My Top 10 Favourite Ambient Albums

Hey guys,rFor my first list, I figured I'd do my top 10 favourite ambient albums, in no particular order.rEnjoy
1Kettel
Myam James - Part 2

I love all of Kettel's music, but this album was the one that I first heard. I
immediately fell in love with the beautiful hybrid of contemporary classical
and ambient electronica. Gorgeous.
2Aphex Twin
Selected Ambient Works 85-92

This album is my all-time favourite release by Richard D. James. Xtal is
probably my favourite album opener and maybe even my favourite song,
ever. I love the whole ambient-techno genre throughout, and I can safely
say that I haven't heard anything even close to competing with this album
since.
3Fuck Buttons
Street Horrrsing

I've often thought of Tarot Sport as my favourite Fuck Buttons album, but
this is probably because I found it refreshingly accessible when it first came
out in comparison to their d?but since at the time, I wasn't a fan of noise.
However, now that my taste has developed further I appreciate the noisy
ambience of Street Horrrsing an awful lot. There's something strangely
euphoric about the harsh synths clashing against the scratchy vocals.
4 Gang Gang Dance
God's Money

I haven't been too fussed about most of Gang Gang Dance's music, yet I
find something very special in their often least critically acclaimed 2005
album. I especially love Egowar - that has got to be one of the most chilling
songs I have ever heard.
5Aphex Twin
Selected Ambient Works, Vol. II

Another one of my favourite Aphex albums. Although I'm not quite as keen
on the darker sounds, the softness of 'Rhubarb', 'Lichen', 'Stone in Focus'
and the many other similar drones just relax me to the core. 'Rhubarb' has
got to be one of my most played songs of all time. I went through a period
of listening to the 7 minutes and 44 seconds of heaven at least once every
day after school, really wound me down.
6 Oneohtrix Point Never
Memory Vague

Oneohtrix's released confuse me - I never know which releases are LPs,
compilations, remixes or what. Either way, 'Memory Vague' was my first
exposure to the man who is now one of my biggest musical influences. The
second I heard the layered drones of Zones Without People I knew I was in
love with this man. I think it's impossible not to make quality ambient music
with a Juno-6 in your synth arsenal.
7 Moby
Go ? The Very Best of Moby

I have adored Moby's music spanning his entire career, but I have felt that
every album has contained gems scattered with other not so good (but still
amazing) tunes. The recent Greatest Hits album seems to contain all of my
favourites, so that's my favourite release by him. Certain tunes such as
'Porcelain' and 'Natural Blues' send me back to my childhood when my Dad
would play his albums on repeat in the summer with the french doors open
and a barbeque sizzling...
8Stars of The Lid
and Their Refinement of the decline

I'd never heard drone with orchestral instruments until this album, and it
made me appreciate the genre so much more, making me realize that any
timbre can be used in drone and still make beautiful sounds. Althought I
cannot put a name to any of the songs as they all merge into one big drone
to me, this will always be one of the most relaxing albums for me.
9Isao Tomita
Snowflakes are Dancing

I heard about Isao Tomita when I was researching Richard D. James a bit
more - the Japanese synthesist's name was mentioned when asked what
his influences were. Wondering what could be so wonderful to inspire
James' masterpieces, I immediately listened to 'Arabesque No. 1'. That song
remains to stick out so much to me - I used to fall asleep to the Debussy
tribute album every night, and I would wait in anticipation for that fifth track
to come on. I never would manage to hear that sixth song...
10Radiohead
Kid A

Radiohead are another band I grew up with, their music being forced upon
me by my dad's brainwashing technique to make me have an educated
music taste. This is another album that is incredibly nostalgic to me. I love
all of their work, both their early rock tunes and their more recent
experimental work. But Kid A found the perfect balance. This one is another
album to fall asleep to.
