2010 Digs

Last digs list of the year. Will post best of 2010 in a couple of days, when I have time to refine the list.
1U.S. Christmas
Run Thick in the Night

4.0 - Psychedelic Rock/Space Rock from USA. This genre seems to be brimming with a wealth of terrific releases. Having great bands emerging from Germany and Japan, and these guys, American Psychedelic rockers, bringing masterfully crafted songs on their third studio album. Well-executed, Colour Haze-influenced music with gorgeous folk numbers in between. A real highlight of the year.
2Samsara Blues Experiment
Long Distance Trip

4.0 - Psychedelic Rock/Stoner Rock from Germany. Album cover perfectly illustrates what this album is about. Get blazed, fuck some bitches, and lay around naked...also has brilliant instrumental passages a la U.S Christmas.
3Deathspell Omega
Paracletus

3.5 - Black Metal form France. Pretty much a 'fuck-you' to every other BM band that keep churning out uninspired releases. An original, heavy effort from a band that rarely strays from releasing top quality BM.
4The Secret
Solve et Coagula

3.5 - Hardcore Punk/Black Metal from Italy. Angriest album of the year. It's like Converge decided to slaughter some goats and this was Satan's reward...
5Drapsnatt
Hymner till undergangen

3.5 - Atmospheric Black Metal from Sweden. Take Fen, Burzum and Windir, and some more acoustic sections, and you have Hymner...
6Woe
Quietly, Undramatically

3.5 - Black Metal from USA. So it's been hyped a bit around here. And so it should, awesome release.
7Axeman
Arrive

3.5 - Black Metal from USA. How I wish I listened to this earlier in the year. Raw BM project which slays so much.
8Electric Wizard
Black Masses

3.5 - Stoner Metal/Heavy Psych from UK. Listened to this so much. Some really good riffs across an album which never fails to entertain. For fans of stoner/doom that like their metal covered in a thick layer of psychedelic muck.
9Killing Joke
Absolute Dissent

3.0 - Post-punk from UK. "ABSOLUTE DISSENT!!!!!!" So much energy in this tight album. Good to see these guy still going at it after thirty years.
10Locrian
The Crystal World

3.0 - Drone from USA. These guys brought out a great album earlier in the year, and they follow it up with The Crystal World. Sadly, this album will be largely unnoticed this year, and it sucks cos it's probably among the best drone releases of the year. Some songs are so powerful yet subtle, bringing out a sound that shifts into genres of Drone Doom, and Post-rock. Really solid.
11The Third Eye Foundation
The Dark

3.0 - Electronic/Drum and Bass/Breakbeat from UK. At times it can be pulsing Electronic beats with polite drum and bass backdrops, and light classical sections. All up, really good album, def worth checking out.
12Nautic Depths
Siberian Winter

3.0 - Dark Ambient/Drone from Germany. Very soft Dark ambient, with enough happening to stop you falling asleep, yet still relaxing.
13Menace Ruine
Union of Irreconcilables

3.0 - Dark Ambient/Drone/Doom/Black Metal/Noise from Canada. Fuck knows what the genre is, doesnt matter, it sounds evil, and ultimately rules.
14John Zorn
The Goddess: Music for the Ancient of Days

3.0 - Chamber Jazz from USA. Don't let the romance-novel album art fool you, this album is nothing short of great.
15Nihil Novi Sub Sole
Jupiter Temple

3.0 - Martial Industrial from Netherlands. War music never fails to interest me. This time round, its more darkwave-influenced military anthems.
16Kanye West
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

3.0 - Pop/Hip Hop from USA. Let's have a toast to Kanye West: a douchebag and an asshole. But we have to give him credit where he deserves it. Here is a collection of inspiring pop tunes, recommended.
17Zhang Yi
The Heavenly Tibet

3.0 - New Age/World Music from Tibet. No one will look into this, but oh well. Is quality New Age.
18Bardo Pond
Bardo Pond

3.0 - Psychedelic Rock/Noise Rock from USA. Been a fan of these guys for while. Their eponymous 2010 release continues to carry on their successful take on Psych Rock, with good results. Only one to have rated this one so far, so give it a listen.
19Inquisition
Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical...

3.0 - Black Metal form USA. Surprised i'm first to have rated this. Metalheads would love this.
20Portugal. The Man
American Ghetto

3.0 - Indie Rock from USA. Liked this alot at first, but after a few listens decided the 2009 release was better. Still solid.
