Sounds Of A Playground Fading

Ranking the new In Flames album. With the exception of rrCome Clarity, rit's their best album since Clayman. Still ronly in the 3-3.5 rrange, but rthere are a few fucking rgreat songs.
1In Flames
A New Dawn

Might be overhyping but this is my favorite In Flames song since "Only For the
Weak" was released over 10 years ago. In fact, this is probably one of my top
10 In Flames songs ever. The intro is a throwback to the days of Colony, albeit
with a modernized flair. Anders is actually utilizing harsher vocals for a good
portion of the song and it sounds very good by his recent standards. There's also
a significant, presence of a synthetic string section, which punctuates the
chorus without becoming overly obnoxious or distasteful. They really nailed it with this one. 10/10
2Where the Dead Ships Dwell

Does a superb job of mixing those electronic elements In Flames have been
toying with for the past 10 years or so with an easier to digest alternative metal
package. Anders' clean vocals are at their best on the song's chorus, which is
easily among the best In Flames have written in quite some time. This would be
a logical choice for a single. 9.25/10
3All For Me

Begins with a refreshing acoustic riff which is quite reminiscent of Whoracle. In
fact, a lot of the riffs on this song remind me of the churning mid-tempo riffs
found from that era. It's a very interesting song in the context of the rest of the
album, and the exposed portion at the end with Anders' clean vocals has a bit of
charm in its obvious imperfection. 9.2234235/10
4Liberation

I wasn't sure how much I liked this one at first. It's probably the poppiest song
In Flames have ever done and it's absolutely dripping with cheese. However, it
has really grown on me, and is remarkably uplifting. A ballsy song to end the
album with, but it's begun to make sense to me. 9/10
5The Puzzle

One of the album's heavier cuts. Wholly satisfying throughout. 8.5/10
6Sound of a Playground Fading

Mixed feelings on this one. The subdued intro into the harmonic guitar leads is
absolutely sublime. After about a minute of this though, they transition into one
of, if not the worst and most horribly generic riff on the album. It's a complete
buzzkill. Luckily, the chorus is one of the best on the album, and if the godawful
transition to the verse is ignored, the song is actually quite good. 7.9/10
7The Attic

A soft song throughout, with some interesting guitar playing reminiscent of
their older albums. The lyrics are a bit odd, but portray some interesting
imagery. A pleasant surprise on the album. 7.9/10
8Fear is the Weakness

A solid song which is dragged down a bit by the lyrics, which might as well have
been written by Chester Bennington. The synths are a nice touch in this song
though, actually reminds me a bit of the band Mercenary. 7.5/10
9Ropes

This is basically a Skyfire song with Anders on vocals. Doesn't really sound like
anything else they've done but it's not exactly what I'd call original or
innovative. 7.5/10
10Darker Times

Doesn't really do anything to stand out from the rest of the songs but I enjoy it
whenever it comes on. Wouldn't skip it. 7/10
11Enter Tragedy

These next four songs are all about equal. They're all solid but don't offer
anything particularly interesting. 7/10
12Deliver Us

I wouldn't go so far to say it's a bad song (it's definitely better than the worst
songs on ASOP and STYE) it's just that it sounds very safe and uninteresting.
The chorus is moderately catchy though. 6.5/10
13Jester's Door

Spoken-word and "dubsteb." Yeah. 5/10
