| 2011 Albums You Should Be Listening To
There's a ton of 2011 albums lists on this site already, I know, but here are some records you may not be familiar with or may have forgotten.rFeel free to let me know what I'm missing. And RIYL = Recommended If You Like. | 1 | | Telebossa Telebossa
Found out about this on Tinymixtapes and fell in love. Bossa nova + electronics, but way better than that sounds.
RIYL: jazz, interesting music | 2 | | Shabazz Palaces Black Up
This comes out tomorrow and might blow up so this might not count as a slept-on release. Check out my review for more info on this fine piece of work.
RIYL: abstract hip-hop | 3 | | La Sera La Sera
This is like, if Best Coast was really really good. I might prefer this over every Vivian Girls release.
RIYL: Vivian Girls, Beach Boys | 4 | | Big K.R.I.T Returnof4eva
Lyrically, this may be the best rap album of 2011 so far. Not to understate the awesome beats either. "Country Shit (Remix)" is a total banger, Chamillionnaire (yes, "tryna catch me ridin dirty" Chamillionnaire) kills it on "Time Machine", and K.R.I.T gets surprisingly emotionally affecting on "The Vent". All this and more... the best part is that it's free!
RIYL: OutKast, good rap | 5 | | Comet Gain Howl of the Lonely Crowd
Comet Gain are under-appreciated as hell. The 15+ year old indie-pop band from the UK released what is perhaps their best album yet and they're not even on Sputnik. Listen to the first track and then tell me this doesn't deserve more recognition.
RIYL: Belle & Sebastian, Arab Strap, indie pop | 6 | | Roommate Guilty Rainbow
Roommate are one of the most awesome bands out there and Guilty Rainbow is a killer LP, front-to-back. Plus it ends with a Guided By Voices cover! How sweet.
RIYL: really good indie rock | 7 | | Deaf Center Owl Splinters
Probably the best ambient album I've heard so far this year. Hauntingly beautiful and still very easy to listen to.
RIYL: Stars of the Lid, ambient | 8 | | Woods Sun and Shade
The two long tracks are kinda boring but other than that this is one of the best indie albums I've heard this year. Very talented band, and an excellent album cover!
RIYL: Ganglians, Sufjan Stevens | 9 | | Junior Boys It's All True
The Boys are back in town! Have you heard about the good reception of this album? It's all true.
RIYL: Cut Copy (but more chill), synthpop | 10 | | Thao & Mirah Thao & Mirah
Two awesome people make an awesome album. Especially good if you're looking for something similar to W H O K I L L.
RIYL: tUnE-yArDs | 11 | | Thee Oh Sees Castlemania
Honestly I haven't listened to this yet. But judging by how goddamn cool Thee Oh Sees are and this album cover, plus the review(s) I've read, this *has* to be awesome.
RIYL: Sic Alps, lo-fi stupid rock shit | 12 | | Times New Viking Dancer Equired
Speaking of lo-fi stupid rock shit: the new TNV album! It's awesome. Check out "Fuck Her Tears" for a sample.
RIYL: shitty production, lo-fi-punk-pop-scuzz-rock | 13 | | The Psychic Paramount II
Whoa, dude! The latest boner-inducing instrumental rockin jam prog selections from The Psychic Paramount.
RIYL: post-prog, instrumental rock | 14 | | Grouper A I A
Beautiful, huge, engrossing. And better than Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill.
RIYL: transient ambient noise guitar pop [with announcements] | 15 | | Curren$y Covert Coup
Curren$y just makes it seem so effortless. He delivers on every track and the beats are delicious. Also, Freddie Gibbs kills his guest spot. And again: free!
RIYL: good rap, weed rap, weed | 16 | | E-40 Revenue Retrievin': Overtime Shift & Graveyard Shift
40 tracks. No skits. Only a few duds. This is just a really, really impressive collection of southern rap and "In the Morning" is definitely one of my songs of the year.
RIYL: Devin the Dude, hot bangers, sinister mob shit | 17 | | Peaking Lights 936
Wow, if this album isn't chill. "Tiger Eyes (Laid Back)" is the jam.
RIYL: Washed Out, hipster shit | 18 | | Faust Something Dirty
Whoa, it's Faust! Whoa, it's awesome!
RIYL: Faust, heavy rocks, dirt | 19 | | Akron/Family S/T 2: Shinju cosmic bullshit title
Perhaps more people would have remembered this if the title weren't so long. A great album though, definitely overlooked.
RIYL: freaky folky, electric guitars in the woods, magic | 20 | | Chemtrail Youth Obsessed Death Culture
Post-rock that's better than the new Explosions album.
RIYL: Explosions in the Sky, post-rock, rock | 21 | | Dead Rider The Raw Dents
Aw man, I should probably just write a review of this. This album is so cool.
RIYL: Jesus Lizard | 22 | | Hauschka Salon des Amateurs
Hey guys, there's a new Hauschka album out! And it's really good!
RIYL: cool instrumental stuff, piano, movement | 23 | | Psychedelic Horseshit Laced
Lol, this is too good.
RIYL: psychadelics, horseshit-production, magic | 24 | | 13 & God Own Your Ghost
The best thing anticon has done so far this year. Good stuff.
RIYL: Why?, Subtle, ghosts | 25 | | Tyler, the Creator Goblin
lol jk. | |
