European Post Metal

Post-metal from Europe. Simple as that.
1Cult of Luna
Salvation

Sweden:
One of the genre's big three (Isis, Neurosis) that I consider to be nearly
perfect bands. Some moments are heavy as hell while others are beautiful
beyond words. The eight member band is nearly an orchestra by itself with
every instrument and voice used to add to the atmosphere, complimenting
each other while not simply playing the same thing.

2Year of No Light
Nord

France:
A band focused more on making a dark atmosphere that you find yourself
lost in rather than hammering you down with heavy riffs. Everything builds
up and flows together into a storm that hovers over you. Sometimes they
have vocals, sometimes they don't.

3Amenra
Mass II: Sermons

Belgium:
One of the darkest post-metal bands out there. The riffs are crushing, the
mood is devastating, and, most notably, the vocals tear apart at your soul.

4Omega Massif
Geisterstadt

Germany:
Brooding instrumental post-metal. Generally darker and heavier than
anything Pelican has done.

5Time to Burn
Is.Land

France:
This one really took me off guard. Somehow the band manages to be
heavier than hell despite apparently using telecasters. Drop z strumming
matched with screamo-like shrieks to kill. This shouldn't be missed.

6Overmars
Affliction, Endocrine...Vertigo

France:
One of the most versatile and unique post-metal bands I've heard so far.
Songs range from the suicidal "Buccolision" to the emo-like "Destroy All
Dreamers Part III" to the 40 minute epic "Born Again."

7Tephra
A Modicum of Truth

Germany:
Pretty typical but still excellent post-metal band. Has everything you
expect, pretty post-rock sections mixed with heavy sludge riffs with
powerful vocals over them.

8Latitudes
Agonist

United Kingdom:
Mostly instrumental with the occasional vocals, the band utilizes great
crushing riffs, a truckload of reverb, and everything else you'd expect from a
post-metal band without simply being a copycat.

9Rorcal
Myrra, Mordvynn, Marayaa

Switzerland:
One of the heaviest and slowest out there. The band definitely focuses
more on the doom/sludge aspects than the post-rock, endlessly putting
devastating riff after devastating riff together into long songs and a thick
black. They seem to have a fetish for long epics with their latest being the
70 minute "Heliogabalus."

10Amia Venera Landscape
The Long Procession

Italy:
About half post-metal/half metalcore, it's still enough to put them on the
list. The band is simply awe-inspiring with their mix of melody, emotion, and
heavy, ranging from off-time dissonant riffing to modern post-hardcore
clean singing.

11Radare
Infinite Regress

Germany:
This band loves build ups. They love to remain pretty and quiet, even
throwing in the trombone sometimes, before shifting to a sludgy climax and
then back again before you know it seamlessly.

12Lento
Icon

Italy:
I saw this band being promoted by Amenra so of course I checked them out
and their brand new "Icon," which is still selling preorders. Another
instrumental band that is dark as hell and generally sticks to shorter songs
(in comparison to other post-metal) based on a riff or two or the more
ambient-like ideas.

13The Ocean
Precambrian

Germany:
While their latest two from 2010 don't match up to their past the band is
still notable for the diversity and pure quality of songs. Most tracks are
created by Robin Staps alone and can involve almost any speed,
instruments from piano to the Berlin Orchestra, numerous (sometimes
guest) vocalists, and can shift at any given time.

14Callisto
Noir

Finland:
Almost a perfect middle for those who love the sludgy riffs and those who
love the dark atmosphere. Calm jazzy sections are one thing that
separates Callisto from other similar bands.

15Bossk
.2

United Kingdom:
A great example of what post-metal is, being a heavier cousin of post-rock,
music that focuses more on atmosphere and texture than anything else yet
still holding head-moving riffs. Sadly they broke up.

16Suffocate for Fuck Sake
Blazing Fires and Helicopters on the Fro

Sweden:
Mixture of Funeral Diner screamo and Cult of Luna post-metal results in
something emotional and heavy in every way possible. Lovers of either
genre would love this even if the voice samples are slightly too common.
There's a story here.

Shifting

Italy:
Post-metal + extras such as jazzy trumpets and such for a more exciting
atmosphere with twists and turns. Lots of clean singing too.

18Blindead
Affliction XXIX II MCMXCVI

Poland:
Everything that comes out of Poland seems to be so bleak and dark.
Brilliant band with lots of cleans.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYsfcuN_kQ0
19Fields of Locust
Subtopia

Greece:
Groovy post-metal? A great band that does everything right and certainly
deserves more attention.
