Butkuiss: Emerging Metal Genres

Butkuiss 04.21.11	Obvious list is obvious. Started out as a thought experiment between me and a mate, curious to see other peoples' take on things. EDIT: Whoopsie, looking back, I might've included Post-black (Twilight, Alcest, etc.)-but meh.

Emim 04.21.11	djent is not a genre. just like chug or shred are not genres either.
DonniSharK 04.21.11	Djent is becoming a style of its own. It started out as just being Meshuggah copycat bands, but it seems to actually be going somewhere. In 5 years time, djent will be a legitimate style of groove metal. Deal with it. But yeah, list is missing the most obvious rising "metal" style, the so called post-black or blackgaze. Pretty good stuff in that genre if you ask me.
Butkuiss 04.21.11	In all actuality, I've heard people refer to "shred" as a genre too. But really, right now, djent is looking to be the accepted term for whatever you want to call the movement. Technical polyrhythmic math-metal with ambient and electronica influences is a bit long. I'm not saying I like the term at all, but it's looking like it's here to stay. Kind of like the whole post-metal vs. Atmospheric Sludge Metal argument. Sure, alot of people prefer the term atmospheric sludge and argue that post-metal isn't a valid term, but in reality, it's still been adopted by the majority as the default name for the movement.

Butkuiss 04.21.11	That might be true, it was just an observation. But you can't deny that, like it or not, djent as a movement/term is going to stay, especially when entire bands and communities are touting it.

Djent does this too, but in a slightly different fashion, specifically a much higher tempo. But it still grooves. It has all the elements of groove metal. At least that's how I see it.
Butkuiss 04.21.11	Pirate metal doesn't really have the capacity to get big-it's just power metal with a folk and subtle thrash influence. Not many other places the genre can go after Swashbuckle and Alestorm.
Butkuiss 04.21.11	Obsolete double post, so I'll just split it in two. Also, Many see djent as a hybrid of prog-metal and groove metal, in it's simplest form. Of course, it goes much much deeper than that, but yeah.

The drumming in djent is nearly identical to groove metal except the tempo is much higher. What I wrote made sense.

Butkuiss 04.21.11	Well, let's also discuss the possible directions metal's going to take in the future! It'll be interesting to see how bands like Silent Descent and other related bands continue on in the next decade. A few techno-heads I know love Blood Stain Child, so there's cross-genre appeal, and the combination could produce some interesting outcomes. But then again, it could also come out as another Nu-Metal explosion.

Butkuiss 04.21.11	It always comes back to genre tag debates in the end, doesn't it? In all actuality, I agree genre debates are stupid. People will label and categorise how they want to, and they won't stop, no matter how many debates and arguments people have. Humans are oddly inclined to try and pigeonhole things which can't really be pigeonholed. The point of the list wasn't so much to start a genre debate as to have a bit of fun predicting what trends/movements/influences will become more prevalent in the next decade. But ah well.

TheSpirit 04.21.11	At first Kvelertak was like "HELL YEAH THIS IS A LOT OF FUN" but after a few listens it's kinda like "OH HEY THIS ISN'T AS GREAT AS I FIRST THOUGHT!" Anyone who wants some good black metal/hardcore hybrid should check out Leper.
