Masochist 12.29.10	That's true of pretty much all electronic devices with harddrive storage--you don't get the exact amount they advertise. It's understood that part of that space is going to be used for the software of the thing using the harddrive. Hell, even external harddrives have slightly less than the space that they advertise they have. That being said...it's a lot less noticeable when you lose 1.5 GB of space out of a terrabyte harddrive than it is when you lose 1.5 gigs from an 8 gig iPod. Shit seriously sucks, sir...sorry.

When you buy a computer with 100GB hard drive space, it's never that high because you have to take into account the space required to run the operating system and software etc. Same goes with memory and pretty much everything else. It's always been that way so I dunno why you were so surprised it's that way with the ipod.
omnipanzer 12.29.10	To be more accurate: Size listed by manufacturer is always calculated with 'base 10' 1 Gigabyte = 1,000,000,000,000 Bytes it fits the metric system (and it looks better). OS's uses the "base 2" calculation which says 1 gigabyte = 1024 megabytes. (remember OS and windows are originated in America). So you loose space right off the bat when comparing the manufacturers label (back of the ipod) to what the OS is going to tell you. Then you add the space needed by apps and the OS and you end up with your 6.3. This is all considered typical and accepted as the norm. You should take it back and get the 32gb if you can as the 8gb was never meant for true music addicts. It was made for my wife that like the morning zoo and wants to hear the new singles that came out this month.

Approx 25$ for a new face, ear jack and battery = good as new. Or if actually damaged replace it. it's not that expensive and the only thing I wouldn't try on my first attempt is the back plate as it has tracks mounted inside that are a pain in the butt to remove and then place on the new back piece (goes for iphones as well). YouTube is your best friend in this case...

But yeah, I'll definitely consider getting a classic at some point, supposedly I'm "stuck" with a Touch atm.
