My Favorite Post Rock Releases of all Time | | 1 |  | Jakob
Solace
It's hard to describe, why this band takes the first spot on my list. If you take a first look at Jakob and their best Album to date, solace, there is nothing spectacular about them. Sure they may have one of the, if not the single best drummer in the genre but even Johnstons drumming is by no means spectacular if you look at it, solely from a technical viewpoint. In fact i have spent some time wondering, why I love this Band and in particular this album so much. Finally I concluded, that Jakobs brilliance lies within the perfect timing of every note, the effort which has gone in tweaking every song till it has reached perfection. Every Track on this LP delivers, everything flows together so masterfully, the chord progressions are better than anything I have heard before and the timing on every climax is just perfect. The overall dark and haunting atmosphere is just great, and it never gets too dark, which would make an full listen exhausting. There is always a spark of light flickering, while the rhythmic section punches dark base line after dark baseline, Boyles delayed guitar always takes a stand against the nearly overwhelming pounding of Drum/Bass without being to shiny or anything. After all I just adore every song on this LP. Driven by the ingenious drumming of Johnston and Jeff Boyle's beautiful, yet eerie guitar effects Solace is my favorite peace of Post Rock up to date. I would like to add that I respect Jakob for not being as pretentious as other post rock bands, and not giving their songs ridiculous names, but instead of that just creating sincere and honest music. | | 2 |  | Godspeed You! Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas...
The obvious pick. An all time classic, every song is a true masterpiece. Everything has been said about this album about a thousand times, and it only comes in second because i sometimes find it hard to sit through the whole thing, because it demands even more attention from the listener than other Post rock (which is fine, but sometimes exhausting) | | 3 |  | Mogwai
Happy Songs for Happy People
Mogwai have made a whole lot of great songs in their career and they still throwing out some really nice songs(You're Lionel Richie, Mexican Grand Prix on their Last LP). But if you ask me, they always struggeld to make a consistently enjoyable album and often times got boring in the mid section of their albums.(looking at you Young team... though it's considered to be their best on this site) Well... with that said. I love Happy Songs for Happy People. And I love every song on it, though I think the first half is a liiiiittle bit stronger. The concept of relatively short post rock songs works very well for them, especially because Mogwais more laid back tracks tend to get boring if they drag on for too long. My favorite Mogwai Song is on this too. Kids will be Skeletons is a timeless post rock classic. | | 4 |  | Meniscus
Absence of I
Meniscus has really impressed me on this ep. 4 very strong, highly technical post rock anthems, with awesome melodies, awesome dynamic changes and very good, powerful drumming and some really good work on the keyboard(Cusp). The Drummer is nearly as good as Johnston from Jakob. Really looking forward to the release War of Currents. Haven't listend to it yet. | | 5 | | pg.lost
It's Not Me, It's You!
One of the better known Post-Rock Bands today, pg.lost have established a solid fanbase with their strong debut, It's not me, It's you. Though they tend to get very formulate at times, their songs nearly always work. The guitar work is especially great on their first LP, which becomes evident on the last song, Siren one of the very best post rock songs I have ever heard. | | 6 | | *Shels
Plains of the Purple Bufallo
One of the best releases of 2011 in my opinion, the second LP of *shels is a real stunner. The Band tweaked the basically really formulate Songs like Journey to the Plains(starts out quiet, get's louder and louder till it explodes) with some additional Trumpets, and sometimes vocals. They also can always rely on the power of some crushing hard guitar work from their guitar player. | | 7 |  | Isis
Panopticon
Isis had a really brilliant intuition to always craft an awesome melody, but the whole growling and yelling from their vocalist maybe good for metal fans, but is not really for me. With that said... Panopticon is just too good to be dismissed. Especially The first 4 songs are insanely good. The contrast between stunningly beautiful and brutally hardcore is especially present on backlit, which is the best song on the LP in my opinion. | | 8 |  | Talk Talk
Laughing Stock
Post Rock basically started with this. And it still holds up very well, I just love the overall dark and eerie feeling of this LP. | | 9 |  | Vessels
White Fields and Open Devices
Very interesting mix of Indie and Post Rock with an relatively big vocal part. It's always refreshing to listen to bands who try to stray away from the formulate and Vessels succeed more often than not. Some tracks on this are really outstanding(Yuki, Walking Through Walls) and their second release is just as good. | | 10 |  | God is an Astronaut
The End of the Beginning
God is an Astronaut is a one trick pony if you ask me. They basically make the same song over and over again. Neither the guitar playing nor the drumming has evolved at all since 2003 and every song sounds like this one space post rock track you have heard before. But goddamn it, it is hard not to enjoy at least some of their songs. Many of their melodies are good and I just have a soft spot for the spacey feeling they always try to create. The Beginning of the End is the most consistent and enjoyable LP of this band in my opinion. The Opener is a really good track. | |

Ah yeah and Explosions in the Sky, but were as i respect Mono, Yndi and Sigur a lot i think that Explosions in the sky is even more of a one trick pony than God is an Astronaut and that you only need to listen to your Hand in mine and maybe The only Moment we were Alone and than you heard everything the band has to offer. | qdgyu

the fact they share the same vision, all are equally as talented and they brought everything they
could to the table with solace. the best material, the best production, the best playing... it's the
best realization of a consistent atmosphere i've ever heard. it's a blank canvas to assign significant
memories and emotions to with no drawbacks and where nothing there is "special", everything is just
perfect. it's the best modern post-rock record by a significant margin. :] |
