Musings On The Music Industry

Now, I'm pretty underinformed when it comes to the happenings of rthe Music Industry, but rrthese are just a few things I wonder about.

How come they're still stubbornly refusing to lower the prices on music, both in digital and physical form? Do
they really think a Rush album that's been sitting on the Best Buy shelves for ages is still going to sell for
$12 at some point? Is the mainstream music industry just that fucking hard-headed?

What's the future of the music industry going to be like? I've had some exposure to bandcamp and other
methods of music distribution that are a bit more equitable between artist and fan, but what else is out there?

How are local venues doing? I've seen a couple close down, and it really bums me out. Honestly, I wouldn't
mind paying a bit more for shows to keep the places and artists afloat. $10-$20 for at least 2 bands that
you actually enjoy, and like 4 other groups just trying to get their name out there makes me wonder how
they manage. The few shows I played in the past were pretty much for free, because we weren't popular
enough to draw a respectable crowd. We earned a tiny bit of money, but pretty much put that right back
into pressing some shirts.

This Will Be the Death of Us

Since Electronica is now really really becoming mainstream (much more so than in the past few years, at least
in my area), how do music rights work for remixes and such? One of my friends is an aspiring DJ, and I'm
curious as to how the rights for the music he mixes works, since he works from sampling existing songs. Is he
liable to be sued for copyright infringement? Do most of the artists even give a fuck?

Why is the mainstream music industry seemingly so harshly at odds with the indie music world unless theres
money to be made in supporting a token indie band? Am I just imagining a conflict, or are rich artists and
their affiliates generally very very douchey to the struggling artists most of them were at one point?
