So really, it's hard to call any band pretentious without calling all of them pretentious. Some are just more so than others (King Crimson, Yes, Tool, etc...all of these three I like, by the way). Better applied to individuals, rather than bands.

Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious. Most of these bands are quite good and so don't qualify as pretentious for me as they have a right to claim they rock basically because they rock. I think bands such as Creed, Papa Roach, Nickelback and such are pretentious because they are shit and think they're awesome. And they are musically melodramatic.
