outputting to a 32 inch samsung tv, need for blu ray playback, also some "hd" streaming, etc...
any recs? |
omnipanzer
07.27.11 | That depends Acad. Its always easier to base what you get off of a price point.
I'm showing a native resolution for that size tv at 1920x1080
the SAPPHIRE 100315L Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 gets mid 20's on fps for Crysis Warhead set at "Very High Quality" at 1920x1200 which is playable but noticeably bad.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102908
Benchmark reviewers gives it a final Score: 8.65 out of 10.
I have the identical 5850 which is better but the card also OC's really well. the 6xxx series is supposed to CrossFire better though so you could get another one in the near future.
It all depends on your wallet sir. |
omnipanzer
07.27.11 | The identical 5850 vents the heat really well and I haven't had a problem with it yet. That 6850 is $164.99 at newegg (the URL I posted) which isn't bad. Once you decide on the card you want then you can jump around to the 10 largest E-retailers and decide where you'd like to purchase. |

07.27.11 | yeah the gt220 is what i have now. i think there's a hardware issue (there always has been, since i got the damn thing in 09) |
omnipanzer
07.27.11 | Here is the 6870 version for only $10 more and there is a $20 rebate on it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948
Yes it is worth it if you are running a GT220. Look at the texture and pixel fill rate differances:

You need to make sure your PSU can handle a better graphics card. |
omnipanzer
07.27.11 | My wife is running hers with AMD 64x2, 2xHDD 6xcase fans, 4x RAM sticks, and a singular Optical drive with a 350w power supply. It is supposed to be a 500w PSU but the math really shows it being 350w. I wouldn't attempt it with anything lower than that and higher if at a ll possible. |
Gmork89
07.27.11 | I'm building one right now as well man, it's pretty much strictly for gaming though. If you get a core i7 processor the integrated graphics are pretty good just by itself. |
omnipanzer
07.27.11 | also:
that 5850 only needs one 6-pin pcie power plug but the 5870 needs 2 so the 5850 probably has a significantly lower power draw under load. |
omnipanzer
07.27.11 | Gmork89: The i7 and the i5 are relatively on par for gaming. under heavy processing the i7 will out shine the i5 though. If gaming is your real purpose save yourself $100 and just get the i5. |
omnipanzer
07.27.11 | ^ and the i5 has the identical integrated graphics core. HD3000 and it isn't good for anything more than multimedia. ;^) |

07.27.11 | Is it a brand name PSU Acad? Does it have a model number I can look up? |
omnipanzer
07.27.11 | As long as it isn't to bad of a model you should be fine but you are probably pushing it with the 5870. I would stick with the 5850 unless you want to get a new PSU too. If you're PSU is extremely cheap then it may not even push that but going under the assumption that it isn't lying to you too much it'll probably be fine. |
Gmork89
07.27.11 | @Omnipanzer. I wasn't aware the i7 had the same integrated graphics, I assumed it would be a little better. I personally am getting an i5 2500k with a 560 ti, so I should be set I think. Thanks for pointing out my error. |

07.27.11 | I SAID RIGHT NOW |
omnipanzer
07.27.11 | Gmork89: np bro, the i3 has the HD2000 but the i5 and i7 are the same. If you get an H67 mobo it'll let you use the graphics core but not a secondary Graphics card. If you get a P67 mobo you can use a secondary graphics card but give up the on board intel graphics core for lent. if you get the Z68 chipset it will let you use both but at a minor cost. You'll want to hit up a forum or two to decide. I'm going with the Z68 so I can encode videos in a much reduced time frame.
"I SAID RIGHT NOW"
Lol, I don't know it Brandon. Everyone finds me with my email. email me yours and I'll add you when I actually get my PC up and running. |

omnipanzer
07.27.11 | Gmork89: basically you want to stay away from the H67 chipset if you are going for gaming. either of the others (P67 or Z68) will get you what you want combined with a second party graphics card. |
Gmork89
07.27.11 | Right on, thanks for the info, I might be bugging for advice now for a little bit while I build this computer. I got a p67 mobo already, now I just need the monitor/processor/video card. I saved the most expensive pieces for last haha. |

07.27.11 | This would probably do you right at $35:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4465483&csid=ITD&body=MAIN
This one is pretty nice at $40:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371033
5/5 from 118 people. Will only has pcie connector for a Graphics card and even if it doesn't push a full 500w it will give you some head room (again I'm assuming you are on a budget).
Do yourself a favor and look up how to calculate what the actual output on that unit is. You just need the listed voltages off the side to figure it out and it won't cost you anything to do it. If you are unable to do it or the PSU won't work for what you need then add that to your new upgrade budget. |

07.27.11 | NP Gmork89: I just boned up for this build so it's no biggie. |
