02.03.11 | Reaper. Just began using it and it's loaded with features for only $40.
So worth it. |

02.03.11 | Pro Tools LE with some hardware you can pick up reasonably cheap. That'd be good if you're recording acoustic instruments or miking up your amp or something. Or you can look into Logic which is a tad more expensive but it's got synths and drum machines and stuff and a pretty user friendly layout. |

02.03.11 | Reaper is free pretty much. They encourage you to purchase a license to use it which is 40 bucks but you don't need it. FL Studios is good and is loaded with tons of VSTs but isn't the easiest to use. |

02.03.11 | When I say Pro Tools LE is reasonably cheap, I got it for $300AU with the hardware but compared to a full on digital rig that's not too bad and gets you started.
I don't own Logic but I really like it. Making beats and messing around on a MIDI keyboard that I can't really play. |

02.03.11 | I have garage band. I always end up getting disgusted with the quality of the built in mic on my laptop, so I never record anything. |

02.03.11 | I didn't mind garage band either. Logic is pretty similiar in layout I think.
If you have some spare money you could grab an audio interface that plugs into USB or firewire and a decent microphone and make some pretty good quality recordings. |

02.03.11 | garageband on ilife '11 is pretty decent. it gives you a lot of freedom. best used in conjunction with other software plugins, like amplitube, ez drummer and reason. oh, and get a MIDI keyboard. |
