07.20.11 | list is boris |
Trebor.
07.20.11 | I just used Mediafire today |
iarescientists
07.20.11 | can't imagine that it does
there's not really any way to track what you're downloading from mediafire like there is with p2p. |
acorncheese
07.20.11 | uh oh urinetrouble ROFL ROFL ROFL ROFL!!!!!!! |
Trebor.
07.20.11 | They're going to get sued up the ass for this |
Adabelle
07.20.11 | They'll do this for 6 months, realise they're losing far more money in lawsuits and give up quietly. |
Willie
07.20.11 | What does the article say? My phone refuses to copy the link. |
eternium
07.20.11 | Just don't download anything from RCAA. |
toxin.
07.20.11 | Wow, those bastards.
@Willie it just says that your ISP will track your activity and send you warnings and possibly lock your internet (after a a series of warnings) if you download tv shows/ movies illegally. There's no reference to music though. |
Willie
07.20.11 | At thus point, Spotify is the best option for people that just listen to Top 40 albums that labels sue over. |
Willie
07.20.11 | @xtoxin: thanks for that. yeah I read an article a few weeks back about that. There's some shady shit behind the ISPs' decision. |
Satellite
07.20.11 | i've already had that happen, xtonin
warner brothers had my isp shut down my internet for downloading inception |
toxin.
07.20.11 | Are you serious? lol I have AT&T so maybe I've just been lucky? I generally avoid downloading online anyways. And no problem Willie.
I could see Adabelle's prediction coming true though |
eternium
07.20.11 | You can rent movies for a dollar nowadays, I see no point in downloading them and taking that risk. |
Satellite
07.20.11 | yeah i stay away from downloading movies now |
Willie
07.20.11 | That prediction won't come true. You have to remember that a lot of these ISPs are also content providers. They bundle Internet with cable and the harder they make it for you to DL movies and TV shows the more likely you are to use their pay-per-view. It's also one if the biggest reasons they're implementing data caps -- so that you can't cancel your cable in favor of s Netflix/Hulu style streaming option. |
eternium
07.20.11 | Willie understands how these greedy bastards work. |
Sanders
07.20.11 | But does this mean that Mediafire is the "safer" option then when it comes to downloading stuff? |
mvp
07.20.11 | i use mediafire errday |
mvp
07.20.11 | shieet |
ziroth
07.20.11 | yeah i really don't see how they can get you for Mediafire/Rapidshare/etc like iarescientists said. just stay away from torrents and such if you get a warning. |
toxin.
07.20.11 | Well that sucks. I didn't even know that they even had data caps, but that probably means I'm not close to exceeding it.
It does raise the question why it took them so long to implement this though. You'd think they'd have tried to stop copyright violations like 5 years ago at least. |
Acanthus
07.20.11 | Old news really, select ISP providers already did this in my area before. I'd be more worried about bandwidth limits. |
Trebor.
07.20.11 | Because it's illegal
|
Willie
07.20.11 | Nothing is safe. The ISP are monitoring all data transfer through their servers so the site won't matter. It will be harder for them to monitor if you DL files that are zipped/compressed that don't use a specific file name (like a movie title or album title -- those are dead giveaways). They're also monitoring file types, so eventually any avi/mov/mp4 download not through an approved site will raise flags. |
Trebor.
07.20.11 | Goddamn Patriot Act |
eternium
07.20.11 | Patriot Act has nothing to do with this because it's the companies that are monitoring what you are doing, not the government. |
Acanthus
07.20.11 | ISP's are just getting hungry for money is all |
mvp
07.20.11 | get caught by government: throw away laptop ;l |
Acanthus
07.20.11 | Use neighbors free, unprotected wifi - or go through Tor. |
Sanders
07.20.11 | Hmmm, sounds like it's a shit time coming in the States, wonder how long it'll be before it gets that bad in the UK? I've not experienced anything as stringent here yet, but I guess it won't be too long before it occurs. |
Acanthus
07.20.11 | There will almost always be ways to get around it, I don't think it's something to worry about right away (or at least not to panic about). |
paxman
07.20.11 | Happened to me a few years ago when I downloaded Gran Torino. My internet was off and I called the company. They said to delete Gran Torino to get it back on. Was totally surprised. |
OneMoreRoland
07.20.11 | I'm on Insight Cable so I'm good. Woo! |
foreverendeared
07.20.11 | I'm on Insight too, don't think that makes you safe. I've already received a couple warnings from them in the past.
I just downloaded season 2 of Community so I hope I'm not fucked. |
Powerban
07.20.11 | Use Peerblock guys. It works like adblock plus does in Firefox and Chrome, but instead of blocking advertisements, you can choose to block all connections to certain sources. (i.e warner bros)
Which means there are frequently updated lists to keep away all of the movie/music industry. You can even block out entire countries. So if you're a racist, this will also make you happy! |
foreverendeared
07.21.11 | I use peerblock, but the problem is, companies use dummy ISBs to track what you're doing, so peerblock might see what looks like a harmless ISM and let it through, when really it's a tracker from WB, etc. Basically, if the company wants to see your activity, they can still do it pretty easily if they want to. |
someguest
07.21.11 | I use verizon wireless internet and they don't give a fuck. |
Powerban
07.21.11 | Yeah I know that actually, which is why if you want to even take a step further you can use Hotspot Shield. You're running through a different ISP altogether. But if they really want to get you, they will.
Basically, I use Hotspot Shield, Peerblock (not always), Adblock Plus, Illumitux and Cacaoweb. Those last two are just for unlimited streaming on sites like Megavideo which have that retarded 72 min limit.
If you are really worried about downloading movies, just stream them online. It's actually a technicality in the legal system where only the person hosting it can be reprimanded. There are a few good ones out there. |
Powerban
07.21.11 | By good ones, I mean websites for movies. |
Urinetrouble
07.21.11 | So you're basically saying mediafire isn't safe to use unless I get tor or something? |
foreverendeared
07.21.11 | Illumitux and Cacaoweb don't work for me, they just buffer indefinitely. |
Willie
07.21.11 | With this new resolution nothing is really safe because everything passes through the ISP before coming to you. Like I said before, despite what some may think, most of the internet providers do have financial incentive to keep you from illegal downloads and even legal downloads/streaming. |
Urinetrouble
07.21.11 | Fuck I'm gonna download tor then. I hear it works really well |
Acanthus
07.21.11 | I wonder if this will inspire people to set up their own underground ISP's? Just a cool thought. |
foreverendeared
07.21.11 | Yeah, but you're still fine as long as you don't go banana nuts on the downloading. There are too many big fish to fry out there (people downloading several mainstream movies and albums a day) for them to be worried about someone d/l a few obscure albums a week. |
eternium
07.21.11 | Unless you download movies and top 40 music then you have nothing to worry about.. Boris certainly isn't going to sue you for downloading Smile. |
Urinetrouble
07.21.11 | I don't download movies anymore ever since I found stagevu but they don't some of the newer stuff for streaming. Where can I stream movies like stagevu? Also, I'm guessing downloading comics isn't a major concern? |
foreverendeared
07.21.11 | Exactly. Tv shows are kind of hit or miss though. I love d/l tv shows, but it's really only safe to d/l those when they've been off the air for a while and they aren't on a network channel. |
Maniac!
07.21.11 | I only steal from poor artists, so I'm ok. |
Acanthus
07.21.11 | I steal indiscriminately, and share my loot as well. Looks like the days of seeding are going to be few this year. |
Maniac!
07.21.11 | Who torrents anyway? I only mediafire a few times a month. No need to go batshit |
Acanthus
07.21.11 | Oh I torrent, HD anime/HBO shows are amazingly addicting. |
Knott-
07.21.11 | There were rumbles about this kind of thing in the UK a while back but a storm got kicked up and politicians dilly-dallied and I don't think anything got agreed. I might be wrong though. |
someguest
07.21.11 | "I only steal from poor artists, so I'm ok."
haha, thank you for that. |
foreverendeared
07.21.11 | i mean torrent for movies and tv shows |
Maniac!
07.21.11 | Never torrented movies or shows and probably won't start |
Acanthus
07.21.11 | Eh it's not worth your time if you've been ok thus far. I was scared that I wouldn't have internet so I went on a spree of shows so my summer would be ok still. |
Maniac!
07.21.11 | I feel no need to torrent anything, I just like to keep up with albums once in a while. |
Acanthus
07.21.11 | I've not downloaded anything substantial in a month or two, nothing's really came out music wise to grab my attention. |
Powerban
07.21.11 | stream movies here: http://www.letmewatchthis.ch/ you can't get in trouble for using it.
i suggest using the Putlocker or Sockshare links over others. |
iFghtffyrdmns
07.21.11 | this doesn't seem like big news for music downloading at all, at least not yet.
don't think City of Caterpillar is gonna care too much that you're pirating their shit. |
Obfuscation24
07.21.11 | interesting.. |
Acanthus
07.21.11 | For my films I use solarmovie.eu - it's not wonderful all the time but it's reliable. |
Willie
07.21.11 | netflix + handbrake + VLC is a good combo for movies/TV shows. Plus you can decide your own file size, type and picture/sound quality. |
