Question Everything?

So I have a real odd question. It's been bugging me for weeks. What is the difference between rap and hip-hop? I understand that they're somewhat similar, but I've never been able to define the exact difference. Is it that rap is more focused on the vocal delivery explicitly, whereas hip-hop has a more even focus on turntables/instruments as a part of the music? Is rap simply a "heavier" version of hip-hop akin to the metal/rock relationship? Can someone please define!? List is some recent hip-hop/rap digs.
