01.19.11 | i think the very best tidbit of advice i can give when it comes to weightlifting is that the post-workout meal is the most important
meal of the day. after a workout your muscles are literally starving for nutrients. the best thing you can have is 40-50 grams of
protein and 60-80 grams of simple carbs like white rice or bagels. and eat it as soon after the workout as humanly possible. |
NigelH
01.19.11 | Good shit man. I had a banana and a protein shake post workout today, would you say that's enough? |
UnnamedOcean
01.19.11 | I do weight lifting. Believe me, you will start to feel so much better when you are working out. My only tips are go slow, and go for reps over weight. Usually a good full body workout for me is bench (or dumbbell bench), 21s (curls), tricep extensions, and assorted leg stuff. A trainer told me to do cardio before you lift if you want to just build muscle, and do cardio after if you want to lose weight.
Also, you can work your abs every day, so do ab workouts every night. You don't need to use a machine, just watch an abs DVD or something. |
Sp1cyMart1n1Man
01.19.11 | stick with the protein shake. those are always good. a banana is definitely not bad but it's not optimal. and just one banana isn't enough carbs. if you stick with bananas i would say have two or three instead of just one. but the thing is most fruits don't have simple enough sugars to be good post workout meals. like i said before, going with grains would be the best option. cheap, junky white bread is another good option. but the VERY best thing you can do is pick up some dextrose. it's basically just sugar taken from corn. mix it in and drink it with your protein powder. that's what i do. it's really cheap but it's kinda hard to find for some reason. and if you really wanna get the most out of your workouts have two post-workout meals; one right after the workout and then another an hour later. |
NigelH
01.19.11 | Thanks guys, some good advice for sure. I'll look for that dextrose. It sounds kinda gross, but it's beneficial because it's a simple sugar? |
Sp1cyMart1n1Man
01.19.11 | nah nigel it actually tastes pretty good. i mean hey it's sugar! and yes simple carbs are the very best thing to eat right after a
workout because basically your body absorbs them much faster than complex carbs, and a fast absorption rate is just what you
need post-
workout! but any other time complex carbs are the way to go.
and in response to Ocean's bit about cardio, in my experience doing cardio before lifting is a little bit counter productive. it's just
exhausting. it uses up calories that could be used for lifting instead. it doesn't work for me but hey maybe it works for some
people. if trying to lose weight, doing an explosive form of cardio (like sprints) first thing in the morning is the best thing to do.
it boosts your metabolism for the rest of the day and also because of the explosiveness, as opposed to endurance-based cardio
like jogging, it helps keep your body in an anabolic state so that you don't lose muscle while trying to lose fat. |

01.19.11 | hey screw u on the dextrose taste good part bro, my post workout shake involves 40g of whey protein 50g of dextrose 5g of creatine n l-glutamine, and I can tell u rite here that the dextrose makes it taste like ass. Its not the sweet sugar I've come to know throughout my life bro its ass.
To get an idea of wat im saying, just try get a cup of water, and fill it with 50g of sugar (that would be atleast 1/3 of the cup). +o( |

01.19.11 | love hitting the gym, been doing it for a while now |
BallsToTheWall
01.19.11 | Working your abs out every day is unhealthy man. Never overtrain. Two or three times a week and you're good along with doing your other bodyparts 1 to 2 times.
I personally don't use whey, either egg protein or vegan protein powder and a buffered creatine called Kre-Alkalyn 1500. Been taking that for two months and eating more and everybody tells me how much bigger I got. So I recommend that and what from i've read from my reviews and listened to my brother since he took it, the muscle and mass stays on.

01.19.11 | "I can tell u rite here that the dextrose makes it taste like ass."
damn dude sorry you dont like it. but i'm not saying i like it with just water, genius. i put it in with my protein powder and i think it tastes just fine. now maltodextrin? stay away from that cuz that shit tastes like death. |

01.19.11 | Honestly I don't think you're going to see the results that you would like with just a set of barbells. I mean I guess it's possible, but realistically I'd invest in a gym membership. |

01.19.11 | Breathe w/ your lifting and be explosive. Don't forget to breathe. |
TheJackal
01.19.11 | Don't forget to breathe is actually very good advice, amazing how easy it is to forget when you're lifting heavy weights.
I go to the gym 3 days a week, with a days recovery in between. I try to go running but I just can't be fucked most of the time. The gym is bloody addictive, though eating healthily is such a pain as a student and I really need to improve my diet lol |
FilthyBorgir
01.19.11 | I have Intermediate weight lifting class.
My advice is get your diet right (of course), set a routine plan of your work out, do cardio (that'll give defintion) like every other day, do ab work outs the same day as cardio. That's what I have to do in my class.
But most of it really comes off as technique when it comes to lifting weights. If your benching breathe after every rep especially if your doing heavier lifts. If you can't get a bench just do push-ups.
You may know this, but just a reminder. More weight, less reps = bulk, less weight, more reps = tone. |

01.20.11 | Just a question to you boys tho, if you ahve those regular 'rest days' (e.g. "a days recovery in between") how can u get enough recovery? Sometimes my bicepts hurt for like 3 days |
BallsToTheWall
01.20.11 | After awhile your biceps become accustomed to the rigors. Now I generally work out two or three straight days, take a day off and then do it again. |
FilthyBorgir
01.20.11 | You take a rest day for your muscles to recover, cuz everytime you lift muscle tissue tears. But like Balls said you'll get use to it.
That's why I also say work out different muscles one day after another, or you can tear the tissue and it makes you go to the doctors. |
sifFlammable
01.20.11 | A question balls and filthy, what is the difference between u telling me to work my biceps frequently because my biceps will become accustomed to the rigors, and sicpymatinman tellin the other guy to work their abs every day because it'll get accustomed to the rigor?
seems like the same thing: overtraining. seems. |
BallsToTheWall
01.20.11 | All you really need is one solid biceps workout per week but I like to do 2. Three to four days after the first workout. By then your muscles will have been repaired. If you work out your abs every day, your muscles will not grow. |

01.20.11 | k yea i get it, just clarifying some confusion.
