| Lollapalooza Day 2 Review
Saturday was by far the busiest day I had planned for this weekend, with any break in the action used to find good spots for the next performer. Also to buy chicken tenders. Here's the six artists I saw today (not counting An Horse, who I just sat through to wait for M&A). | | 1 | Maps & Atlases
The only stage I've gotten to the front of so far was this, which was easy because I was early and it was at the Google+ stage. The band seemed very happy just to be there, but that didn't stop them from playing at a high level. Dave Davison had a beard longer than the cutoff jorts he was wearing, which was unsettling. The tapping from both guitarists and the bass player had me consistently in awe. It's weird to me how these indie/math musicians make it look so smooth. Don't have a setlist but I can tell you they played Living Decorations and closed with Solid Ground. | | 2 | Death From Above 1979
This was the highlight of the day for me by far. There was so much more energy in these two guys than any band I've seen in a long time. It's weird to see a drumming frontman find a way to control the stage, but he did. He even got out from behind the drums to sing and went over to wrap his arm around the woman who was doing the sign language interpretations of the performance (which were fun to watch themselves). I can tell you they played most if not all of You're a Woman, I'm a Machine, including Turn it Out (the opener) and Black History Month. They also tried to play Thunderstruck for 30 seconds because the people on the side reminded the singer of the music video. | | 3 | Deftones
Sadly, Deftones felt plagued by sound problems. Maybe it was my angle, but I could barely feel the low end of Stephen Carpenter's guitar early on, which is kind of the band's foundation of their entire sound. The amount of delay and reverb effects also kind of sucked in an outdoor setting. However, I did enjoy the performance as I am a moderate fan of Deftones, and it all came together really well for Passenger (although I was disappointed that they didn't take advantage of Maynard James Keenan being in town). Also they closed with the chorus of Firework by Katy Perry. Really. Setlist and video in the first comment. | | 4 | Ween
After Deftones I became one with the Boognish. My feet were killing me so I sat on the lawn and watched the screen for most of this set, which gave me great shots of Gene Ween's facial expressions as he sang. Dean Ween is also a great guitarist. About 40 minutes in they covered Let's Dance by David Bowie, which got everybody who was sitting up and moving. So I headed down and got a good view of them from the side to see the full band in action. Songs included The Mollusk, Golden Eel, Buckingham Green, My Own Bare Hands and You Fucked Up as the closer. | | 5 | Atmosphere
Slug is very fond of getting the crowd to wave various hand gestures. Scissors, fists, just waving in crazy directions, everything. He also clearly has a lot of passion for his performance and felt the love from all directions. His live band was great as well, with A.N.T. playing a killer piano solo as Slug stood behind a fake tree behind him and made faces. Definitely the chillest show of the day. Songs included Puppets, The Last to Say, Just For Show, Trying to Find a Balance and Yesterday to close. | | 6 | Eminem
A HUGE crowd made it out for Em's 90-minute career-spanning set. Eminem and his hype man had no problem getting the crowd to move and sing along, but it was slightly irritating that he only played a few songs in full. Still it was a good nightcap, although it was tough to choose between him and My Morning Jacket (who I really just wanted to see play One Big Holiday). Setlist in the first comment. | |
