Yes she did. Good lawd. Kate too. I saw a bit of it. It was kind of interesting and kind of nauseating. The coverage I saw had some upper-class British lady making comments, about the common folk and stuff and it was just so out of touch with reality. They should change the vows for the royals too. "for richer or poorer"... that's fucking insulting.
I would hate the idea of having my wedding broadcast to a global audience of 2 billion. I'd be so nervous I'd just constantly chunder. If this kind of thing happened every week, I'd go to great lengths to avoid it but because it's such a rarity and on such a massive scale I can't help but pay attention. |

Just to add onto this, you have to understand that there are a lot of die hard patriots who consider the two princes to be the "sons of England" so to speak. But the wedding is/was more than just a celebration of two people coming together, the royal family just introduced the commonwealth to their future queen, and a lot of people are obviously concerned about who ends up with that top spot |

The Royal Family and the Middletons paid for all wedding expenses (sure, we pay the royal family but thats like 64 pence a year or something). The only thing the taxpayer would have paid for is the security, but then no-one complains when there are masses of security at, say, football games every week. I'm no huge lover of the Royal Family, but I accept that its part of our heritage and brings us a good deal of tourism, and it meant everyone had a day off yesterday which was awesome. Explain to me how being the future rulers of the commonwealth equates to not contributing to anyones lives. Aside from the fact that you may not be a part of the commonwealth doesn't count either. You do realize that these 2 will end up serving their countries one day, and already have in various capacities. It wasn't just a 'famous wedding", as i said earlier in this thread its the coming together of the countries future rulers. Look at the president of the united states. Generally someone will show up in their early twenties and make small waves in the political scene. Ten years later his profile might rise high enough that the general public might become aware of him/her, and some time later they might make a run for presidency. Now look at Prince William. He was born into the role and has grown up in the public eye of a somewhat patriotic society. It's perfectly understandable the level of attention this has been given, and how many people have a vested interest in it. So of course you'll hear all about it, the news media is always going to appease public interest in something that they want coverage on |

04.30.11 | The idea that people should only care about the things or people that directly affect their life is bordering on insane. The royals don't have any significant political power anymore, though they still have some sway, but they represent hundreds of millions of people. Recent decades have reduced them to a joke, with embarrassing ends to marriages etc, but William and Harry have both, generally speaking, behaved like normal people - ones that have actually succeeded in their roles as figureheads. Patriotism falls apart if you try and dissect it logically, but instinctively people want to come together and feel some solidarity. When there is a living symbol that allows that to happen, of course people will care. You are an absolute dipshit, andcas. |

I think anyone who looks at it as some type of "they're gonna change the world" scenario is pretty idiotic. The wedding itself was as big as it was simply because it was the coming together of the future "leaders" of the royal family, nothing more.
"I may have underestimated the significance of the event to certain residents of that area but my view of annoyance started from how some people and the media are viewing it in the states. ConsiderPhlebas
04.30.11 | Because people like Russell Brand and Katy Perry are not a living symbol of millenia of culture, history and tradition. Just like the older generations who still carry a sense of duty to their country don't feel any direct connection to Posh and David Beckham, because even though they look nice, they're not even figureheads, let alone leaders. On top of this, English patriotism (and I mean real patriotism, not just the hatred peddled by football fans) is much more reserved than America's. We lock onto events and symbols, because they help to bring people together in a sense of solidarity. |
Sowing
04.30.11 | Well I think I understand a little better, although I'm sure it would help to live in England. It's just hard for me to see the importance of the wedding, despite its historical value, without any type of associated power/influence/political purpose. ConsiderPhlebas
04.30.11 | For all the charity work they do etc, their main function is being a symbol. The original idea of a monarchy was that they were appointed, very literally, by God. 04.30.11 | I think one of the main reasons it got so much coverage in the media was because, in the last week or two, there hasn't been as many big news stories that would have perhaps filled at least some of the space.
