Hey Mr Tambourine Man
Oft-imitated but never bettered, this is one of Dylan's more poignant tracks,
featuring the tragic story of the titular character. And it beats all of the
covers to this day. | | 9 | I Want You
One of his stronger efforts musically, I Want You features the surreal lyrics
that permeated all of the magnificent Blonde on Blonde, but featured a
surprisingly human, simple chorus to go along with them. | | 8 | Simple Twist Of Fate
Gorgeous musically, and suitably understated lyrically, this is one of Dylan's
best 'straight storytelling' efforts, as it paints a vivid picture of the twist of
fate in question. | | 7 | It Ain't Me Babe
One of his more poignant songs, this is a mellow, touching number, but the
lyrics are so economical and succinct in terms of poetically delivering their
message, that it's hard not to fall in love with it. | | 6 | It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
Best lyrics ever? Best lyrics ever. Reading like T.S Eliot's The Waste Land set
to appropriately bleak accompaniment, Dylan secures another victory over
anybody else that ever tries to write lyrics by proving that he is, pretty
much, unbeatable. That final chorus! *swoons* | | 5 | A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall
Subtly brilliant, this is my personal favourite Dylan track. Gentle both
musically and vocally, Dylan weaves together numerous different stories in
each verse that could be, and were originally designed to be, their own
song each, such is their poetry. | | 4 | Tangled Up In Blue
Sure, it's the exact same chord progression for almost six minutes, but with
lyrics this good, who really cares? A wide-ranging tale for all of America to
appreciate, this is probably the ultimate road trip song. | | 3 | Like A Rolling Stone
From that most iconic of all opening snare hits, to the enthusiastic,
slapdash harmonica solo which closes it out, this is a tour de force in
lyricism and how to write great choruses. | | 2 | Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
Joyous not only lyrically but, rarely for Dylan, incredibly appealing musically,
too. The surreal tale it tells is complemented wonderfully by the warm
guitar and bass fills, and the chorus is among his, and music's, best. | | 1 | Desolation Row
Probably the most evocative song of all time, both lyrically and musically.
The sublime lyrics weave a fairytale like story of basically every pop culture
reference in history into a vivid picture of the titular location. Nigh-on
perfect. | |
