Exactly. They lowered the federal and raised the social security, because they figured everyone would be too jazzed about federal to give a damn about social security. These are the things more people need to notice and pay attention to.
You think it's so great when you get a tax return every year, but the fact of the matter is that the government just borrowed a huge chunk of YOUR money without having to pay a dime of interest on any of it. Then they turn around and make you pay crazy interest when you borrow money to go to school so that you can try and make this country a better place. Year after year, decade after decade, things just get worse. Voting for the "Liberals" over the "Republicans" is almost as pointless as voting for Emery over Senses Fail in the year end lists. In the end, it's all the same old bullshit.
I have voted in 2 federal elections and one federal by-election and never felt satisfied. I don't know for sure what it's like in the US, but here in Canada, pretty much no one gives a shit about their constituents once they're elected. They just move their shit to Ottawa and forget where they came from and they promises they made to their hometowns. One notable exception in the MP for my riding who I have met and actually really like, although I don't like who I'm forced to vote for Prime Minister in order to vote for her. ^ No, its designed to punish the people that actually go out and work for a living and achieve, so that the person who sits on their ass can have equal coverage. Its bullshit, won't work in our society, and is a train wreck waiting to happen. Universal Health care can maybe work in smaller countries with very similar ethnic backgrounds. It cannot work in a country like the US without being an unmitigated disaster. not only will the cost go up for people who actually go out and get a fucking job and receive health insurance, the quality will go down because more and more people will be in the system. the US ain't so special man. universal health care works very well pretty much everywhere it exists. don't try to act like the US is too good for it or something. and the idea is not just to reward people who "sit on their ass." it's to make sure citizens are treated like actual human beings. I don't know whose quote this is but it's 100% true (and I'm almost certainly misquoting it, but you'll get the gist hopefully) "The real measure of a society is not it's wealth or power but how it treats its weakest members"

this is not necessarily untrue, but it's also not really all that intuitive. Comedy Central pays Jon Stewart because of his ratings, and his ratings are largely derived from a liberal audience, but Stewart himself didn't seek to 'corner the market' on informed liberal viewership... the people who watch his show (above median income, above median education, below median participation rate) watch it because it's entertaining, not because it's informative (which is why I feel that the show is so great... it tricks people into noticing bullshittery, regardless of what party it comes from). If Stewart had neocon ratings that were identical, his show would receive the same funding. Summer Redstone was butt-buddies with Bush, but good business = good business. |

04.05.11 | It's okay. I just don't understand how anyone can stand for a system in which government picks winners and losers, and wealth is transferred from the middle class to both the poor and the wealthy. Obama either endorses this system, or at least has taken no initiative to change it. He certainly encourages many policies of corporate welfare, just look at G.E. |

04.05.11 | "Voting for the "Liberals" over the "Republicans" is almost as pointless as voting for Emery over Senses Fail in the year end lists. In the end, it's all the same old bullshit."
I can't believe no-one acknowledged this comment haha. Well played. |

04.05.11 | Saying that liberals and Republicans are the same is just a blind statement. The vast majority of politicians are corrupt bastards but they're still vastly different when one wants to dismantle Social Security and the other doesn't, for example.
Thank you Dev for actually realizing that Obama is in the pocket of businesses. However I do believe that he would change the system if he could but he would have to get through Congress to do that. The Dodd-Frank reforms is probably the best he could do. The Republicans and some Democrats aren't going to support anything that forces corporations to actually pay taxes and end corporate welfare. |
Trebor.

04.05.11 | "actually realizing that Obama is in the pocket of businesses"
Any president would be. That's the real problem. Obama came into his presidency with the ideas of change and yes we can, then when he got into office I think he came to the clear realization that alot of the advisors and lobbyists really run the country, wealth and overall distribution of living. He had some great ideas on the plate at the beginning and was getting stuff done, but then got stuck behind the dirty politics and the puppet masters who control everyting.
Electing a republican would only exaserbate this, while it would occur more slow with a democrate. But eventually they would cave. Because in the grand scheme of things, a small % of people control the wealth. Unless the masses band together and REALLY create a strong revolution that would shift the balance of power it will stay this way. Couple that with the scarcity of NON-RENEWABLE resources, which get more expensive (who can afford them?) every year, and this planet is heading into a tailspin of massive proportions in the present of next decade unless something drastic happens now. |
eternium
04.05.11 | I still think it's far more that Obama would have to get through Congress than it is that he's controlled by the wealthy himself. Most of the failed promises are due to Congress. He isn't a dictator, he can't do whatever he wants. |

04.05.11 | He's relationship with GE has nothing to do with congress. The man is a central planner at heart like many politicians before him. He thinks he knows who should win and who should lose. Couple central planning with the nearly unlimited opportunity that the Federal Reserve creates for politicians and special interests, and we can see how we got where we are. The system works both ways though. Corrupt businesses corrupts good politicians and corrupt politicians corrupt good businesses (look at Microsoft). |

04.05.11 | Excuse me, but Obama has proven that he can and does do what he wants without congressional approval. Regardless of his (unjustified) reasons, he had no business entering Libya and that is ESPECIALLY true because he did not consult with Congress. |

04.21.11 | Edmond de la Fontaine (24 July 1823 – 24 June 1891), better known by his pen name of Dicks, was a Luxembourgian jurist, poet, and lyricist, known for his work in the Luxembourgish language. He is considered the national poet of Luxembourg, and, along with Michel Lentz and Michel Rodange, one of the most important figures in the history of Luxembourgian literature. In addition, his Luxemburger Sitten und Bräuche was one of the most influential early ethnographies on the Luxembourgian people.
Fontaine was the third son of Gaspard-Théodore-Ignace de la Fontaine, who was appointed Governor of Luxembourg in 1841, and subsequently served as the country's first Prime Minister in 1848. Fontaine studied at Liège and Heidelberg from 1844 until 1847, before becoming a lawyer in 1850. From 1867 until 1870, he served as mayor of Stadtbredimus, in eastern Luxembourg's Moselle Valley. He lived in Stadtbredimus Castle from 1858 to 1881 when he became a Justice of the Peace in Vianden, where he would live for the last decade of his life. |
