| GY!BE Setlist: Feb. 16, 2011, Vancouver BC
@The Vogue Theatre. The opening act was called rr"Total Life" and was an electronic artist who rrmanipulated super low bass tones to create rrsoundscapes, some of it similar to downtempo rrdubstep. As far as Godspeed goes, it would be rruseless for me to try to find the words to rexpress rhow utterly breathtaking their show was. rI'll just rsay that I feel as if I have just been rreborn, and reverything that had happened to me up runtil the rGY!BE show was leading up to the rrdefining musical rmoment that was last night. rYes, it was that good. rIf you have even the rslightest chance to catch rthis tour, you would be rthe stupidest person alive rto not take the chance r(I'm looking at you, rScoot). The tour poster is rawesome as well. | | 1 | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Hope Drone
As soon as "Total Life" finished his set, he hit a switch and the F# started
to drone. As the band members slowly took the stage and began
contributing to the drone, the word "Hope" was flashed on the screen in
the back. | | 2 | Storm
Yes, that's right. They played Storm, all of it. Those that have been
following their sets will know that they haven't been doing this recently,
usually they just play one or two sections instead of playing an entire 20+
minute piece. But, for lucky Vancouver, they played the whole 22 minute
song: Lift Yr. Skinny Fists, Gathering Storm, "Welcome to Barco AM/PM", and
Cancer Towers on Holy Road Hi-Way. | | 3 | Monheim
After finishing Storm, they stayed with the album Lift Your Skinny Fists...,
and played Monheim. Monheim is the section of Sleep that begins with a
recording of Murray Ostril ranting about Coney Island and how "they don't
sleep anymore on the beach." If you're listening to the song, Monheim lasts
from the beginning until about the 13 minute mark (13:15 on the vinyl). | | 4 | Albanian
This is one of the songs that they have only played live. It was first played
in 2003 (I think) in Lyon, France. | | 5 | Chart #3/World Police and Friendly Fire
More from Lift Your Skinny Fists. This is a large section from Static. It's the
part that starts at about 4 minutes and goes until 15:41. The samples on this
song brought tears to my eyes; it was so beautiful. | | 6 | Dead Metheny
This piece, from Providence, was the only music from The Infinity Unit that
they played. That may disappoint some (I would have rather heard "The
Cowboy" or even "The Sad Mafioso") but I loved all the stuff they played
from Lift Your Skinny Fists. Also, they played for almost three hours and still
there was tonnes of stuff I wish they had played, but if they left anything
off that they ended up playing, I would have been pissed. So, unless they
had played for 5 hours, there was no way I wasn't going to miss at least
something. Anyway, with that being said, they picked an excellent section
from F# A# to play. Dead Metheny is from 2:45 until about the 11 minute
mark on the last track of F# A# (on the CD, I don't think it's on the vinyl
version). | | 7 | Floyd
This was the other part that I had not heard. The song is called "Tazer
Floyd" but was listed as simply "Floyd" on their setlist (yah that's right, I
hopped up on stage and snagged Efrim's setlist). They played it live for the
first time in 2001 in Toronto and it is usually played as part of a longer
section from Yanqui U.X.O. In this case, it was used in conjunction with... | | 8 | Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls
I kind of figured that they would only play one song from Yanqui, and if it
wasn't going to be Motherfucker = Redeemer, I'm glad it was Rockets Fall
on Rockets Fall | | 9 | Blaise Bailey Finnegan III
I have no words to describe the feeling I had when I realized they would
be playing this. Trying to describe how powerful, moving, emotional, and
just plain gorgeous this song is live was would be futile. I just wish that
you could have seen it, because it was life-affirming. It's too bad they didn't
play Moya, but I think I would have been more upset with them not playing
this. This was pure bliss. | |
