| Under The Underground...
Right...so here's a short list of underground hip-hop gems that you may have missed. Make sure that, while you're digging on Mobb Deep, Odd Future and CunninLynguists, you take the time to check these out too, lest you miss something truly amazing. | 1 | | Asheru and Blue Black Soon Come...
A heavily jazz-infused hip-hop album from the guy who does the theme song for The Boondocks. One of my favorites, absolutely. | 2 | | Haiku d'Etat Haiku d'Etat
An underground collaborative gem from Abstract Rude, Aceyalone and Mikah 9. The beats don't get in the way here, allowing for the flow to shine. It's worth picking up for "Non Compos Mentis" alone. | 3 | | K. M. D. Black Bastards
The group from whence sprang forth MF Doom, except this is from waaaay back in the day. Excellent flow, awesome beats, and a distinctly nostalgic flavor...what more could you ask for? | 4 | | LeCrae Rehab
Perhaps the biggest name in Christian Rap right now. If you can stomach the blatantly religious lyrics (and if you call yourself a music fan, you should), you'll find an album showcasing an insanely talented hip-hop artist at the top of his game. | 5 | | Little Brother The Minstrel Show
Reminiscent of more mainstream conscious rappers like Common or Mos Def. Album is straight BOSS. | 6 | | Macklemore The Language of My World
Caught this guy earlier this year at SXSW while waiting for Immortal Technique, and he absolutely blew me away. No, really...if you dig Alternative Rap like Atmosphere or Aesop Rock, you owe it to yourself to grab this album next. Like RIGHT NOW. | 7 | | The Nextmen Amongst The Madness
Laid-back hip-hop...jazzy, but not quite as jazzy as #1. Good stuff to listen to or to chill to. | 8 | | Nomak Calm
Definitely one of the most unique hip-hop albums I've ever heard, DJ Nomak samples traditional songs from his homeland of Japan and makes beats out of them. Half of the album is instrumental, half of it has rapping...ALL of it is beautiful. | |
Masochist
