT.
Furthermore, HP Lovecraft |
GodL1ke
09.03.11 | i second HP Lovecraft, and i'm surprised no one has mentioned Dean Koontz (who has cited lovecraft as an influence). his earlier works were a very interesting mixture of sci-fi and horror but later on he dropped the sci-fi element.
read Whispers by Koontz |
jefflebowski
09.03.11 | 1984 is actually pretty horrifying if you think about how the story pans out |
PurpleDino
09.03.11 | I Am Legend is an awesome book
sort of horror/sci-fi |
Puzzles
09.03.11 | I really dig poetry. I'm not really much of a reader though. It takes too long... ahha |
