While I did grow up in an affluent household, I have been a complete fuck up and am living a life of menial labor. It's also true that the people who live degraded lives tend to not complain and are ironically more positive than people from the affluent countries. That said, I DO think there is more than enough misery in the world to support my argument that the earth is a fucking hell hole. I bet the roughly 800 million people who go hungry and without clean water a day are pretty miserable. And that's just one example

Before capitalism took hold, a sense of duty would have provided compensation for any lack people suffered, but their lives were hardly carefree. Life is beautiful because beauty isn't limited to fluffy, happy things and events. We're living on a dynamic, shifting ball of rock, magma and water, hurtling through space, being dragged by a humungous nuclear reactor in a universe too massive to comprehend. We're miracles of chance, products of billions of years of organic life fighting tooth and nail to survive long enough to pass on their genes to the next generation. We think of death as something awful, but really it enriches and intensifies our lives precisely through the limitation of our existence. An eternal life would be grey, meaningless and would drive everyone insane in the end. Whenever I miss the people close to me who've died, I'm most acutely aware of the fact that they actually existed - that's what's important, not the fact that they're not around anymore. Just because life is more of a fight than a joyride doesn't take away from the fact that the universe accidentally coughed up Shakespeare, Everest, neutron stars, comedy, philosophy, music, love, honour, sacrifice, charity....

ConsiderPhlebas 03.27.11	I know very little about native american history, but the vikings... they had a purpose, but one based around aggressive expansion of their culture. I don't see how their brand of war is any more worthwhile than the one we have now - certainly there was a type of honour in that life; bravery, comradery etc, but their lives were relatively small in ambition and scope. Art, philosophy and science are all so amazing, I personally think it'd be a tragedy of the worst kind to lose them, even though the life they are born from is one less contented than the brutal simplicity of the vikings. I don't care about living a full life, if I did I would never log onto the internet, but all the discontent life can throw at me can't take away from the feeling I get when I watch a great film or play, or read a work of literature that shakes my opinions to the core.

It seems inevitable that population crashes will occur in the future, because there just aren't the resources for 7-8 billion human beings to exist for any length of time, but what's left of the species will sink back into old ruts of religious, race/gender-based oppression. When you say that smaller communities mean less corruption... well maybe, but injustice and inhumanity aren't limited to corruption. The rules of these communities will be dictated by the guys with guns, and will be subject to their prejudices. It also seems hard to imagine that, when things get tough, we won't all start throwing nukes at each other. If that happens, I doubt humanity will exist for long afterwards anyway.
