| Hey, Help Me Out Here.
So, I want to start an ambient project, just for the fun of it... I've wanted to for awhile, but have never gotten around to it... I'm planning on just using my old piano and some audio samples of like conversations etc... How do I go about this, as in, what programs/ recording equipment should I look into?

03.27.11 | Yeah, I think Ableton would be best in your situation. Pro tools is great, but only the newest version works with third party interfaces. Plus it's hella expensive. Ableton has plenty of effects to use and whatnot. Since it sounds like you just want to record your piano, an interface should be the main thing you need. Is it an old electric piano or an actual acoustic piano? | Josh D.

And UnnamedOcean: It's an electric, but can't be hooked up to a computer... I'm gonna go but a cheap upright off of Craigslist soon though. Yeah, I'm thinking an interface is the most important at the moment.

03.27.11 | Yeah if you can figure out how to hook it up, that would be good. If not, make sure you get a great microphone for recording an upright. You can probably do with a small 2 or 3 input interface, but a good microphone is a necessity for recording anything acoustic. | North0House2
03.27.11 | Yeah, definitely... I've owned it for 10 years now, so I know all the hook ups on the thing, and I'm fairly certain that it does not have a hook up jack, it only has jacks for microphones and headphones...
Definitely, I was already assuming I'd get a nice mic and mount it on the top of the upright, then hook it up to my computer from there. |
