| Rec Me Some Old Country And Others
I feel like Hank III in that I hate pop-country but love the older stuff.
Yet I've never seriously listened to it and have no full albums. I need
recs for these guys, people related, and other old genres (where
Sinatra and Johnson come in). | 1 | Hank Williams
Love his old stuff. I don't want his full discography, just a good album of
songs. | 2 | Hank Williams Jr.
Not as good as his father but I've heard a few good songs. Sometimes he
seems completely sold out nowadays but surely he has a good album or
two. | 3 | Hank Williams III
The rebel, the badass, the one who hates the modern country
establishment. I love songs like Dick in Dixie and some Assjack stuff would
be cool too. | 4 | Willie Nelson
Heard a few songs that I like and I love the person himself. | 5 | Johnny Cash
I have At Folsom Prison and a few other songs already. | 6 | Frank Sinatra
Have a handful of songs but not an album anywhere. | 7 | Robert Johnson
Have a few songs from the blues legend. Perhaps the most important
musician ever. Therefore I need more of his stuff. | |

01.25.11 | Not sure if you'll like this but you could check out Uncle Tupelo. Their album No Depression is a good place to start or just torrent the anthology, it's easier to find. | ConsiderPhlebas
01.25.11 | The Willie Nelson album redsky reviewed is brilliant. The Red Headed Stranger. And Laura Cantrell is awesome if you wanted to hear some female fronted stuff. She's a contemporary artist but sings and plays in a traditional style. | eternium
01.25.11 | I remember that now. I will get that one. I'll see if I like that Uncle Tupelo guy. | eternium
01.25.11 | Oh come on guys. Why has Sputnik been so dead lately? | Grimlin
01.25.11 | look into Townes Van Zandt. he has a lot of good albums, so take your pick. | eternium
01.25.11 | What about Hank Jr.? | ASberg
01.25.11 | Kris Kristoffersson, Waylon Jennings, Steve Earle, Neil Young, David Allen Coe, Merle Haggard, Billy Joe Shaver. Pick yer poison. | Grimlin
01.25.11 | eh, the only one i really know anything about, musically, on your list is Cash. honestly didn't read the description. saw the title and acted on instinct, haha. Townes is cool though. old styled country, and i know he was a bit of a substance abuser, so in that respect he sort of fits in with the ones you have listed. | eternium
01.25.11 | Specific albums plz. I have Neil Young. | Spec
01.25.11 | I remember that now. I will get that one. I'll see if I like that Uncle Tupelo guy.
It's a band. Jeff Tweedy from Wilco was in it along with Jay Farrar. | eternium

01.25.11 | Will do. | americanmusicmachine
01.25.11 | the louvin brothers, ernest tubb, bob wills and the texas playboys, buck owens, roy acuff, porter wagoner, jimmie rogers, bill monroe, jerry jeff walker, johnny paycheck, charley pride, guy clark, joe ely, terry allen, ray wylie hubbard, the avett brothers, slim cessna's auto club, and those poor bastards.
that's a good mix of "old country", outlaw country, and more modern "rebellious hank" III stuff. for most of those guys just get their greatest hits collections. for townes van zandt i'd recomend startin' w/ his "live at the old quarter" record. for the louvin brothers get "tragic songs of life", porter wagoner get "the rubber room", for jerry jeff walker get "viva terlingua", for ray wylie hubbard get his newest, for terry allen get "lubbock (on everything)". | americanmusicmachine
01.25.11 | also get john hartford, "aero-plain" and for blues check out lightnin' hopkins.
oh yeah and check out ray charles' "modern sounds in country and western" album for a really cool take on country songs.
