Josh D. 01.14.11	I don't understand what you mean about the prices of digital music. iTunes has always been cheaper, and there have ben subscription type sites like Rhapsody or whatever, and now with things like Bandcamp, you can buy albums for $5 (I got one today because I couldn't find it on mediafire). Digital music seems cheap to me.
omnipanzer 01.14.11	ok here is a clear cut explanation on 4 for you. Someone else's music can be used in an form desired due to the "fair use" act but you CANNOT directly profit from that work. So you can create anything you want to and throw it up on the web for free download as a means to promote yourself but the moment you sell it you are open for libel suits. Once you have a name for yourself You make most of your money from shows and merchandise anyway. That is not all encompassing but it's pretty close and pretty accurate I believe.

There live shows are killer but every song they have starts with a song they sample so even though all of there lyrics are original they sill have to put there albums up for free download in order to not be held libel but still get promoted. I suggest "Pepperoni Lovers" ;^)

omnipanzer 01.14.11	OK: common mis conceptions include "Noncommercial use is invariably fair. Not true, though a judge may take the profit motive or lack thereof into account." Fair use is separate from copyright and has to do with hindering that artist or publishers ability to maintain a profit from said works (among other things).

acADHDemy 01.14.11	in america: "Fair Use" is a doctrine - there's no "Fair Use Act" per se, its a defense against alleged copyright infringement... i.e., commercial use is permissible as long as it's "fair use"
DanteCuomo 01.14.11	The real problem is the vast amount of free, readily available music. Back in the day you would have 5-10 CDs that you listened the SHIT out of, but now, you're getting some new band or discog every other day and not paying a dime for it. Musical hunger has turned into gluttony, and sadly many of us are sitting at some crappy Chinese buffet chowing down some "chicken". I love free music as much as the next guy, but I do sincerely miss the joy of finding and purchasing a new CD and not being able to wait to throw it on in my car or room. A couple clicks to unzip a .rar I just downloaded isn't the same; especially when I have another six waiting for the same treatment on the taskbar. Very few of the "classics" I have found and acquired through this site have anywhere close to the amount of emotional attachment that I have with albums like Satellite and Define the Great Line; two albums that I bought on a whim and that are instrumental to how my taste in music has evolved. I guess the bottom line here is that we're all on a sinking ship, and we're all poking holes in an effort to save it. Sorry for the tl;dr (and no doubt rambling), but it was a thought that just occurred to me and I wanted to get it written down while I had the chance.
couldwinarabbit 01.14.11	We studied the music class quite heavily in business class and I did a group case on it. The record companies are bombing and have absolutely no new ideas. Napster did this intitally but the fact that In Rainbows was able to sell at a high price than it would at wal-mart makes the entire industries future look dismal at best. Now it can be argued that only a band as popular as Radiohead would be able to release music in such a way but that has yet to be seen. That sampling stuff is horribly complicated though. I think that not many artists would complain about being on the new avalanches album...but to be sampled on the new Ke$ha album would be a completely different story. So it looks as if band in electronic music, but most especially plunderphonics, are only going to be able to get 1 album out a decade. Which is bullshit.
