Melodeath

Reading the discussion over the new Omnium Gatherum record got me looking back through my melodeath collection; these are my 20 favorite melodeath records, but probably not really what I'd consider the 20 best.
20Sacrilege
Lost in the Beauty you Slay

An often overlooked, but very solid melodeath album.
19The Absence
From Your Grave

Love the guitar work.
18Quo Vadis
Defiant Imagination

Equal parts cheese and awesome. This is my favorite Quo Vadis record, partially because of DiGiorgio's bass.
17The Black Dahlia Murder
Unhallowed

Super fun record, and great vibe from the muddy production.
16Torchbearer
Warnaments

Solid, but not great, album.
15Amorphis
Tales from the Thousand Lakes

This is probably the only Amorphis record I'd consider to be melodeath, but it's a great album.
14Darkest Hour
Deliver Us

Catchy, fun, great melodies, and very passionate. IMO it's between this and Hidden Hands for Darkest Hour's best.
13Insomnium
Since the Day it all came Down

Killer melody after killer melody.
12In Flames
Whoracle

This is In Flames at their pinnacle in my opinion. I think most of their old stuff ends up getting a little overrated, including the Jester Race, but this record is solid.
11Eucharist
Mirrorworlds

One of the better Gothernberg inspired albums. Falls somewhere between the early At the Gates sound and the later, more commercial Gothenburg style that developed.
10Dark Tranquillity
Damage Done

This is my favorite DT record by a mile. It's doesn't have the amateur streak of their early albums like the Gallery (some sloppy transitions and awkward melodies), and it sounds fresher than the rest of the modern-era DT.
9Intestine Baalism
Banquet in the Darkness

Very underrated album. If you're a fan of the genre and don't have this, do yourself a favor and check it out.
8Hypocrisy
Virus

Love this record, it's too much fun.
7Hypocrite
Into the Halls of the Blind

For some inexplicable reason, I overlooked this band when I first heard their demo, and this record. Looking back, that's one of the stupidest things I've ever done, since this album is an absolute gem, one of the best records in the genre. All melodeath fans need to hear this one.
6Autumn Leaves
Embraced by the Absolute

More melodeath bands need to take a page from this band's book and remember that they're still supposed to be playing death metal.
5Arghoslent
Hornets of the Pogrom

Some people probably wouldn't consider this a melodeath album, but in my opinion it is. And holy shit, the RIFFS.
4Garden of Shadows
Oracle Moon

Sputnik actually turned me onto this record, it slipped under my radar otherwise, so I gotta thank you guys for finding this one.
3Edge of Sanity
Crimson

Hard to choose between this, Purgatory Afterglow, and Crimson II, but this one is narrowly the best.
2At the Gates
The Red in the Sky is Ours

I know some people would chose one of the other ATG records, but this is my favorite release from these guys. Still listen to this one all the time.
1Carcass
Heartwork

Carcass really nailed it on this one. In addition to being one of the earliest and most influential melodeath records, this album just captures everything good about the genre.
