Why '91 Was The Pinnacle Of Death Metal

22 of the best albums death metal has to offer. And all in 1991. Too bad I was only a year old for this....
1Amorphis
Privilege of Evil

The first ever release from the Finnish band. A great piece of raw, underground death.
2At the Gates
Gardens of Grief

Another first ever release, and equally raw. With tracks like 'City of Screaming Statues' and 'All Life Ends,' this EP is love at first listen.
3Atheist
Unquestionable Presence

Easily Atheist's greatest release, and one of the top death metal albums of all time. As close to perfection as you can get.
4Benediction
The Grand Leveller

Benediction's best effort. Just a supreme piece of metal.
5Bolt Thrower
War Master

A great piece from one of the most consistent bands out there. Not their best, but still great.
6Cancer
Death Shall Rise

Cancer's slightly more refined sophomore effort, and just as good as their first.
7 Dark Tranquillity
Trail of Life Decayed

Dark Tranquillity's obscure opening EP. It's not even here on sputnik. Its a great piece, definitely worth a listen. Pick it up.
8Darkthrone
Soulside Journey

Darkthrone's one and only death metal release before permanently switching to black. Its actually quite good.
9Death
Human

The first in Death's technical, progressive foursome. Though the other three are all better, this is still a great album.
10Dismember
Like an Everflowing Stream

The Swedish band's debut album, and also one of the greatest pieces of all time.
11Entombed
Clandestine

Sure it's no Left Hand Path, but its still excellent.
12Gorguts
Considered Dead

The debut album from the fantastic Canadian technical death group.
13Grave
Into the Grave

Just another great debut from another great Swedish band...
14Immolation
Dawn of Possession

The first, and by far least technical release from one of the most consistently great bands that the U.S. ever produced. An excellent album.
15Massacra
Enjoy the Violence

The fantastic second, and final, album from the far too short lived French death/thrash hybrids.
16Morbid Angel
Blessed are the Sick

Arguably the best release from arguably the best death metal band to have ever performed. Too bad they didn't stop after Covenant, though.
17Morgoth
Cursed

The excellent second release from the German death band that went on to form the more popular Fleshcrawl.
18Sepultura
Arise

The fourth album from the Brazilian originator of death metal (one of). Good, but doesn't nearly match Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation, which is vastly underrated here on sputnik.
19Suffocation
Human Waste

The fantastic EP preceding Effigy...
20Suffocation
Effigy of the Forgotten

...which was also released in '91. One of the top ten albums under the branches of death metal. From the first few blasts to the final rumble, this album is relentless and unforgiving.
21 Therion
...Of Darkness

The excellent full death debut from the Swedish founders of symphonic metal. They only went up from here.
22Unleashed
Where No Life Dwells

Another debut from another Swedish death band. And just as with the others, its excellent. What a surprise.
