A Summer Playlist Of Tuneful Alterna-pop and other genres

Fugazi and Sonic Youth will probably NOT feature
1The Flaming Lips
Clouds Taste Metallic

Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, yada yada yada .....THIS is for me, the Lips' peak.
Quirky, guitar heavy, and absolutely packed with tunes and hooks
throughout. Coyne perfects his blend of happy-sad melancholy here also.
2Blackalicious
Blazing Arrow

Stretching 'pop' a bit here, but who cares when it's this joyful - lush,
sampledelic backings showcasing Gift of Gab's lithe, witty rhymes. Gil-Scott
Heron also turns up, which is always a bonus.
3Cosmic Rough Riders
Enjoy The Melodic Sunshine

So obscure I had to add it to the database just for this list, bafflingly
unheralded throwback pop from the only hippies in Glasgow. Honestly,
some of the best pop songwriting I've ever heard, blissful melodies
combined with exotic instrumentation. I can't recommend this highly
enough.
4Funkadelic
The Electric Spanking Of War Babies

Yeah, I know 'One Nation...' Is the one everyone likes, but their final proper
album is so much fun, reggae experiments and all, that it's always more of
an engaging listen for me.
5Girls
Album

This album positively REEKS of summer. If you ignore the fact the guy spent
most of his life in a quasi-christian cult....
6Jeremy Messersmith
The Reluctant Graveyard

Irresistibly bouncy and superbly written baroque-ish pop from another
sadly unheralded artist.
7 Kurt Vile
Square Shells EP

An EP, granted, but 27 minutes of lazy, atmospheric acoustic jams,
delivered with the perfect amount of nonchalance grants it a place on THE
LIST.
8Stevie Wonder
Innervisions

The obligatory classic. It's so good that I couldn't leave it out, if only for the
sexual bassline on 'Too High'
9Pavement
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

Yeah, this was on my other list. But it might just be the perfect summer
album - especially 'Range Life'. Hence, I'd feel guilty if I left it out.
10 Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
I See A Darkness

Only Joking!
Great album though.....
