04.21.11 | Obvious list is obvious. Started out as a thought experiment between me and a mate, curious to see other peoples' take on things.
EDIT: Whoopsie, looking back, I might've included Post-black (Twilight, Alcest, etc.)-but meh. |
Mordecai.
04.21.11 | i would respond to this list, but i just ran out of cheetohs so i am too emotional right now to make any objective comments = ( |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | I can't eat those things. They're so cheesy I'll have one and won't be able to stop till I pass out. I feel your pain, dude. |
Emim
04.21.11 | djent is not a genre.
just like chug or shred are not genres either. |
DonniSharK
04.21.11 | Djent is becoming a style of its own. It started out as just being Meshuggah copycat bands, but it seems to actually be going somewhere. In 5 years time, djent will be a legitimate style of groove metal. Deal with it.
But yeah, list is missing the most obvious rising "metal" style, the so called post-black or blackgaze. Pretty good stuff in that genre if you ask me. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | In all actuality, I've heard people refer to "shred" as a genre too.
But really, right now, djent is looking to be the accepted term for whatever you want to call the movement. Technical polyrhythmic math-metal with ambient and electronica influences is a bit long. I'm not saying I like the term at all, but it's looking like it's here to stay.
Kind of like the whole post-metal vs. Atmospheric Sludge Metal argument. Sure, alot of people prefer the term atmospheric sludge and argue that post-metal isn't a valid term, but in reality, it's still been adopted by the majority as the default name for the movement. |
Emim
04.21.11 | "In all actuality, I've heard people refer to "shred" as a genre too."
These are people that call Metallica speed metal. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | That might be true, it was just an observation. But you can't deny that, like it or not, djent as a movement/term is going to stay, especially when entire bands and communities are touting it. |
Emim
04.21.11 | Well they should come up with less of a stupid name.
"djent will be a legitimate style of groove metal."
And I fail to see how it's a form of groove metal. |
InjunJoe
04.21.11 | Swashbuckle are flyin the flag for Pirate Metal |
DonniSharK
04.21.11 | "And I fail to see how it's a form of groove metal."
What else would it be a style of? Syncopated drums and slow downtuned riffs is more or less what made groove metal what it is. Djent does this too, but in a slightly different fashion, specifically a much higher tempo. But it still grooves. It has all the elements of groove metal.
At least that's how I see it. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | Pirate metal doesn't really have the capacity to get big-it's just power metal with a folk and subtle thrash influence. Not many other places the genre can go after Swashbuckle and Alestorm. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | *Obsolete double post, so I'll just split it in two.* Also, Many see djent as a hybrid of prog-metal and groove metal, in it's simplest form. Of course, it goes much much deeper than that, but yeah. |
Emim
04.21.11 | "slow downtuned riffs" + "specifically a much higher tempo" = ??? |
Mordecai.
04.21.11 | guys...
cheetohs. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | Mordecai has his priorities right...
|
DonniSharK
04.21.11 | ""slow downtuned riffs" + "specifically a much higher tempo" = ???"
Tempo has nothing to do with how fast the riffs are played. The tempo in djent is determined by the drumming. The drumming in djent is nearly identical to groove metal except the tempo is much higher. What I wrote made sense. |
liledman
04.21.11 | "Technical polyrhythmic math-metal... "
have you ever listened to "dissonant arhythmic metalcore fusion"? cool shit. |
InjunJoe
04.21.11 | i wouldnt call it subtle |
Gnocchi
04.21.11 | Yes, on 2. |
JamieTwort
04.21.11 | My mate's brother used to be in Silent Descent before they went all Trancey. |
Departures
04.21.11 | let's just call it metal because that is what it is. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | Well, let's also discuss the possible directions metal's going to take in the future!
It'll be interesting to see how bands like Silent Descent and other related bands continue on in the next decade. A few techno-heads I know love Blood Stain Child, so there's cross-genre appeal, and the combination could produce some interesting outcomes. But then again, it could also come out as another Nu-Metal explosion. |
Gnocchi
04.21.11 | probably the latter, and it wil be hated for it. |
Polymath
04.21.11 | Trance Metal/Trancecore is horrible |
Hocmat
04.21.11 | Dub-Metal: It's gonna suck. |
Gnocchi
04.21.11 | ^^ here comes the hate. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | Dub metal as in the reggae dub, or as in dubstep dub? Reggae metal...that'd be something to hear. And Trance Metal is actually alright; I like Blood Stain Child, at least. |
Hocmat
04.21.11 | I was talking about Dubstep metal, but Dub metal would be... interesting...yeah. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | Didn't P.O.D. used to bill themselves as "reggae metal" or something? They were pretty horrid. |
Gnocchi
04.21.11 | reggae metal, sounds like the chicken pox. |
defjaw83
04.21.11 | Skindred pretty much have reggae metal covered |
porch
04.21.11 | lets just file all these under shitty music |

04.21.11 | Kvelertak shitty? Are you out of your mind?! Even Tesseract is pretty dope at times. |

04.21.11 | "A few techno-heads I know love Blood Stain Child, "
Then they obviously have the worst possible taste imaginable
And oh my god, a couple of really shitty "metal" bands threw some trance segments into their music. It's obviously going to become its own genre now then!! |
alachlahol
04.21.11 | lets hope none of these emerge theres enough horrible bands out there as it is |
BloodSweatandBeers
04.21.11 | That's what always seems to happen. People go all apeshit for a couple quirky new things in a band's sound and create an entire new genre when in reality it's just what it was before. Pretty retarded. Of this list the only one I agree with is Djent. |
defjaw83
04.21.11 | Tgis trance thing is nothing new anyway. Static-X were doing that right from their first album |

04.21.11 | people coming up with some insightful shit on this topic |
BloodSweatandBeers
04.21.11 | You know it Dev ;)
I just hate the explosion of genres and endless debates regarding a band's genre tag. Fucking let it go people. |
alachlahol
04.21.11 | let me set the record here bros. bands try new things even though theyre just playing the same stuff bands before them have alwasy played. thats it |
Wolfhorde
04.21.11 | I really hope metal doesn't grow even further. It's big and versatile enough. I really don't want to hear future-trance-dub-raggae-rap-metal. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | It always comes back to genre tag debates in the end, doesn't it? In all actuality, I agree genre debates are stupid. People will label and categorise how they want to, and they won't stop, no matter how many debates and arguments people have. Humans are oddly inclined to try and pigeonhole things which can't really be pigeonholed.
The point of the list wasn't so much to start a genre debate as to have a bit of fun predicting what trends/movements/influences will become more prevalent in the next decade. But ah well.

04.21.11 | It's just like revolution. First there are some that do something completely new or want to do something completely new and then comes another one that wants "something old" back and then it all repeats over and over and over again. |

04.21.11 | 'djent' is going to be the next deathcore.
never heard of 'trancecore', sounds ridiculous
im cool with blackened hardcore, it just takes away from the really good bands that have been doing it their whole existence. no hate though |
AngelofDeath
04.21.11 | Blackcore has been around for a while now, and blackened hardcore even longer. |
Butkuiss
04.21.11 | Basically, trance metal/core is this stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oi-8xl7uZs
Yeah, I know a few bands have already been doing the black/hardcore thing, I'm just tipping it'll start to get absorbed into the mainstream, at least in part, fairly soon. |
TheSpirit
04.21.11 | blackened hardcore has been around since the nineties |

04.21.11 | but there has been a lot more of it as of late |

Yeah, I made that prediction before Kvelertak came out, and they pretty much confirmed it. They're ok, but there are bands I feel that have done that sort of thing much better. |

04.21.11 | pretty interesting list

04.21.11 | At first Kvelertak was like "HELL YEAH THIS IS A LOT OF FUN" but after a few listens it's kinda like "OH HEY THIS ISN'T AS GREAT AS I FIRST THOUGHT!"
Anyone who wants some good black metal/hardcore hybrid should check out Leper. |
AngelofDeath
04.21.11 | I absolutely second that. And Leech's first demo as well. |

Like seriously, whoa, I hope techno-core doesn't become a massive genre.
I've heard dubcore before, and when it's well done, it's pretty cool. But, that's a rare occurrence. |
