Crysis 05.23.11	As Huston Smith said, the history of Buddhism begins with a man. Basically there was a guy named Siddhartha Gautama, otherwise known as Buddha, who was the son of a rich guy. His father was told by an astrologist that Buddha would either become a great king or forsake the material world to become a holy man. Guess which one happened. In lieu of this prophecy, his father made sure he was shielded from the realities of life, but eventually he got to learn of old age, death, disease, etc. and said see ya later to his rich life and became a holy man. When he left, he went to learn from the great Hindu Yogis of the day, and eventually learned all they could teach but did not feel as if he was fully enlightened. He sat under a fig tree and vowed not to move until he reached enlightenment, which he did. He subsequently gathered followers and died after eating contaminated meat. That's basically the history in a nutshell. The teachings are more complicated, and to be honest are very appealing as far as religions go.

BallsToTheWall 05.23.11	I took an eastern philosophy class in college last year, learned about the dalai lamas, Buddhism and other shit. It was a very interesting and influential course. We had to mediate for the last10 minutes every class. It's still fucked up what China did to Tibet though.
