04.24.11 | First two aren't my only growers, just the two biggest ones. Tell me what ya think. |
DinoX
04.24.11 | 1 was a grower for me |
pedroia55
04.24.11 | Same for me Dino |
mmfarva
04.24.11 | My best friend says you should know within the first ten seconds, because first impressions are the most honest and important parts.
My best friend is a piece of shit. |
Satellite
04.24.11 | 1 and 11 i loved right away. 2 took my a while but not as long as kid a. |
SeaAnemone
04.24.11 | Not all music needs or deserves time to grow but some does. That simple. |
YetAnotherBrick
04.24.11 | ^ Yeah, that's true. That, along with the person, too. Like, some music has to grow for some people, but someone can love that same album the first time they hear it. And vice versa and back and forth and whatnot lol
I just found it kind of strange that my gf says she knows her impression of ANYTHING the first time she hears it. |
dreamobile
04.24.11 | 2 was a grower for me. also
Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
TVOTR - Dear Science
GY!BE - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists
Gospel - The Moon Is A Dead World
|
YetAnotherBrick
04.24.11 | ^ Yeah, I can definitely see Monoliths and Lift Yr. Skinny Fists being growers, but I loved The Moon Is A Dead World the first time I heard it, though. Huh. Interesting. |
Departures
04.24.11 | most black metal grew on me
most drone grew on me
JAZZ definitely grew on me
funeral doom grew on me
hip-hop grew on me |
YetAnotherBrick
04.24.11 | So maybe you could say that typically, it's the unique, very aesthetically extreme genres that tend to need to grow on the listener? Genres like death metal, black metal, drone, weird/progressive stuff, some jazz, etc. |
Departures
04.24.11 | Pretty much anything outside ones comfort zone. |
NigelH
04.24.11 | 15 and 2 were huge growers for me. At first I thought they were massively overhyped. Then one song would click, then another, and after awhile I inevitably became obsessed with both albums. |
YetAnotherBrick
04.24.11 | Yeah, even after you love it, 15 just gets better and better anyway haha |
Chrisjon89
04.24.11 | I agree with 1. I heard One Armed Scissor and didn't come back to it for months.
I struggled with hardcore etc back in the day, and jazz fusion I guess. |
TMobotron
04.24.11 | i can't form an opinion on a song until ive heard it at least 3 times, usually more.
this is especially true for albums. in fact i find a lot of albums pretty boring on first listen, and its only after listening a few more times that i really see what they're accomplishing. |
wittwright
04.24.11 | 1 was a grower
and it took a while for Thrice to grow on me, but now they're one of my favorite bands now |
YetAnotherBrick
04.24.11 | ^ Yeah, exactly, because some albums have a lot going on. Sometimes so much that the albums themselves almost DEMAND repeated listens. Great point. |
eternium
04.24.11 | You still have to like it within a few listens. What makes it a grower is liking it more and more and more and more until it gives you boners. |
YetAnotherBrick
04.24.11 | So do you think that it's possible for some people to not like an album any more the fifth time they hear it than the first time? |
YetAnotherBrick
04.24.11 | Bump. |
EverythingEvil2113
04.24.11 | For me I can kind of tell if it's worth the time, like I need to find something i enjoy right away that i can build on. Take Jane Doe for instance, I couldn't stand the vocals and the manic pace of it at first, but I really enjoyed some of the riffs, so with that to build on I kept listening and listening until the whole thing clicked for me eventually. |
TMobotron
04.24.11 | "You still have to like it within a few listens"
i dont think this is true, and especially not for albums far outside of someone's comfort zone. For example if you gave some Burzum to someone who just listens to radio music and the like, they would hate it for who knows how many listens, but that doesn't mean they would never like it.
Of course that's taking a huge extreme, but i think some of the most interesting music to get into is the stuff that's really unfamiliar and that can take a lot more time. |
wabbit
04.24.11 | ya I agree I have come back to albums I didn't like (Caribou from last year) and listened to it a year later and holy shit it was good...and that wasn't even a challenging album to get into. |
aok
04.24.11 | 2 was instantaneous for me. can't stand 1 even though i've given a couple listens and am a huge fan of de-loused |
mahan9792
04.24.11 | 8 is truly amazing. i've NEVER liked folk music. i decided to check it out when i seen it was the best album of 2010. it took me a few listens to get used to his voice, but once i did i truly loved it. |
YetAnotherBrick
04.25.11 | Wow, it looks like there's a lot of evidence here for the notion that if you don't like something the first time you listen to it, it can, and a lot of times will grow on you.
@aokuneff
I wouldn't say that really matters, considering 1 and De-loused are pretty different, to say the least lol
@TMobotron
Great point. But there can be instances where someone will absolutely never get into something. I mean, I listen to tons of different music, but there are a few genres where no matter how much I listen to them, I just can't get into em. But then again, maybe I just need to give em even more time...
@mahan9792
Yeah, I didn't really like his voice at all the first time I heard it. Now I adore it. That was definitely a grower haha |
YetAnotherBrick
04.25.11 | @EverythingEvil2113
Yeah, that definitely helps with some albums. Just taking one step at a time haha |
Josh D.
04.25.11 | You really don't think you can dislike a song after one listen? #crunkcore |
YetAnotherBrick
04.25.11 | Well, besides that shit. That's a given. XD |
Josh D.
04.25.11 | Well for me, a lot of things are given in the same scenario. |
YetAnotherBrick
04.25.11 | Like? |
kitsch
04.25.11 | once your musical palate is mature you dont need to let albums grow |
YetAnotherBrick
04.25.11 | Um, can you elaborate on that a bit? |
Josh D.
04.25.11 | "Like?"
I don't know, I just dislike certain genres as a whole, for example. |
pedroia55
04.25.11 | Um, can you elaborate on that a bit? [2] |
whywontyoudie
04.25.11 | Sigur Ros as a whole have been a massive grower for me. |
YetAnotherBrick
04.25.11 | "I don't know, I just dislike certain genres as a whole, for example."
Oh, well, for you personally, that makes sense. At first, with the crunkcore mention, I thought you were talking about things that would be a given for everybody haha
@whywontyoudie
Yeah, same here. But once you get into em, they're soooo good. |
Josh D.
04.25.11 | "I thought you were talking about things that would be a given for everybody haha"
No, definitely not. |
