04.11.11 | Oh, and I forgot to put 'I Walk Beside You' by Dream Theater as well. |
balcaen
04.11.11 | if you're down with the metallica, i suggest learning the solos from sanitarium (the actual bits that aren't parts of solos are pretty simple), i've been using them as my warm-ups for around a year now, instead of just playing scale and sweeping and shit. |
ButcheredChildren
04.11.11 | Some of these would be to hard for you if you are a beginner a.k.a Dream Theater & August Burns Red. |
ButcheredChildren
04.11.11 | ABR is in D, that's a step down, don't even worry about bands that drop tune until you can play well in Standard tuning. |
balcaen
04.11.11 | otherwise, yeah. like BC said these are a step above beginner. ATDR is probably my best guess here. |

04.11.11 | Yeah Marianas Trench, is definitely a bit of a stretch as well as The Spirit Carries on. I was playing
Peruvian Skies earlier and wasn't doing too bad. There's one lick in the beginning of Innocence Faded
that absolutely kills me though, have to metronome that for a few hours.
I'll take your advice on the ABR though thanks man.
@Balcaen: That sounds like a good idea. I'll fit that into my practice schedule tonight and see how it
goes. |

04.11.11 | abr's fun to play, not gonna lie |

04.11.11 | tune to drop D cuz thats easy and try playing some Killswitch Engage or Times Of Grace cuz even though they get a lot of hate they are perfect for beginner metal guitar. They use a whole bunch of tricks and techniques that are essential when you become more advanced.
Volbeat would be good to start you off with blues playing which also becomes essential when you have to bend and manipulate your strings for guitar shreds as you become more advanced. The mix hard rock chords which are super easy with bending and country/blues string manipulation. |

04.11.11 | Thanks for the recs dude, I was actually looking into Rose of Sharyn by Killswitch to learn as well. I'll also check out Volbeat, it'll be nice to be able to branch out and incorporate techniques across genres in my playing later down the line. |

04.11.11 | heres my advice stop listening to dream theater |

04.11.11 | No can do mate, grew up with the band and I enjoy their music. |
ButcheredChildren
04.11.11 | np dude. It will probably be a few years before you can play a Dream Theater song from start to finish if you stay dedicated. |
R6Rider
04.11.11 | Dream Theater will definitely help you get your chops up as long as you're learning that shit the right way!
Biggest advice - Learn everything slow before going up in speed. |

04.11.11 | "Biggest advice - Learn everything slow before going up in speed."
This is very true, at least until you are playing master class.
My guitar teacher told me not to try learning how to sweep on guitar cuz I had only been playing for 4 years and I was able to do it after 3 months of practicing everyday for an hour.
Guitar sweeping and tapping with more than 4 fingers are two of the hardest techniques to learn. ever. |
Desolator
04.11.11 | The collectives latest album has heaps of good stuff in it, I've been learning a few of their songs lately.
ABR was good fun to learn, don't they play in drop C... not drop D?? |
ButcheredChildren
04.11.11 | No but you can play them in in C if you want. Each note is only like a fret down from the original fret. |
Puzzles
04.11.11 | Well, to start off, I would recommend some Yngvie Malmsteen to learn. Don't worry about slowing it down, just get the sheet music and go full speed straight away. Have fun! |
ShinXetsu
04.11.11 | Yeah because I can totally be expected to play material that has things like sweep arpeggios in it >_> |
AnotherBrick
04.11.11 | here's a great site for beginners
