05.25.11 | Give the album a listen whenever, and totally forget the world around you.
And if it keeps doing that after more than 20 spins, it gets a 5. |
Voivod
05.25.11 | excellent replay value. |
Loanshark
05.25.11 | Every song must be very good. That's it for me.
Or I give a 5 as a joke. |

Well then how can you call Old Raves End a 5 already? |
omnipanzer
05.25.11 | Albums I can enjoy listening to at any moment even years later. I could be wrong but I don't think I have more than a couple of 5 from this decade. |

Haha, well admittedly that was the exception even though I did hold off reviewing that immediately. I had that for just under 2 months before I posted the review |
omnipanzer
05.25.11 | I'm kind of glad he called you on it because I've never heard of it. It is now on my "To Get" list. Also I retrieved those Devin Townsend albums you rec'd and look forward to giving them a spin this evening or tomorrow. |

05.25.11 | "Ah good, sorry for the late reply on that btw. I hardly have any need to go onto last fm so...."
Nah, don't be I expected as much. I figured if I messaged it here it would be out of context and it's not like I'm limited on time to get the rec. ;^) |
kanker
05.25.11 | "Haha, well admittedly that was the exception even though I did hold off reviewing that immediately. I had that for just under 2 months before I posted the review"
lol it's ok, at least you got some kind of criteria...
I've seen myself 5'ing too many albums after a handful of days of listening, only to lower the score a few months later.
I know i'm part of the problem here... |
dnor
05.25.11 | my personal policy is that I may rate an album after one or two spins, but I'll never instantly five it. I might 4.5 it, and in the passing months, it may lower, stay the same....but for a few, they will jump to a 5. |
omnipanzer
05.25.11 | I can't say I won't ever do it but a 5 really needs to sink in... when I was in my late teens and early twenties I would have instantly 5 shit that had no right to ever be 5'd.
Tool - Undertow would be a perfect example. |
dnor
05.25.11 | I had a Coheed and Cambria album 5'd omni...we all make mistakes :p |
omnipanzer
05.25.11 | Well, I feel sooooo much better now. Thanks D ;^) |
dnor
05.25.11 | granted, the Coheed album I had 5'd is good, and I just moved it down from a 5 to a 4.5, but still...point remains the same. |
BloodSweatandBeers
05.25.11 | If it gives me shivers to the point that my nips harden it's a 5. |
omnipanzer
05.25.11 | I can't bring myself to give them a chance. Based on the explanations of them that I have received they just sound so dorky/dumb. |
BloodSweatandBeers
05.25.11 | they are |
Underflow
05.25.11 | 1.) The quality of music must be very consistent throughout. In otherwords, an album such as Goblin might have many amazing tracks (Tron Cat, Steak Sauce, Yonkers, Transylvania), but the whole experience is marred by numerous poor songs (Radicals).
2.) The music has to resonate with me on a deep level. Albums such as "In Absentia," "Blood on the Tracks," and "Animals" are ingrained into my mind. The music becomes a part of you, I guess.
I don't think that the "it must stand the test of time" mantra is an effective way to determine whether something is classic. You can grow tired of anything, no matter how good it is, if you hear it too much. In that sense nothing can stand the test of time, and therefore nothing can be a classic. |
omnipanzer
05.25.11 | it must stand the test of time is pretty much the definition of "Classic" for me. |
MO
05.25.11 | ^ pretty much |
Emim
05.25.11 | I have to like it more than a 4.5
Classic is something that is entirely removed from a numerical ranking system. |
ilikeforests
05.25.11 | I don't really have criteria. The most I'll do is consider how original it is, but even then it won't stop be from 5'ing something I feel should be. |

05.25.11 | "it must stand the test of time is pretty much the definition of "Classic" for me."

05.25.11 | "it must stand the test of time is pretty much the definition of "Classic" for me."
That's a pretty good answer.
But how much time ?? days, months or years??
And if that's the case why so many users give 5's to an album just a few days after its release?? |

05.25.11 | If every single song on the album is awesome, 5/5; it's that simple. I don't give a shit about that "classic" status blah blah blah. And if the album starts to get stale sounding, rating goes down. |
Fuff24
05.25.11 | eww van halen |
pedroia55
05.25.11 | For me it has to be a pretty good album |
XfingTheSullen
05.25.11 | It must contain no weak songs, all of them must be perfectly written and enjoyable even years after the album's been released. For me a great example is Scar Symmetry's Pitch Black Progress. IMO it contains no single song that lacks anything at all, so lately I cranked it up from 4,5 to 5. |
rockandmetaljunkie
05.25.11 | And if the album starts to get stale sounding, rating goes down.
So that's your method...
How many times have you applied this tactic?? |
brandnewAAAA
05.25.11 | I use the 5 star system for every song on said album, if the average is over 4.75 then i 5 it, that simple. |
rockandmetaljunkie
05.25.11 | For me it has to be a pretty good album??
Which means?? |
bloc
05.25.11 | This also ties in with the fact that after the first listen of the album (and I like it), I'll throw it on shuffle with the rest of my library, so the chance that I actually hear the full album ever again is very low.
Therefore, this tactic is not applied very often only because I'll hear a song from the album so rarely that it always sounds fresh to me. |
Psychopathologist
05.25.11 | some albums arent meant to be put on shuffle |
bloc
05.25.11 | I was just generalizing before, but I definitely agree with you Psycho.
But tbh, I've always been more of a song based kind of listener, as opposed to an album based listener. |
rockandmetaljunkie
05.25.11 | some albums arent meant to be put on shuffle
+1 |
DarkNoctus
05.25.11 | 5/5's have to be timeless, never really get old, have something really special about them that can't be found to the same extent in other albums. not necessarily flawless, but flaws you can glance over with no problem at all. :] |
Spec
05.25.11 | Is it BTBAM?
Is it Opeth?
Is it Defeater?
Is it Converge?
Is it Deftones?
If not, it's not a five. |
NigelH
05.25.11 | Excellent replay value, not a bad song on the thing, and a superb album flow as opposed to a mish-mash of good tunes. Also, some personal connection/relatability to the music helps. |
rockandmetaljunkie
05.25.11 | bloc i believe that if you want to be objective in your ratings you have to listen the album as many times as you can within 24 hours, you learn each song by heart and then you listen it again after a few days, or weeks. If the album still provokes the same emotions you rate it.That's my approach. |
rockandmetaljunkie
05.25.11 | Does anyone count the duration??
I mean if the album is quite long and boring?? |
bloc
05.25.11 | I can understand that. But you and I are very different listeners haha. |

It can be fucking awesome during the 1st listen.
But after that... |
TheFonz123
05.25.11 | It has to be perfect. Then i give it a 5/5 |
YetAnotherBrick
05.25.11 | The music/lyrics have to be damn near, or actually flawless, and it also has to have that staying power/classic "edge" those classic, legendary albums all have. |
kangaroopoo
05.25.11 | Incredibly consistent, addictive and emotive after countless spins. |
aok
05.25.11 | for me, 5s absolutely drop me to the ground when i first hear them (or they first click). then in a few months it still floors me.
and i know that in a few years it will still floor me. so far, i've known an album was a 5 on first listen exactly 1 time |
Hocmat
05.25.11 | It has to make me cum |
Ire
05.25.11 | Criteria For A 5 Rating?
has to start with "gold" and end with "cobra" |
demigod!
05.25.11 | it has to flow super good. like if i'm listening to an album that's over an hour long but feels like it's really short, it'll largely influence whether or not i 5 it
for example: lonesome crowded west
goes by so fast |
wyankeif1337
05.25.11 | must be called "Jane Doe" |
Crymsonblaze
05.26.11 | If every song is good to great, and the whole album is infinitely replayable. Usually the album connects in a vague undefinable way, but not always |
luschlotz
07.16.11 | OASIS INNOVATIVE HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LOL
a 5/5 has to:
-Time Test
-Unique
-You want to hear it
-After you hear it, you have no problem in putting the first track again.
-No urge to skip tracks
The album being revolutionary helps a lot, but it is not a requirment to get a 5
