In the wake of news about Kate Bush's upcoming 'Director's Cut' album, which consists of reworkings of old songs (including a very nicely revamped "Deeper Understanding"), I decided to create a list of Kate's albums in a "Best of Kate Bush"-style thing. Hounds of Love
Simply one of the most imaginative albums of all time, and also one of the most beautiful. Everything from the experimental music, to the soaring vocals, to even the mere concept of it all, it is a gorgeous and flawless piece of work. The Sensual World
Not as groundbreaking as Hounds (but then how could it have been?), but still a fantastic album. This really shows Kate in her best light, flitting between different topics like love and technology with ease. This was also her last great release for a long time... but it also gave us one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful singles of the 80s. The Dreaming
I completely think this album was sorely underrated. Her debut awed a lot of people, but that gap in between it and Hounds of Love is often overlooked or observed with a hint of scorn. But why? Sure they might not be as cohesive or inherently intriguing as some of her others, but they are still quite impressive. Especially "The Dreaming," which boasts several different genres and some of Kate's most attractive melodies. The Kick Inside
Her debut marked the start of a long and fruitful career. Recorded when she was still a teenager, this was a marvelous achievement of art and passion. Those keening vocals; those bouncy arrangement; those whimsical lyrics about saxophones, kites, and British literature. It all added up to a very appealing debut for one of the best British artists. Aerial
This was the first we had heard from her in about 12 years, and what an astounding return it was. This sprawling double-LP was Kate's answer from relative obscurity. This was her big revival to a new generation. Never one to shy away from challenge, this is a profoundly experimental album, with many different instruments, sounds, styles, and emotions channeling through -- and that's just the backing. Her lyrics and melodies are given more room to breathe than ever before, resulting in some seriously breathtaking and expansive artistry. Never For Ever
Again, this one is lumped up in Kate's period of albums that critics tend to dislike compared to her others. And while it is not as grand as her others, it still was quite an accomplishment. Her lyrics here are some of her best, and the listener can always tell she is giving it her all. Kate was never one to deny herself her own choices, and we should be so grateful for that. Lionheart
Similar to "Never For Ever," this is one of the more hit-or-miss Kate Bush records. This was released extremely soon after her widely praised debut. She had come out of nowhere about a year earlier, and was already releasing another album. While not nearly as interesting, Lionheart is still worth a listen for any Kate Bush fans. Most likely, the drop in quality is due to a lot of the material being left over from her debut, but that being said, the material on her debut was pretty great, so this is not far from it. Her fluttering, yearning vocals are the star here, with just a little less "umph" given to everything else. Still solid. The Red Shoes
And finally, the album that would be her last statement for about 12 years, "The Red Shoes." While nowhere near a bad album -- actually it's quite enjoyable -- it does not exactly stand up firmly against her others. That being said, a "not-so-great" Kate Bush album is still far better than many other being released. The arrangements are expectedly beautiful and her voice sounds spectacular throughout. The guests on this album are impressive in their mere inclusion, like Eric Clapton and Prince. But even with the star power, this is still very much a Kate Bush record, and though I am marking it my least favorite of hers, I still enjoy it quite a bit. 04.10.11 | Pretty good order here, I haven't heard The Sensual World so I'll have to look into that. Base on what I have heard though I'd probably go 1, 4, 3, 5, 6, 7 myself but The Dreaming is still an excellent album; Get out of my house is possibly her best song.
