05.18.11 | Radiohead is an English alternative rock band. |
MarvellousG
05.18.11 | Try some Scott Walker, based on your list. 'The Drift' is a terrifying, intimidating but perfect place to start. |

who are incredibly overrated |
omnipanzer
05.18.11 | just ignore it and you'll be fine. |
MarvellousG
05.18.11 | They're not overrated, but I can see how someone couldn't get the appeal. Hell, I completely didn't until a few months ago, when my first proper listen of Kid A made me love them. |
TheArkitecht
05.18.11 | @MarvellousG I'll give it a shot, thanks. I've tried listening to Ok Computer and Kid A plenty of times, giving it my full attention but it just does nothing for me lol. I'll probably try again at a later time and maybe something will click. |
MarvellousG
05.18.11 | Fair enough. OK Computer was the one people consistently recommended to me and I still don't really rate it, although Kid A did sway me. I'd recommend In Rainbows though, that's a fantastic choice to get into them. All of the others required loads of listens for me to like them, but In Rainbows is just great throughout instantly. |
StrangerofSorts
05.18.11 | Meh you don't like something, no need to make a song a dance out of it. In the end you have to admit that they've made a whole bunch of incredible albums bar 1 1/2 of them (Pablo Honey and the first half of The King of Limbs). So while you may not like them, you can't blame other people from thinking differently. I think it might be a mood thing, from the albums you've listed you don't seem the kind to "get all intimate". |
TheArkitecht
05.18.11 | @ I'll give In Rainbows a shot, thanks :)
@StrangerofSorts ohh yeah I don't deny that the band has talent, they're obvious not lacking any of it, I just can't seem to dig their sound and feel I'm missing out slightly on something which is said to be incredible lol. I don't blame others for thinking differently, everyones entitled to their opinion. |
MarvellousG
05.18.11 | I had the exact same thing, I knew I was missing out by not liking them. |
StrangerofSorts
05.18.11 | Then just make yourself listen to it and it'll come. I agree with "In Rainbows" as a starter. |
fr33convict
05.18.11 | "In the end you have to admit that they've made a whole bunch of incredible albums bar 1 1/2 of them"
I love Radiohead but seriously the fuck? What about them makes them incredible to a person who doesn't like them? Their songwriting is uneventful, their actual musicianship isn't very strong, etc., |
BloodSweatandBeers
05.18.11 | exactly |
Psychopathologist
05.18.11 | they used to be cool |
TheArkitecht
05.18.11 | just listened to a few tracks off In Rainbows, I was surprisingly impressed, this is a good sign lol. |
StrangerofSorts
05.18.11 | Their songwriting is uneventful? I trust then that you have no concept of musical theory. In all albums they've continually pushed the boundaries of what is expected of music. Examples? They combine vocals with chords to make overall different chords while creating a kind of disjointed unease, some of their songs do not actually have a time signature (Pyramid Song for instance), they combine genres you wouldn't think would work but do (Kid A houses some electronic jazz), they compose in scales and modes that are unheard of by most people outside of classical music and they've constantly changed their style throughout their career. |
MarvellousG
05.18.11 | @StrangerofSorts - I'm a massive Radiohead fanboy, but I don't think any of those things you listed can be used as actual 'evidence' as to why they're good. Hell, some of those things would be offputting to people if anything. I just like them because I love their music, I don't really fancy paring it down like it's maths. |
TheArkitecht
05.18.11 | I have absolutely no musical theory knowledge, I can identify different characteristics of genres but thats it. I just listen to what I enjoy irrelevant of musical knowledge involved. |
StrangerofSorts
05.18.11 | @MarvellousG: I realise that, but I was just responding to the claim that it was uneventful. For example, I don't particularly like BTBAM, but I can appreciate them and there are reasons for that.
Sorry to get all maths-y but I like to (over)analyse things and I've had a lot of time to do that as far as Radiohead are concerned :/ |
YetAnotherBrick
05.18.11 | OK Computer > Your favorite album. |
NigelH
05.18.11 | I thought they were massively overrated for the longest time, but I kept listening and trying to figure out why people raved about them so much and eventually it all clicked. Now they are possibly my favorite band. It may take a little persistence to get into their sound, but it's totally worth it in my opinion. Their music also has insane amounts of replay value. |
NigelH
05.18.11 | YetAnotherBrick speaks the truth. |
TheArkitecht
05.18.11 | I wouldn't say Ok computer is better than F# A# (infinity)... and I will constantly continue to try and get into them, something eventually might click. |
MarvellousG
05.18.11 | NigelH is correct in his first comment. But Kid A > everyone's favourite album, me included |
ilikeforests
05.18.11 | Agree with fr33convict. The reasons I love Radiohead have very little to do with "objective good things" about music. They do dabble in some technical wizardy but it's their songs that give them fanboys, and in the end they're basically just a pop band. |
MarvellousG
05.18.11 | *insert typical Radiohead fan 'THEY'RE SO MUCH MORE THAN A POP BAND YOU LUDDITE'*
But nah, I agree. They're just a really, really good one. |
climactic
05.18.11 | okc is my favorite by far |

also arkitecht Radiohead is one of those bands where if you know the lyrics it makes the songs infinitely better |
NigelH
05.18.11 | Their lyrics are superb, and knowing them can improve the listening experience. Another thing about Radiohead is that they are masters of the album format. The songs are always sequenced immaculately and the ebb and flow of the listening experience throughout the record is always top-notch. |

Yeah I've taken college level jazz theory classes. That's not "evidence" that they're amazing. Pyramid Song is in 12/8 but the piano emphasizes unusual notes. Also, by uneventful I meant not exciting or interesting to the average listener. Sorry if I confused you. |
wabbit
05.18.11 | They are so good because they are so incredibly gifted at absorbing everything around them then refining that and making it their own. |
InAbsentia
05.18.11 | What's not to love about them? Even the most hipster, mainstream-hating people will tell you they love them.
They're by far the best popular band. |
MarvellousG
05.18.11 | Trudat. |
demigod!
05.18.11 | I love Radiohead, but they are overrated as hell. especially Ok Computer. |
gotsthedewsdood
05.19.11 | Overrated? Yes. Bad? No fucking way.
They definitely do push boundries and they are influenced by a wide variety of genres.
I think their lyrics are hit and miss but they aim for atmosphere and moods so it's forgivable. |
DinoX
05.19.11 | I can't get into them either, it just depends on the style you prefer I guess but it always takes some time to get into the rewarding albums. |
RadioheadSucks
05.19.11 | Eh, my opinion is clear. |
Josh D.
05.19.11 | Radiohead is a boring band that people overrate because you have to "get" them even though it's yawn. |
